Book Metal Mines of Llanengan Mining Ventures in a North Wales Parish

Download or read book Metal Mines of Llanengan Mining Ventures in a North Wales Parish written by Robert William Vernon and published by . This book was released on 2022-12-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relatively unknown Llanengan metal mining field is found on the St. Tudwal's headland, on the tip of the Lleyn Peninsula, North Wales. Its isolated position meant that it never was given the same publicity as many of the major metal mining areas. Nevertheless it was a hive of activity in the latter half of the 19th century, and the mines were deepened with the aid of steam power, used for pumping water out of the workings, and for winding ore to the surface. Everything, from mine engines to coal was brought into the area on ships. The book details the history of mining in the area from the 17th century through to its eventual demise at the end of the 19th century. Initially mining was conducted by partnerships that were eventually superseded by London based companies that acquired capital to purchase the necessary machinery to deepen the mines. Now there is very little to show that this area was once a hive of industrial activity, although the final chapter does suggest a small heritage walk around the area. For a number of years, John Bennett and Rob Vernon were involved with the historical study of Welsh metal mining. Their series of seven detailed books on the Gwydyr Forest mines was a substantial contribution to the recording of Welsh mining history. In addition, they were also involved with mine site conservation projects in the Gwydyr Forest and elsewhere in Wales. John sadly died in 2019, and Rob is now involved with other aspects of mining history. At the time of the publication of the first edition of Metal Mines of Llanengan in 2002, it did take their interests further and brought into the public domain a relatively unknown Welsh mining area. The publication of this second edition will hopefully make another generation of mining historians aware of this interesting mining field and is dedicated to John and his wife Elizabeth.

Book Hard At Work In Factories And Mines

Download or read book Hard At Work In Factories And Mines written by Carolyn Tuttle and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children have worked for centuries and continue to work. The history of the economic development of Europe and North America includes numerous instances of child labor. Manufacturers in England, France, Belgium, Germany, and Prussia as well as the United States used child labor during the initial stages of industrialization. In addition, child labor prevails currently in many industries in the Third World. This book examines the explanations for child labor in an economic context. A model of the labor market for children is constructed using the new economics of the family framework to derive the supply of child labor and the traditional labor theory of marginal productivity to derive the demand for child labor. The model is placed into a historical context and is used to test the existing supply-and-demand-induced explanations for an increase in child labor during the British Industrial Revolution. Evidence on the extent of childrens employment, their specific tasks and trends in their wages from the textile industry and mining industry is used to support the argument that it was technological innovation which created a demand for child labor. Certain mechanical inventions and process innovations increased the demand for child labor in three ways: increasing number of assistants needed; increasing the substitutability between children and adults, and creating work situations that only children could fill. Specific innovations in the production of textiles and in the extraction of coal, copper and tin are highlighted to show how they favored the use of child workers over adult workers. The book concludes with a look at the current situations in developing countries where child labor is prevalent. Considerable insight is gained on the role of child labor in economic development when this historical model is applied to the contemporary situation.

Book Hidden Geographies

Download or read book Hidden Geographies written by Marko Krevs and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book defines and discusses the term “hidden geographies” in two ways: systematically and by presenting a variety of examples of the research fields and topics concerning hidden geographies, with the aim of stimulating further basic and applied research in this area. While the term is quite rarely used in the scientific literature (more often as a figure of speech than to illustrate or problematize its deeper meaning), we argue that hidden geographies are everywhere and many of them have significant impacts on (other) natural and social phenomena and processes, subsequently triggering changes, for example in landscape, economy, culture, health or quality of life. The introductory section of the book conceptualises hidden geographies and discusses cognitive geography, symbolization of space, and the hidden geographies in mystical literature. Case studies of hidden environmental geographies address soils, air pollution, coastal pollution and the allocation of an astronomical tourism site. Revealing hidden historical and sacred places is illustrated through examples of the visualisation of the subterranean mining landscape, the analysis of the historical road network and trade, border stones and historical spatial boundaries, and the monastic Carthusian space. Hidden urban geographies are discussed in terms of the urban development of an entire city, presenting the role of geography in rescuing architecture, revealing illegal urbanisation, and the quality of habitation in Roma neighbourhoods. Case studies of hidden population geographies shed light on the ageing of rural populations and the impact of spatial-demographic disparities on fertility variations. Discussions of hidden social and economic geographies problematize recent social changes and conflicts in a country, present the implementation of the fourth industrial revolution and borders as hidden obstacles in the organisation of public transport. Hidden geographies are explicitly linked to perceptions and explanations in case studies that address local responses to perceived marginalisation in a city, the solo women travellers’ perceived risk and safety, and hidden geographical contexts of visible post-war landscapes. The book brings such a diversity of views, ideas and examples related to hidden geographies that can serve both to deepen their understanding and their various impacts on our lives and environment, and to attract further cross-disciplinary interest in considering hidden geographies – in research and in our every-day lives.
