Book excerpt: The use of medium as a technique, material, and metaphor within contemporary art, architecture, and criticism is addressed in this study that illustrates the relevance of textiles. It reveals how the rise of textiles as a prominent art form since the 1990s has not been subjected to comprehensive historical and theoretical reflection thus far. Attempting to map out some of the several meanings and functions of textiles in contemporary art so as to articulate a “metatextile” theory or a “textile discourse,” the book discusses central aspects of the contemporary medium from identity, myth, and clothing to technology, architecture, ornament, anthropology, phenomenology, and historiography. This edition is written in English, French, and German.

Book Textile in Architecture

Download or read book Textile in Architecture written by Didem Ekici and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the interconnections between textile and architecture via a variety of case studies from the Middle Ages through the twentieth century and from diverse geographic contexts. Among the oldest human technologies, building and weaving have intertwined histories. Textile structures go back to Palaeolithic times and are still in use today and textile furnishings have long been used in interiors. Beyond its use as a material, textile has offered a captivating model and metaphor for architecture through its ability to enclose, tie together, weave, communicate, and adorn. Recently, architects have shown a renewed interest in the textile medium due to the use of computer-aided design, digital fabrication, and innovative materials and engineering. The essays edited and compiled here, work across disciplines to provide new insights into the enduring relationship between textiles and architecture. The contributors critically explore the spatial and material qualities of textiles as well as cultural and political significance of textile artifacts, patterns, and metaphors in architecture. Textile in Architecture is organized into three sections: “Ritual Spaces,” which examines the role of textiles in the formation and performance of socio-political, religious, and civic rituals; “Public and Private Interiors” explores how textiles transformed interiors corresponding to changing aesthetics, cultural values, and material practices; and “Materiality and Material Translations,” which considers textile as metaphor and model in the materiality of built environment. Including cases from Morocco, Samoa, France, India, the UK, Spain, the Ancient Andes and the Ottoman Empire, this is essential reading for any student or researcher interested in textiles in architecture through the ages.

How was outer space conceived and communicated? What promises of interplanetary expansion and cosmic colonization propelled the project of human spaceflight to the forefront of twentieth-century modernity? In what way has West-European astroculture been affected by the continuous exploration of outer space? Tracing the thriving interest in spatiality to early attempts at exploring imaginary worlds beyond our own, the book analyzes contact points between science and fiction from a transdisciplinary perspective and examines sites and situations where utopian images and futuristic technologies contributed to the omnipresence of fantasmatic thought. Bringing together state-of-the-art work in this emerging field of historical research, the volume breaks new ground in the historicization of the Space Age.

Book Metatextiles and the Triumph of Tapestry

Download or read book Metatextiles and the Triumph of Tapestry written by Kristen Irvine Adams and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tapestry triumphed as the most prized and celebrated artistic medium in Europe during the Early Modern era (1400-1750) – an age we normally associate with great sculptures and paintings. This is evidenced by tapestry collections included in inventories that outnumber other media by a significant margin. Despite tapestry’s prestige in this period, the innovative character and historical importance of this medium has gone largely unrecognized by modern scholars compared to other art forms, especially painting. My dissertation aims to redress this failure by analyzing shifts in tapestry design, initiated by Raphael’s tapestry designs made for the Sistine Chapel in the sixteenth century, which ultimately transformed the way in which tapestry was designed and experienced in subsequent centuries. The woven medium’s elevated status stems, in part, from the expense and material splendor of wool, silk, and gilt-metal threads, but I argue that it is also because tapestry was conceptualized as a metatextile, or a self-aware medium during this period. This means that tapestry manipulated innovations and characteristics from other media to better showcase the full range of its own artistic capacities. In other words, woven ensembles imitated other media like fresco and easel painting, sculpture, and architecture to great visual effect, but did so according to and by means of tapestry’s distinctive materiality, or its characteristics of thread, scale, and mobility. I consider the unexamined role that borders, a distinctive framing feature of tapestry design, played in tapestry’s articulation of other artistic media’s illusionistic forms. I argue that these framing devices, combined with the medium’s immense size, mobility, and material richness, are key to tapestry’s self-awareness in relation to other art forms in the period. By tracing this metatextile trajectory, my dissertation brings to life for contemporary viewers (who encounter only a fraction of tapestry’s original splendor when viewing these objects in the controlled environments of a museum) the manner in which Early Modern textile spaces were commissioned, designed, and experienced. In doing so, my dissertation reasserts tapestry’s novelty and prominence among the visual arts, and explains the attraction and challenge that this particular medium presented for the period’s leading designers.

Book Material Cultures of Psychiatry

Download or read book Material Cultures of Psychiatry written by Monika Ankele and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2020-10-31 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past, our ideas of psychiatric hospitals and their history have been shaped by objects like straitjackets, cribs, and binding belts. These powerful objects were often used as a synonym for psychiatry and the way psychiatric patients were treated, yet very little is known about the agency of these objects and their appropriation by staff and patients. By focusing on material cultures, this book offers a new perspective on the history of psychiatry: it enables a narrative in which practicing psychiatry is part of a complex entanglement in which power is constantly negotiated. Scholars from different academic disciplines show how this material-based approach opens up new perspectives on the agency and imagination of men and women inside psychiatry.

Book Display of Art in the Roman Palace 1550 1750

Download or read book Display of Art in the Roman Palace 1550 1750 written by Gail Feigenbaum and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the principles of the display of art in the magnificent Roman palaces of the early modern period, focusing attention on how the parts function to convey multiple artistic, social, and political messages, all within a splendid environment that provided a model for aristocratic residences throughout Europe. Many of the objects exhibited in museums today once graced the interior of a Roman Baroque palazzo or a setting inspired by one. In fact, the very convention of a paintings gallery— the mainstay of museums—traces its ancestry to prototypes in the palaces of Rome. Inside Roman palaces, the display of art was calibrated to an increasingly accentuated dynamism of social and official life, activated by the moving bodies and the attention of residents and visitors. Display unfolded in space in a purposeful narrative that reflected rank, honor, privilege, and intimacy. With a contextual approach that encompasses the full range of media, from textiles to stucco, this study traces the influential emerging concept of a unified interior. It argues that art history—even the emergence of the modern category of fine art—was worked out as much in the rooms of palaces as in the printed pages of Vasari and other early writers on art.
