Book Molecular Mechanisms Of Oxygen Activation

Download or read book Molecular Mechanisms Of Oxygen Activation written by Osamu Hayaishi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Mechanisms of Oxygen Activation reviews some of the major advances that have been made in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying oxygen activation, with emphasis on the role of oxygen activation in contemporary biological processes. The biological role of oxygenases in the metabolism of fatty acids and steroids is discussed, along with the functions of heme-containing dioxygenases, a-ketoglutarate-coupled dioxygenases, and pterin-requiring aromatic amino acid hydroxylases. This book is comprised of 14 chapters and begins with an overview of the general properties and biological functions of oxygenases, along with the chemical aspects of oxygen fixation reactions. The reader is then introduced to research concerning fatty acid and steroid oxygenases which has appeared in the literature since 1962, paying particular attention to the mechanism of oxygenation and the biosynthesis and metabolism of steroids. Subsequent chapters explore the biological functions of a variety of oxygenases such as heme-containing dioxygenases, copper-containing oxygenases, flavoprotein oxygenases, and pterin-requiring aromatic amino acid hydroxylases. Superoxide dismutase, cytochrome c oxidase, peroxidase, and bacterial monoxygenases are also considered. This monograph should serve as a valuable reference for biochemists as well as undergraduate and graduate students of biochemistry.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642663532
  • Pages : 744 pages

Download or read book Anabolic Androgenic Steroids written by Charles D. Kochakian and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was planned to provide a comprehensive survey of the role of the anabolic-androgenic steroids in the vital economy exclusive of the androgenic (sexual) functions. It seemed appropriate to bring together all of this information in an organized fashion in one volume at this time not only to serve as a source of information but also to indicate and suggest areas that need further exploration. The anabolic action of the steroid hormones has gone through a period of great activity in both basic and clinical research. A complete understanding of the manifold anabolic effects still remains to be elucidated and the art of clinical application is only gradually becoming apparent. This volume should be useful not only to the experienced investigator in both basic and clinical research but also for the novice. Furthermore, it should serve as a source of information for the careful use of these steroids in certain metabolic diseases. These steroids have had wide clinical application with variable results. In many instances further careful exploration is suggested. Other instances have demonstrated varying degrees of usefulness.

  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2013-10-22
  • ISBN : 1483265048
  • Pages : 247 pages

Download or read book Anabolic Steroids written by H.-L. Krüskemper and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anabolic Steroids attempts to trace the development of anabolic steroids in the chemical, experimental biological, and clinical disciplines, and presents a precise outline of the current state of substantiated knowledge. This book deals with anabolic steroids derived from natural androgens and characterized by their stimulatory action on the biosynthesis of tissue protein and by their simultaneous low androgenicity. The biochemical part is a review of substantiated and current knowledge based largely on experimental results with animals, while the clinical part attempts to bring out the pathophysiological rationale of therapy with anabolic steroids, again based on experimental data. The book begins with a discussion of the nomenclature and chemistry of anabolic steroids. This is followed by separate chapters on the metabolism, activities, and mechanism of action of anabolic steroids; clinical application of anabolic steroids, side effects, and test procedures.

Book Foreign Compound Metabolism in Mammals

Download or read book Foreign Compound Metabolism in Mammals written by D E Hathway and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book Enzymology and Molecular Biology of Carbonyl Metabolism 6

Download or read book Enzymology and Molecular Biology of Carbonyl Metabolism 6 written by Henry Weiner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1982, our ever-expanding group of investigators has been meeting in exotic parts of the world to discuss aspects of three enzyme systems. The 1996 meeting was no exception. Nearly 90 scientists from 15 countries met in the small city of Deadwood, South Dakota, for four days of stimulating talks and posters and incredible scenery. Once more this meeting reflected the changing trends in biochemical research. At the 1982 meeting most of the speakers discussed isolating new enzymes and trying to characterize them. At this meeting many speakers discussed interpretations of three-dimensional struc ture or regulatory elements of the genes controlling for the tissue-specific expression of the enzyme. Hopefully, readers will find the proceedings of the meeting to be of interest. Though they reflects the scientific information that was presented at the meeting, they do not indicate the level of personal interactions that went on during the meeting. Once again, the willingness of the participants to discuss unpublished data and to share thoughts about the future directions of their research helped make this, like our previous seven meetings, a special scientific experience for those who attended.
