Book Physiologic and Chemical Basis for Metal Toxicity

Download or read book Physiologic and Chemical Basis for Metal Toxicity written by B. Venugopal and published by Springer. This book was released on 1977-01-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our purpose is to provide understanding for appropriate use of metals in a technical society. Knowledge of metal toxicity is needed for the preven tion, prediction, diagnosis, and therapy of adverse reactions from excess metals in mammals. Metal Toxicity in Mammals is presented in two volumes. Volume 1, Physiologic and Chemical Basis for Metal Toxic ity, provides the basis for understanding the toxic actions of metals recorded in Volume 2, Chemical Toxicity of Metals and Metalloids. The details and bases for many concepts summarized in Volume I are given, with appropriate references, in Volume 2. Thus, references for specific items in Volume 2 are not generally given in Volume 1. The authors reviewed the known toxicity of several heavy metals in anticipation of their use as multinutrient markers for NASA. As more and more metals were considered, the need for a complete review became obvious. This treatise supplants onerous searches of metal-toxicity litera ture up to 1975 and reviews the toxicity of all the metals of the periodic table on the basis of available relevant data. Books on pharmacological, nutritional, medical, veterinary, or industrial toxicity contain information about selected metals. More complete data about metals of public concern, such as mercury, lead, and cadmium, may be found in numerous books and reviews. The reader should refer to general texts and basic reference works, when specific references are not given, for general information.

Book Poisoning in the Modern World

Download or read book Poisoning in the Modern World written by Ozgur Karcioglu and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-06-19 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 400 years ago, Swiss alchemist and physician Paracelsus (1493-1541) cited: "All substances are poisons; there is none that is not a poison. The right dose differentiates a poison from a remedy." This is often condensed to: "The dose makes the poison." So, why are we overtly anxious about intoxications? In fact, poisons became a global problem with the industrial revolution. Pesticides, asbestos, occupational chemicals, air pollution, and heavy metal toxicity maintain high priority worldwide, especially in developing countries. Children between 0 and 5 years old are the most vulnerable to both acute and chronic poisonings, while older adults suffer from the chronic effects of chemicals. This book aims to raise awareness about the challenges of poisons, to help clinicians understand current issues in toxicology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The activities of modern society have unleashed a range of toxic chemicals into the global environment. Many of these toxicants are now being detected in increasing quantities in the tissues of marine mammals, most notably in top predators who acquire relatively large amounts of toxic chemicals by ingesting contaminated prey. Book excerpt: The Permanent Commission and International Association on Occupational Health (PCIAOH) established in 1969 a Subcommittee on the Toxicology of Metals under the chairmanship of Lars Friberg. This committee, which later was named the Scientific Committee on the Toxicology of Metals, has organized a number of previous meetings that have led to publications in three major areas of metal toxicology: a preliminary meeting in Slanchev Bryag, Bulgaria in- 1971, followed by a meeting in 1972 in Buenos Aires, Argentina which produced two reports (Dukes and Friberg, 1971; Task Group on Metal Accumulation, 1973), that discussed the metabolism of metals with special reference to absorption, excretion and biological half-times. The effects and dose-response relationships of toxic metals, including a discussion of general principles, was the second major topic addressed by the Scientific Committee at a meeting in Tokyo in 1974 (Nordberg, 1976). The philosophy of this conference, as well as the previous one in Buenos Aires, was based on the concept of a "threshold dose" for the occurrence of adverse effects. In a conference held in Atlanta, USA in 1980, the scope of discussion on metal effects was broadened to include the role of metals in carcinogenesis. Thus, for the first time, the Scientific Committee took under consideration the possibility of non-threshold relationships (Belman and Nordberg, 1981). In addition, the Scientific Committee on the Toxicology of Metals organized a workshop on metal interactions in Stockholm 1977 (Nordberg et al.
