Book Metamaterial inspired Structures for Microwave and Terahertz Applications

Download or read book Metamaterial inspired Structures for Microwave and Terahertz Applications written by Amir Ebrahimi and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electromagnetic metamaterials are engineered materials that exhibit controllable electromagnetic properties within a desired frequency range. They are usually made of periodic metallic resonant inclusions with dimensions much smaller than the operational wavelength. Since their introduction, they have found many applications from the microwave frequency range up to the terahertz and optical ranges. One key advantage of metamaterial lies in their sub-wavelength resonators making them suitable for miniaturisation of RF circuits and components. This thesis investigates applications of metamaterial-inspired resonators and structures to design improved devices and components operating at either the microwave or terahertz frequency range. The first part of the dissertation is on the design of miniaturised microwave filters for integrated portable RF systems. Dual-mode metamaterial resonators are proposed as alternatives to conventional resonators for size reduction of the RF filters. In the second part, the focus is on the design of compact metamaterial sensors with improved functionalities. Complementary metamaterial resonators are proposed for designing microfluidic sensors with improved sensitivity and linearity. The designed microfluidic sensors have been tested and verified for dielectric characterisation of chemical and biological solutions. A wide dynamic-range displacement sensor has been designed based on a microstrip-line-coupled complementary electric- LC (ELC) resonator. Furthermore, a rotation sensor is designed with coupled U-shaped resonator with a dynamic range of 180°, where the sensor linearity is improved by asymmetrically tapering the resonators shape. The third part focuses on the design of microwave and terahertz frequency selective surfaces (FSS) based on metamaterial miniaturised elements. Tunable and dual-band FSSs are proposed for reconfigurable and multi-standard microwave communications. Eventually, miniaturised-elements are used to design second-order FSSs at the terahertz frequency range. The simulation and measurement results confirm a harmonic-free and stable frequency response of the designed FSSs under oblique incidence angles. Overall, the research outcomes in this thesis suggest the efficiency of metamaterial resonators for the design of sensing and communications devices with improved performance over a wide frequency range from the microwave up to terahertz.

Book Metamaterial inspired structures and their applications in microwave millimeter wave and terahertz planar circuits

Download or read book Metamaterial inspired structures and their applications in microwave millimeter wave and terahertz planar circuits written by Ali Karami Horestani and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metamaterials are generally defined as periodic composite structures that are engineered to modify the electromagnetic properties of materials, especially in order to achieve new physically realizable responses that may not be readily available in nature. The key to the application of metamaterial resonators for the synthesis of such effective media is their small electrical size. This feature can be also exploited for the miniaturization of planar circuits. Motivated by the need for miniaturized planar structures in mobile wireless systems, metamaterial-inspired structures are proposed throughout this thesis for the design of compact microwave, millimeter-wave and terahertz planar structures with improved performance. The thesis firstly proposes slow-wave and SRR-loaded coplanar strips resonators for the design of compact high quality factor balanced resonators for 60GHz VCOs in CMOS technology. Next, the thesis is focused on the miniaturization of microwave filters either by proposing resonators with dual-band functionality or through modifying the shape of metamaterial resonators. Shape modifications of metamaterial resonators are also used for the design of high-dynamic-range one- and two-dimensional displacement sensors as well as of a rotation sensor with improved dynamic range. It is further shown that high level of miniaturization can be achieved in a single-layer S-shaped SRR (S-SRR), if the loops of the S-SRR are excited by contra-directional magnetic fluxes, which makes the S-SRR very well suited for application in coplanar waveguide (CPW) technology. The thesis also proposes the dual counterpart of the S-shaped SRR, i.e., S-shaped complementary split ring resonator (S-CSRR) for application in the design of compact differential bandpass filters with inherent common-mode suppression. Finally, the application of SRRs to the design of compact bandpass filters for terahertz surface waves on single wire waveguides - the so-called planar Goubau lines (PGLs) - is studied numerically and experimentally. The results of this research show the versatility and potential of metamaterial-inspired resonators for the realization of miniaturized structures in planar technologies in different frequency bands.

Book Metamaterials and Metasurfaces

Download or read book Metamaterials and Metasurfaces written by Josep Canet-Ferrer and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metamaterials have provided applications in spectral ranges covering radio frequencies and ultraviolet. However, most applications have been extrapolated to the visible or near-infrared after being developed at the GHz level. This is due to technological reasons since fabrication of microwave antennas is not as demanding as THz resonators or plasmonic nanostructures. Accordingly, this book has been divided into three parts. In the first part, fundamentals of metamaterials and metadevices are discussed, while describing recent advances in the field. In the second part, the discussion is extended to the different spectral ranges focusing on the strategies for enabling the reconfigurability of metadevices. Given the increasing interest in THz applications, these can be found in the third part.

Book Planar Metamaterial Based Microwave Sensor Arrays for Biomedical Analysis and Treatment

Download or read book Planar Metamaterial Based Microwave Sensor Arrays for Biomedical Analysis and Treatment written by Margarita Puentes Vargas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-03-29 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an innovative concept for the realization of sensors based on a planar metamaterial microwave array and shows their application in biomedical analysis and treatment. The sensors are able to transduce the dielectric properties of materials in their direct vicinity into an electric signal. The specific array organization permits a simultaneous analysis of several materials using a single readout signal or a relative characterization of one material where information about its spatial distribution can be extracted. Two applications of the designed sensors are described here: the first is a cytological screening using micro fluidic technology, which shows that the sensors may be integrated into lab-on-chip technologies; the second application regards the use of the sensor in both the analysis and treatment of organic tissues. The developed sensor is able not only to screen the tissues for abnormalities, but also, by changing the applied signals, to perform thermal ablation and treat the abnormalities in a highly focused way. Thus, the research described in this book represents a considerable advancement in the field of biomedical microwave sensing.
