Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mike Royko: The Chicago Tribune Collection 1984–1997 is an expansive new volume of the longtime Chicago news legend’s work. Encompassing thousands of his columns, all of which originally appeared in the Chicago Tribune, this is the first collection of Royko work to solely cover his time at the Tribune. Covering politics, culture, sports, and more, Royko brings his trademark sarcasm and cantankerous wit to a complete compendium of his last 14 years as a newspaper man. Organized chronologically, these columns display Royko's talent for crafting fictional conversations that reveal the truth of the small-minded in our society. From cagey political points to hysterical take-downs of "meatball" sports fans, Royko's writing was beloved and anticipated anxiously by his fans. In plain language, he "tells it like it is" on subjects relevant to modern society. In addition to his columns, the book features Royko's obituary and articles written about him after his death, telling the tale of his life and success. This ultimate collection is a must-read for Royko fans, longtime Chicago Tribune readers, and Chicagoans who love the city's rich history of dedicated and insightful journalism.

Book The Securitization of Memorial Space

Download or read book The Securitization of Memorial Space written by Nicholas S. Paliewicz and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Securitization of Memorial Space argues that the National September 11 Memorial and Memorial Museum is a securitized site of memory—what Foucault called a dispositif—that polices visitors and publics to remember trauma, darkness, and victimage in ways that perpetuate the “necessity” of the Global War on Terrorism. Contributing to studies in public memory, rhetoric and argumentation, and critical security studies, Nicholas S. Paliewicz and Marouf Hasian Jr. show how various human and nonhuman actors participated in complicated argumentative formations that have mobilized political, performative, and militaristic practices of anti-terroristic violence in other parts of the world. While there were times that certain argumentative stakeholders—such as local New Yorkers—questioned the necessity of securitizing this site of memory, agentic factions including the families of those who died on 9/11, public supporters, security agents, and politicians created an ideologically oriented security assemblage that remembers 9/11 through counter-terroristic performances at Ground Zero. In chronological order from the 2001 “dustbowl” to the present popularization of 9/11 memories, the authors present seven chapters of rich rhetorical analysis that show how the National September 11 Memorial and Memorial Museum perpetuates grief, uncertainty, and angst that affects public memory in multidirectional ways.

Because the hand I’d been dealt was cruel and riddled with pain. My family is now the motorcycle club I’m the VP of. The president, Adler, has given me a place to belong, and that’s all I need. Until I see her on that stage. Athena Lawson wrecks my world with one look. And with one taste, I’m wrapped around her finger. I’m definitely not the right man for her, but I’m too selfish to let her go. ~*~*~ Athena I refuse to take handouts. Everything I want or need, I get for myself. And with the cost of living so high, stripping is the easiest route for me to take. The men I dance for and dance on are just mere people–not even a blip on my radar. But the moment my eyes meet his across the room, I’m sucked into his vortex. I want to know everything I can about the man who barely speaks a word but says so much with a simple look. My blood runs through my veins simply for his touch. My heart pumps blood through my chest just to hear his grunts and short sentences. My fingers itch to touch him and learn every part of his body. With one look from the brooding man, I want to be completely his. I just hope I can convince him he deserves everything good in this world.

Book Sacred Cows

Download or read book Sacred Cows written by Danielle Teller and published by Diversion Books. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A husband-and-wife doctor team offers fresh and startling perspective on one of our most cherished and misunderstood institutions. Drs. Astro and Danielle Teller know better than most that finding the right partner in life doesn’t always happen the first time around. Through their own divorces they learned how widely held cultural assumptions and misinformation that nobody thinks to question—what they refer to as “sacred cows”—create unnecessary heartache for people who are already suffering through a terrible time. Do you think, for example, that the divorce rate in the United States is rising? Or that children are harmed by divorce? Most people do, but it turns out that neither of these notions is supported by the data. Combining the rigor that has established them as leaders in their respective fields along with a dose of good-natured humor, the Tellers ask readers to take a fresh look at seven common sacred cows: the Holy Cow, the Expert Cow, the Selfish Cow, the Defective Cow, the Innocent Victim Cow, the One True Cow, and the Other Cow. This is not a book that is “for” marriage or “for” divorce, but “for” the freedom to decide how to live most honestly and happily either as part of a couple or a single person.

Book excerpt: "A old manuscript is unearthed with the title 'The Tragedy Of Life's Cruel Wisdom By William Of Stratford 1615', and it is immediately hailed as a lost, and probably last play, by Shakespeare. My book - 'Life's Cruel Wisdom' - is what I have called a 'novelog'. Brian Jones, the manuscript's discoverer, scans and uploads pages from the unearthed manuscript and invites people to post comments on his blog after they have read and interpreted a page. As various bloggers post their comments, opinion about the manuscript's authenticity continually shifts between true and false. Some bloggers misinterpret words in the manuscript and reach often quite absurd conclusions, while others are inspired to tell their life stories. Finally, however, as the drama of the play unfolds, an unsettling comparison begins to emerge between this Elizabethan stage play and today's world"--Author's website.
