Book excerpt: The invention of metal detecting technology during the Second World War allowed the development of a hobby that has traditionally been vilified by archaeologists as an uncontrollable threat to the proper study of the past. This book charts the relationship between archaeologists and metal detectors over the past fifty odd years within an international context. It questions whether the great majority of metal detectors need be seen as a threat or, as some argue, enthusiastic members of the public with a valid and legitimate interest in our shared heritage, charting the expansion of metal detecting as a phenomenon and examining its role within traditional archaeology. A particular strength of the book is its detailed case studies, from South Africa, the USA, Poland and Germany, where metal detectors have worked with, and contributed significantly towards, archaeological understanding and research. With contributions from key individuals in both the metal detecting and archaeological communities, this publication highlights the need for increased understanding and cooperation and asks a number of questions crucial to the development of a long term relationship between archaeologists and metal detectors. PETER G. STONE is Head of the School of Arts and Cultures and formerly Director of the International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies at the University of Newcastle. He has been interested in the public's role and interest in archaeology for over twenty-five years and has published widely on this topic, especially with respect to formal and informal education. SUZIE THOMAS is a research postgraduate studying the relationships between archaeology and metal detecting.

This unique study draws on the experience of the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, which joined together in a co-operative enterprise involving the York Archaelogical Trust and the City of York Council, to hold a number of open days on the site of the proposed new village on the edge of the city of York. The event was designed to involve the local community and particularly local metal detectorists in the archaeological examination of the site as part of the planning process. Archaeology and metal detecting outlines good working practice and presents guidelines and protocols on how to integrate metal detector users and other members of the community into the planning and development process. Community involvement in the archaeological investigation of greenfield sites was found to provide a great opportunity for local people, including metal detectorists, to take part in integrated research into the history of their local surroundings and the processes involved can be applied to any greenfield development in the UK.

Book excerpt: The location known as 'A Riverine Site Near York (ARSNY)' represents a category of Viking site known from the historical record but one that until recently had remained largely undetected archaeologically: the Viking camp. The published investigations at Repton, Derbyshire, although undoubtedly important, created a false paradigm for the scale and character of such sites. The discovery and investigation of ARSNY, along with Torksey in Lincolnshire and Woodstown in Ireland, has revolutionized understanding of the size and character of such sites, with wider implications for the aspects of Viking warfare, urbanization, precious metal economies and the transition from raiding to permanent settlement. This volume includes the detailed publication of the ARSNY site, along with the first detailed comparison of the sites as a group and of their wider significance. One particular feature of the site is that the finds shed new light on the character of Viking exchange in Northumbria on the eve of settlement. The volume concludes with a synthesis of the evidence from ARSNY and York with these other groups of finds to provide a comprehensive overview of the monetary developments which took place in Yorkshire in the period between the Viking settlement of the mid-870s and the expulsion of the last Viking king of Northumbria in 954, making this a milestone publication for the understanding of precious metal economies in the Viking Age.
