Book excerpt: The metaphors in Hosea are rich and varied, comprising both gendered and non-gendered image fields. This book examines the use of metaphor in Hosea through the lens of masculinity studies, which provides a means to elucidate connections between the images and to analyze their cumulative rhetorical effect. The rhetoric of both the gendered and non-gendered imagery is analyzed using a model from cognitive anthropology, which divides social space along three axes: activity, potency, and goodness. People use metaphors to position and to move one another within this space. These axes reveal how the metaphors in Hosea rhetorically relate the audience, represented by Ephraim/Israel, and YHWH to a particular construction of masculinity. Hosea uses the imagery of Assyrian treaty curses to reinforce YHWH's masculinity and dominance, while undermining the masculinity of the audience. The rhetoric of the text attempts to bring the audience into an appropriately subordinate position with respect to YHWH and to shape its members' actions and attitudes accordingly.

Book Sexual and Marital Metaphors in Hosea Jeremiah Isaiah and Ezekiel

Download or read book Sexual and Marital Metaphors in Hosea Jeremiah Isaiah and Ezekiel written by Sharon Moughtin-Mumby and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-06-05 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharon Moughtin-Mumby considers the often unrecognised impact of different approaches to metaphor on readings of the prophtic sexual and marital metaphorical language. She outlines a practical and consciously simplified approach to metaphor, placing strong emphasis on the influence of literary context on metaphorical meaning. Drawing on this approach, she read Hosea 4-14, Jeremiah 2:1-4:4, Isaiah, Ezekiel 16 and 23, and Hosea 1-3 with fresh eyes. Her lucid new readings reveal the way in which scholarship has repeatedly stifled the prophetic metaphorical language by reading it within the 'default contexts' of 'the marriage metaphor' and 'cultic prostitution', which for so many years have been simply assumed. Readers are encouraged instead to read these diverse metaphors and similes within their distinctive literary contexts in which they have the potential to rise vividly to life, provoking the question: how are we to respond to these disquieting, powerful texts in the midst of the Hebrew Bible?

Book Imagery in the Prophecy of Hosea

Download or read book Imagery in the Prophecy of Hosea written by Emmanuel O. Nwaoru and published by Otto Harrassowitz. This book was released on 1999 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the images in the book of Hosea has always been dominated by a single semantic field - family life. Nwaoru adopts a more comprehensive approach which points to the conclusion that all Hosea's images (metaphors and similes) are essentially functional literary devices and, therefore, indispensable for the overall understanding of Hosea's message. More than other aspects of Hosea's language and style his images succinctly define Jahweh's mood and Israel's behaviour. They set the dynamism of the oracles and the complications along which the prophetic message develops. This study also challenges the view that Hosea uncritically draws his images from other traditions. Close observation shows that Hosea not only creates most of his images but also introduces them into biblical tradition.

Book Hosea s God

  • Author : Mason D. Lancaster

Download or read book Hosea s God written by Mason D. Lancaster and published by SBL Press. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Hosea is a labyrinth of juxtaposed images for God and God’s people, with such disparate metaphors as God the devouring lion and God the reviving dew. In Hosea’s God: A Metaphorical Theology, Mason D. Lancaster demonstrates that recent advances in metaphor theory help untangle these divergent portrayals of God. He analyzes fifteen metaphor clusters in Hosea 4–14 individually, then discerns patterns and reversals between the clusters. Finally, respecting the ancient value for emphasizing individual aspects of a depiction over a homogenized picture of the whole, the book identifies five characteristics of God prominent among the metaphors of Hosea. Based on this analysis, Lancaster asserts that Hosea’s metaphorical depiction of Yahweh ultimately derives from the primacy of Yahweh’s fidelity to Israel.

Book Responsibility Chastisement and Restoration

Download or read book Responsibility Chastisement and Restoration written by Ronald Laldinsuah and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Old Testament scholars have focused their studies of justice on the eighth-century BC prophets Isaiah, Amos and Micah, giving little or no attention to Hosea. Neglect of Hosea in relation to justice arises from the common notion that he was a prophet of love, and although some studies concede that parts of the book deal with justice, it is often overlooked or given secondary importance to other concerns and themes. In this publication Ronald Laldinsuah addresses this misconception by demonstrating that Hosea was indeed a prophet of justice. Through careful analysis of the text as well as observing both the biblical concept and the secular notions of justice it is observed that justice must perpetuate right and true relationships. In ‘relational justice’ we see the inseparable relationship among humans, and between humans and God – emphasising Hosea’s message of responsibility, chastisement and restoration.

Book Hosea A Textual Commentary

Download or read book Hosea A Textual Commentary written by Mayer I. Gruber and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mayer I. Gruber provides a new commentary on and translation of Hosea. Building upon his work that debunked the myth of sacred prostitution, Gruber now goes on to show that the book of Hosea repeatedly advocates a single standard of marital fidelity for men and women and teaches cheated women to fight back. Gruber employs the latest and most precise findings of lexicography and poetics to solve the difficulties of the text and to determine both how Hosea can be read and what this means. The translation differs from classical and recent renderings in eliminating forms and expressions, which are neither modern English nor ancient Hebrew. Referring to places, events, and material reality of the 9th and 8th centuries BCE, Gruber uncovers the abiding messages of the heretofore obscure book of Hosea. As in previous studies, Gruber employs the insights of behavioral sciences to uncover forgotten meanings of numerous allusions, idioms, similes, and metaphors. Judicious use is made also of textual history, reception history, and personal voice criticism. One of the least biblical books now speaks more clearly to present and future audiences than it did to many previous audiences.

Book Woman s Body and the Social Body in Hosea 1 2

Download or read book Woman s Body and the Social Body in Hosea 1 2 written by Alice A. Keefe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2002-02-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keefe's analysis dismantles the androcentric and theological assumptions which have determined the dominant reading of Hosea's metaphor of Israel as the adulterous wife of God. It shows how the projection of symbolic associations of women with nature, sexual temptation and sin have anachronistically determined this metaphor as referring to Israel's apostasy in a lurid 'fertility cult'. Against this reading, Keefe's study considers Hosea 1-2 in the context of the association of sexual transgression and social violence in biblical literature; in this light, Hosea's symbol of Israel as an adulterous woman is read as a commentary upon the structural violence in Israelite society which accompanied the eighth century boom in 'agribusiness' and attendant processes of land consolidation.

Book Metaphors and Similes for Yahweh in Hosea 14 2 9 1 8

Download or read book Metaphors and Similes for Yahweh in Hosea 14 2 9 1 8 written by Bernhard Oestreich and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared with the effort to interpret Hosea 1-3, the final chapter has been rather neglected. Additionally, the variety of explanations of biblical images in Hos 14 indicates a necessity to clarify the methods of their interpretation. The metaphors and similes of Hos 14:2-9 referring to Yahweh, healing, loving dew, and tree, are investigated. They are interpreted on the background of their language conventions. Thereby the actual usage in Hosea with its twists, alterations, and reversals becomes obvious. The study demonstrates that Hosea's metaphors and similes are deeply rooted in Israelite language traditions. They are not to be interpreted as literal description of cultic experiences. All the metaphors for Yahweh in Hos 14 are traditionally connected with kingship. They are used in such a way that they express an eschatological hope with Yahweh as Israel's king, however, without downgrading Yahweh's radical judgment.

Download or read book Hosea written by Francis Landy and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1995-10-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reading of Hosea explores the book from a feminist, psychoanalytical and poetic perspective. What is God doing with a prostitute? How does the theme of prostitution relate to the abjection of the woman as the other, and the fantasy of sexual ecstasy, precisely because she escapes patriarchal order? Where is the prophet situated in the dialectic of rage and desire that both seduces and condemns Israel? His voice is both masculine and feminine, and poetically embodies the sensuality of wayward Israel. The ambiguity of voice is also that of the prophet's role, which is both to nurture Israel, as on its Exodus from Egypt, and to be the trap that destroys it. The problematic of voice and prophetic function is evident in the vivid dissection of Israel's social institutions, whose disintegration is inversely related to the centrality of the discussion in the structure of the book, and in the violent swings from despair to impossible hope. The focus on immediate and uncontrollable entropy, manifest in extended tangled metaphors, that occupies the centre of the book, is framed in the outer chapters by intertextual references to Israel's primordial vision, and the romantic distantiation of the Song of Songs, in which the erotic and poetic contradictions of the book find their perhaps ironic resolution.

Book The Metaphor of Illness and Healing in Hosea and Its Significance in the Socio economic Context of Eighth century Israel and Judah

Download or read book The Metaphor of Illness and Healing in Hosea and Its Significance in the Socio economic Context of Eighth century Israel and Judah written by Seong-Hyuk Hong and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the central metaphors in the Book of Hosea is the metaphor of illness and healing, which is explicitly or implicitly mentioned with frequency throughout the text. This book focuses on the social connotations of the metaphor of illness and healing in Hosea 5:8-6:3 and 7:1-7. It incorporates a theoretical analysis of metaphor into a sociological discussion about the social reality of eighth-century Israel and Judah as well as a comparative study of the concept of illness and healing in the ancient Near East and traditional East Asia (Korea). This book breaks new ground by exploring the crucial significance of the metaphor in the socio-economic context of eighth-century Israel and Judah.
