Book The Texture of Industry

Download or read book The Texture of Industry written by Robert B. Gordon and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-02-06 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While historians have given ample attention to stories of entrepreneurship, invention, and labor conflict, they have told us little about actual work-places and how people worked. Workers seldom wrote about their daily employment. However, they did leave behind their tools, products, shops, and factories as well as the surrounding industrial landscapes and communities. In this book, Gordon and Malone look at the industrialization of North America from the perspective of the industrial archaeologist. Using material evidence from such varied sites as Indian steatite quarries, automobile plants, and coal mines, they examine manufacturing technology, transportation systems, and the effects of industrialization on the land. Their research greatly expands our understanding of industry and focuses attention on the contributions of anonymous artisans whose skills shaped our industrial heritage.

Book Integrated Product Design and Manufacturing Using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing

Download or read book Integrated Product Design and Manufacturing Using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing written by Bob Campbell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-09-13 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the preparation and application of design layout analyses with concurrent engineering teams in six steps that capture design intent and add value to design process. It offers tools for eliminating costly trial-and-error approaches and deliver economically viable products. The authors discuss product design techniques that alleviate the constraints between product definition, manufacturing, and inspection, the prediction of variation effects on product function and manufacturing efficiency, functional inspection techniques that include CMM measurement, optical comparators, and surface plate and functional gaging, and more.

Book Sheet Metal Forming Processes

Download or read book Sheet Metal Forming Processes written by Dorel Banabic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-21 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of virtual manufacturing has been developed in order to increase the industrial performances, being one of the most ef cient ways of reducing the m- ufacturing times and improving the quality of the products. Numerical simulation of metal forming processes, as a component of the virtual manufacturing process, has a very important contribution to the reduction of the lead time. The nite element method is currently the most widely used numerical procedure for s- ulating sheet metal forming processes. The accuracy of the simulation programs used in industry is in uenced by the constitutive models and the forming limit curves models incorporated in their structure. From the above discussion, we can distinguish a very strong connection between virtual manufacturing as a general concept, ?nite element method as a numerical analysis instrument and constitutive laws, aswellas forming limit curves as a speci city of the sheet metal forming processes. Consequently, the material modeling is strategic when models of reality have to be built. The book gives a synthetic presentation of the research performed in the eld of sheet metal forming simulation during more than 20 years by the members of three international teams: the Research Centre on Sheet Metal Forming—CERTETA (Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania); AutoForm Company from Zürich, Switzerland and VOLVO automotive company from Sweden. The rst chapter presents an overview of different Finite Element (FE) formu- tions used for sheet metal forming simulation, now and in the past.

Book Cycles Growth and the Great Recession

Download or read book Cycles Growth and the Great Recession written by Annalisa Cristini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cycles, Growth and the Great Recession is a collection of papers that assess the nature and role of the business cycle in contemporary economies. These assessments are made in the context of the financial market instability that distinguishes the Great Recession from previous post-war slowdowns. Theorists and applied scholars in the fields of economics and mathematical economics discuss various approaches to understanding cycles and growth, and present mathematical and applied macro models to show how uncertainty shapes cycles by affecting the economic agent choice. Also included is an empirical section that investigates how the Great Recession affected households’ housing wealth, labour productivity and migration decisions. This book aims to: Propose a novel understanding of the business cycle by comparing the approaches of various scholars, starting from Hyman Minsky and Piero Ferri. Show that uncertainty is a main feature of the business cycle that affects decision-making and economic behaviour in general. Explain with mathematical models how the behaviour of economic agents can lead to cyclical paths for modern developed economies. Augment theory with empirical analysis of some central issues related to the Great Recession. This book comprises an original view of such widely discussed subjects as business cycles, uncertainty, economic growth and the Great Recession, constructed around theory, models and applications.

Book The Metallurgy of 17th and 18th Century Music Wire

Download or read book The Metallurgy of 17th and 18th Century Music Wire written by Martha Goodway and published by Pendragon Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the central mysteries of the craft of harpsichord-making involves the choice of stringing material. Years of research by a number of distinguished scientists under the guidance of senior authors, Jay Scott Odell, Chief Conservator, and Martha Goodway, Metallurgist, of the Smithsonian Institution have resulted in a pioneering study of the metallurgy of 17th-and 18th-century music wire. Drawing on the scientific resources and expertise of a number of leading institutions, these researchers have been able to analyze samples of antique stringing material, often of only microscopic size. Their conclusions add significantly to our understanding and appreciation of the tonal qualities of the historical harpsichord and will further the efforts of today's instrument makers to recreate them.
