Book Investigative Strategies for Lead Source Attribution at Superfund Sites Associated with Mining Activities

Download or read book Investigative Strategies for Lead Source Attribution at Superfund Sites Associated with Mining Activities written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Superfund program of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created in the 1980s to address human-health and environmental risks posed by abandoned or uncontrolled hazardous-waste sites. Identification of Superfund sites and their remediation is an expensive multistep process. As part of this process, EPA attempts to identify parties that are responsible for the contamination and thus financially responsible for remediation. Identification of potentially responsible parties is complicated because Superfund sites can have a long history of use and involve contaminants that can have many sources. Such is often the case for mining sites that involve metal contamination; metals occur naturally in the environment, they can be contaminants in the wastes generated at or released from the sites, and they can be used in consumer products, which can degrade and release the metals back to the environment. This report examines the extent to which various sources contribute to environmental lead contamination at Superfund sites that are near lead-mining areas and focuses on sources that contribute to lead contamination at sites near the Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District. It recommends potential improvements in approaches used for assessing sources of lead contamination at or near Superfund sites.

Book A Geophysical Characterization of the Soda Butte Creek Drainage

Download or read book A Geophysical Characterization of the Soda Butte Creek Drainage written by Eric E. Nyberg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Geophysical Characterization of the Soda Butte Creek Drainage: Yellowstone National Park Geophysical techniques were used to help characterize the subsurface of the Soda Butte Creek drainage. Both seismic refraction surveys and vertical electrical soundings (ves) were performed in an attempt to better understand the characteristics of the local aquifer. The study site is located near the northeastern boundary of Yellowstone National Park, and it is approximately three miles from the community of Cooke City, Montana. Soda Butte Creek is a major tributary of the Lamar River, which in turn is a major tributary of the Yellowstone River; thus, this investigation will assist the National Park Service in decisions concerning future development along the Park's northeastern boundary. Three seismic refraction surveys and seven soundings have been used to define the following parameters associated with the valley's subsurface. Book The Art of Yellowstone Science

Download or read book The Art of Yellowstone Science written by Bruce William Fouke and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Art and science both originate from the same human desire to understand the world within and around us. In the pages of this book, photographic art at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park is melded with cutting-edge natural sciences to search for common laws of nature through the power of observation and a willingness to embrace the unexpected. Biological evolution is the essential expression for this combination of photographic art and science. Mammoth is a window on the universe, through which fundamental understandings of nature can be directly applied around the world and throughout the cosmos."--provided by publisher.
