This book was released on 2020-06-19 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Additive manufacturing (AM) of metals and composites using laser energy, direct energy deposition, electron beam methods, and wire arc melting have recently gained importance due to their advantages in fabricating the complex structure. Today, it has become possible to reliably manufacture dense parts with certain AM processes for many materials, including steels, aluminum and titanium alloys, superalloys, metal-based composites, and ceramic matrix composites. In the near future, the AM material variety will most likely grow further, with high-performance materials such as intermetallic compounds and high entropy alloys already under investigation. Additive Manufacturing Applications for Metals and Composites is a pivotal reference source that provides vital research on advancing methods and technological developments within additive manufacturing practices. Special attention is paid to the material design of additive manufacturing of parts, the choice of feedstock materials, the metallurgical behavior and synthesis principle during the manufacturing process, and the resulted microstructures and properties, as well as the relationship between these factors. While highlighting topics such as numerical modeling, intermetallic compounds, and statistical techniques, this publication is ideally designed for students, engineers, researchers, manufacturers, technologists, academicians, practitioners, scholars, and educators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at the current and future uses of magnesium-based products and their role in the world's environmental and technological revolution The lightest of all structural metals, having one-fourth the density of steel and two-thirds that of aluminum, magnesium has already been adopted as an alternative construction material in applications as far ranging as automotive and sports equipment, electronics, and space technology. Chapters include in-depth discussion of: The characteristics of pure magnesium—including atomic properties and crystal structure as well as physical, electrical, and mechanical properties Magnesium alloys—and the effects of the alloying elements, such as aluminum, lithium, copper, nickel, and silicon The properties of magnesium-based composites—and the effects of different types (metallic, ceramic, interconnected, and intermetallic) of reinforcements of varying length (from micron scale to nanometric length) Corrosion aspects of magnesium-based materials Magnesium-based products in medicine, sports equipment, and the automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries Bringing together, for the first time, the science, properties, and technologies relating to the current and future uses of magnesium, this important reference also offers readers a glimpse of a not-too-distant world in which environmental safety and sound engineering are a reality.

Book Semi Solid Processing of Alloys and Composites

Download or read book Semi Solid Processing of Alloys and Composites written by Shahrooz Nafisi and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-06-18 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semi-solid metal (SSM) processing, as a viable alternative manufacturing route to those of conventional casting and forging, has not yet been fully exploited despite nearly half a century since its introduction to the metal industry. The slow pace of adopting SSM routes may be due to various reasons, including capital costs, profit margins, and, most importantly, the lack of detailed analysis of various SSM processes in open literature to confidently establish their advantages over more conventional routes. Therefore, the SSM community must disseminate their findings more effectively to generate increased confidence in SSM processes in the eyes of our industrial leaders. As such, we have embarked on the task to invite the leaders in SSM research to share their findings in a Special Issue dedicated to semi-solid processing of metals and composites. SSM processing takes advantage of both forming and shaping characteristics usually employed for liquid and solid materials. In the absence of shear forces, the semi-solid metal has similar characteristics to solids, i.e., easily transferred and shaped; by applying a defined force, the viscosity is reduced and the material flows like a liquid. These unique dual characteristics have made SSM routes attractive alternatives to conventional casting on an industrial scale. With the intention of taking full advantage of SSM characteristics, it is crucial to understand SSM processing, including topics such as solidification and structural evolution, flow behavior through modelling and rheology, new processes and process control, alloy development, and properties in general. This Special Issue focuses on the recent research and findings in the field with the aim of filling the gap between industry and academia, and to shed light on some of the fundamentals of science and technology of semi-solid processing.
