Book excerpt: Tapestry triumphed as the most prized and celebrated artistic medium in Europe during the Early Modern era (1400-1750) – an age we normally associate with great sculptures and paintings. This is evidenced by tapestry collections included in inventories that outnumber other media by a significant margin. Despite tapestry’s prestige in this period, the innovative character and historical importance of this medium has gone largely unrecognized by modern scholars compared to other art forms, especially painting. My dissertation aims to redress this failure by analyzing shifts in tapestry design, initiated by Raphael’s tapestry designs made for the Sistine Chapel in the sixteenth century, which ultimately transformed the way in which tapestry was designed and experienced in subsequent centuries. The woven medium’s elevated status stems, in part, from the expense and material splendor of wool, silk, and gilt-metal threads, but I argue that it is also because tapestry was conceptualized as a metatextile, or a self-aware medium during this period. This means that tapestry manipulated innovations and characteristics from other media to better showcase the full range of its own artistic capacities. In other words, woven ensembles imitated other media like fresco and easel painting, sculpture, and architecture to great visual effect, but did so according to and by means of tapestry’s distinctive materiality, or its characteristics of thread, scale, and mobility. I consider the unexamined role that borders, a distinctive framing feature of tapestry design, played in tapestry’s articulation of other artistic media’s illusionistic forms. I argue that these framing devices, combined with the medium’s immense size, mobility, and material richness, are key to tapestry’s self-awareness in relation to other art forms in the period. By tracing this metatextile trajectory, my dissertation brings to life for contemporary viewers (who encounter only a fraction of tapestry’s original splendor when viewing these objects in the controlled environments of a museum) the manner in which Early Modern textile spaces were commissioned, designed, and experienced. In doing so, my dissertation reasserts tapestry’s novelty and prominence among the visual arts, and explains the attraction and challenge that this particular medium presented for the period’s leading designers.

The Christian liturgy is intimately bound with veiling objects and revealing them. Cloths hide the altar, making it all the more spectacular when it is revealed. Fragments of imported silk cradle the relic, thereby giving identity to the dessicated bone. Much of that silk came from the east, meaning that a material of Islamic origin was a primary signifier of sanctity in Christianity. Weaving, Veiling, and Dressing brings together twelve essays about text and textile, about silk and wool, about the formation of identity through fibre. The essays bring to light hitherto unseen material, and for the first time, establish the function of textiles as a culturally rich way to approach the Middle Ages. Textiles were omnipresent in the medieval church, but have not survived well. To uncover their uses, presence, and meanings in the Middle Ages is to reconsider the period spun, draped, clothed, shrouded, and dressed. Textiles in particular were essential to the performance of devotion and of the liturgy. Brightly dyed cloth was a highly visible maker of meaning. While some aspects of culture have been studied, namely the important tapestry industry, as well as some of the repercussions and activities of cloth guilds, other areas of textile studies in the period are yet to be studied. This book brings an interdisciplinary approach to new material, drawing on art history, anthropology, medieval text history, theology, and gender and performance studies. It makes a compelling miscellany exploring the nature of Christianity in the largely uninvestigated field of text and textile interplay.

Book excerpt: Against a historical backdrop of relic theft and propaganda campaigns waged by two cities vying for patriarchal authority in medieval Venetia, Thomas Dale shows how Romanesque mural painting shaped sacred space and institutional identity. His focus is on the late twelfth-century murals in the crypt of Aquileia Cathedral. The crypt, which contains the relics of Aquileia's founding bishop, Saint Hermagoras, has a historical significance rooted in a legend identifying the saint as a direct disciple of Saint Mark the Evangelist. On this basis, the Carolingians promoted the city's status as patriarchal see of Venetia--a claim that prompted Venice to steal Mark's relics from Alexandria, Egypt, and appropriate Aquileia's history. This book, the first English-language study of the crypt, explores how the paintings complement the relics of Hermagoras in their distinct devotional and political roles. Hermagoras's intercessory power is activated by his orant image displayed over the central aisle within a larger hierarchy of apostles, martyrs, and bishops. The surrounding hagiographic cycle justifies in legalistic fashion Aquileia's patriarchal title and the consecration of the city as locus sanctus of Venetia by the blood of its martyrs. The iconic images in the eastern lunettes present the Virgin's compassio as a pictorial model for the vicarious experience of Christ's Passion. Finally, a fictive curtain over the socle presents allegories of spiritual warfare in the form of exempla from crusades, pilgrimage, and the epic poem Psychomachia, which Dale analyzes as a gloss on the main program.
