Book METALLURGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF HIGH STRENGTH STRUCTURAL MATERIALS

Download or read book METALLURGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF HIGH STRENGTH STRUCTURAL MATERIALS written by and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report includes fracture toughness studies on some new titanium alloys as well as results of an initial feasibility study aimed at raising the optimum strength and toughness limits for titanium alloys through an approach involving thick section composites. The results of salt water stress-corrosion- cracking studies on a number of titanium alloys are described including a study concerning the effect of vacuum heat treatment on stress-corrosion-cracking resistance of titanium alloys. Fatigue crack propagation studies in air and in salt water on the pressure vessel steels A302B, A201B, and A517F are discussed; and the results compared to the actual service performance of these same materials in PVRC program studies. Preliminary fracture toughness correlation diagrams are presented for high strength steels based upon fracture mechanics and engineering test methods. The latest versions of the Fracture Toughness Index Diagrams for steels, titanium alloys and aluminum alloys, a usual feature of this report series and which are based upon engineering test methods, are presented and the significance of the features briefly discussed. Fracture toughness studies on thick plates of 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V, and a 'new' 9Ni-4Co steel are reported. In addition, the results are presented for similar studies on welds of 2Mn-2Ni in 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steels and welds of 9Ni-4Co, 12Ni-3Cr-3Mo and 17Ni- 2Co-3Mo compositions.

Book Metallurgy and Design of Alloys with Hierarchical Microstructures

Download or read book Metallurgy and Design of Alloys with Hierarchical Microstructures written by Krishnan K. Sankaran and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metallurgy and Design of Alloys with Hierarchical Microstructures covers the fundamentals of processing-microstructure-property relationships and how multiple properties are balanced and optimized in materials with hierarchical microstructures widely used in critical applications. The discussion is based principally on metallic materials used in aircraft structures; however, because they have sufficiently diverse microstructures, the underlying principles can easily be extended to other materials systems. With the increasing microstructural complexity of structural materials, it is important for students, academic researchers and practicing engineers to possess the knowledge of how materials are optimized and how they will behave in service. The book integrates aspects of computational materials science, physical metallurgy, alloy design, process design, and structure-properties relationships, in a manner not done before. It fills a knowledge gap in the interrelationships of multiple microstructural and deformation mechanisms by applying the concepts and tools of designing microstructures for achieving combinations of engineering properties—such as strength, corrosion resistance, durability and damage tolerance in multi-component materials—used for critical structural applications. Discusses the science behind the properties and performance of advanced metallic materials Provides for the efficient design of materials and processes to satisfy targeted performance in materials and structures Enables the selection and development of new alloys for specific applications based upon evaluation of their microstructure as illustrated in this work

Book Steels Metallurgy and Applications

Download or read book Steels Metallurgy and Applications written by David Llewellyn and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-02-24 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: STEELS: Metallurgy and Applications provides a metallurgical understanding of commercial steel grades and the design, manufacturing and service requirements that govern their application. The properties of different steels are described, detailing the effect of composition, processing and heat treatment. Where appropriate an introduction is given to standard specifications and design codes provided on component manufacture and property requirements for successful service performance. The book deals with steel products in some depth, in four chapters covering wide strip, structural steels, engineering and stainless steel grades. At the begining of each chapter an overview is given which details important features of the grades and a historical perspective of their development. Also featured are up to date information on steel prices and specifications. David Llewellyn has over thirty years experience in the steel industry and is currently lecturing in the Materials Engineering Department at University College Swansea. '..the book unfolds into an easily readable and a valuable source of highly relevant and contemporary information on steels' - METALS AND MATERIALS '.. a high quality product from all points of view' - INSTITUTE OF METALS AND MATERIALS AUSTRALASIA features up to date information on steel prices and specifications.

Book Fundamental Aspects of Structural Alloy Design

Download or read book Fundamental Aspects of Structural Alloy Design written by Robert Jaffee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS OF STRUCTURAL ALLOY DESIGN is the proceedings of the tenth Battelle Colloquium in the Materials Sciences, held in Seattle, Washington, and Harrison Hot Springs, B.C., September 15-19, 1975. The theme of the conference was the emerging science of alloy design. Although the relationships of properties of alloys to their composition and structure have long been a dominant theme in physical metallurgy, it is only recently that metallurgists have turned their attention from the analytical, post hoc study of the structure-property relationship to the synthesis approach of alloy design. As usual in the Battelle colloquia, the first day started with a group of introductory lectures presented by leaders in the field, each emphasizing his personal approach to the problem. This provided a historical perspective for the colloquium. These papers, together with the banquet address of Professor J. R. Low, Jr., who was honored at the colloquium, comprise the introductory section of these proceedings. Alloy design is generally specific to a given application. Thus, the needs in alloy design in a number of important applications, gas turbines, electrical-power-generation equipment, airframes, pressure vessels, and nuclear applications were presented in a group of papers. An agenda discus sion on "Needs in Alloy Design" followed. These papers give the external constraints on alloy design applications, and criteria for mechanical, physical, and chemical properties for which the alloys must be designed.

Book excerpt: Steels: Metallurgy and Applications deals with the metallurgy and applications of steel and covers the broad spectrum of the mainstream commercial grades as well as the service or manufacturing requirements that govern their use. Standard specifications and some of the design considerations that provide satisfactory service performance are considered. Brief reference is also made to some of the steel prices that were effective on January 1, 1991. Comprised of five chapters, this book begins with an overview of technological trends in the steelmaking industry since 1980s, paying particular attention to energy conservation, iron-making, continuous casting, and product requirements. The next chapter is devoted to low-carbon strip steels and their cold-forming behavior, applications, and metallurgical factors affecting cold formability. The third chapter focuses on low-carbon structural steels and their strengthening mechanisms, while the fourth chapter considers engineering steels and their heat treatment aspects. The final chapter describes stainless steels and their composition-structure relationships, commercial grades, corrosion resistance, welding, and cold working. The mechanical properties of stainless steels at elevated and sub-zero temperatures are also examined. This monograph will be of interest to students and practicing metallurgists.
