Book Messerschmitt Me 210 Me 410 Hornisse Hornet

Download or read book Messerschmitt Me 210 Me 410 Hornisse Hornet written by Peter Petrick and published by Cascade Photographics. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Me210 and Me410 were originally planned as further developments of the twin-engined Messerschmitt Bf110 as the Luftwaffe sought a high-speed heavy fighter and gun platform. First flown in September 1939, the early version, Me210, proved extremely troublesome, suffering from in-flight instability and landing-gear problems. There were frequent accidents and production was terminated in April 1942 after 352 aircraft had been complete. A total of some 370 further examples were left incomplete on the production line. First flown in 1942, the sleek Daimler-Benz-powered Me410, however, was much more successful and was manufactured in large numbers as a two-seat tactical aircraft fighter for ground-attacks and reconnaissance operations. More than 100 different variants and sub-variants had been produced by the end of 1944, using virtually every weapon available to the Luftwaffe. This book will enable readers to distinguish between the multitudes of sub-types and identify the various modifications, weapons systems, and conversion packs that were used.

Book Messerschmitt Bf 110 Me 210 Me 410

Download or read book Messerschmitt Bf 110 Me 210 Me 410 written by Heinz Mankau and published by Schiffer Publishing. This book was released on 2003-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, this richly illustrated book offers a comprehensive, detailed examination of the legendary Messerschmitt Bf 110, Me 210, and Me 410 series. By 1935 the Bf 109 had made Messerschmitt the leading manufacturer of fighter aircraft in Germany. The twin-engined Bf 110 followed on its heels in 1936, a type the Luftwaffe took on in large numbers as a long-range fighter, heavy-fighter, fighter-bomber, night-fighter and reconnaissance platform. As its successor, Messerschmitt developed the better performing Me 210, which flew for the first time in 1939. But this airframe soon began manifesting serious design flaws, and accidents with the Me 210 quickly started piling up due to the types questionable flight handling characteristics. The Luftwaffe refused to accept any more aircraft as a result, and at a stroke the types overzealous full scale production ground to a halt. More powerful engines and a number of design changes saw this aircraft produced from 1943 to 1944 under the designation of Me 410, and as such the type gave an excellent accounting of itself in service with the Luftwaffe.

Book The Messerschmitt 210 410 Story

Download or read book The Messerschmitt 210 410 Story written by Jan Forsgren and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1938, the Reichsluftfahrtsministerium (German Air Ministry, RLM), issued a requirement for a new twin-engine heavy fighter to replace the Me 110. This type of combat aeroplane was known as Zerstörer (Destroyer). The first prototype flew in September 1939. The Me 210 proved very difficult to fly, having numerous deficiencies. It was said to be deadlier to its crews than the enemy. Nevertheless, the Luftwaffe ordered the Me 210 into production. Operational trials began in late 1941, but it was eventually acknowledged that the aircraft had to be redesigned in order to be accepted into Luftwaffe service. The whole Me 210 debacle proved a huge scandal. A redesigned variant, the Me 410 began to reach Luftwaffe units in mid-1943. Even if the Me 210 and Me 410 were similar in appearance, the latter had to be redesigned to avoid the extremely poor reputation of the Me 210. The Me 410 proved a quite successful aeroplane, being used as a heavy fighter and for reconnaissance duties. Its closest Allied equivalent was the British DH 98 Mosquito. More than 1,500 Me 210/410s were built in Germany and Hungary, with only two Me 410s surviving today.

Book excerpt: Messerschmitt Me 210 - German heavy fighter. Work on the design began in late 1930s with a goal of creating a versatile aircraft, equally capable as a fighter, dive bomber or a reconnaissance platform. The machine was an all-metal, low-wing monoplane, featuring twin vertical stabilizers. Full-scale production of the Me 210 was launched in 1941. The aircraft was powered by a pair of Daimler-Benz DB 601F engines, each producing 959 kW of power. Messerschmitt Me 410 - German heavy twin-engine fighter and fast bomber, meant to be an improvement of the unsuccessful Me 210 design. The aircraft was equipped with new Daimler-Benz DB603A inverted V engines, rated at 1,750 and 1,850 hp. Powered by those engines the Me 410 was capable of speeds up to 628 km/h. The aircraft's armament consisted of two 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns, a pair of 13 mm MG 131 machine guns and four remotely controlled 20 mm MG 151 cannons. The Me 410 could also carry up to 1,000 kg of bombs. Thanks to its fairly long range and excellent performance characteristics, the aircraft was often employed in the bomber destroyer role.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Automatic Upward-firing Twin MG FF/MCommonly known as the 'Schrage Musik' (Jazz Music), this oblique upward-firing weapon developed in 1942 is reported to have been based upon a suggestion by night-fighter pilot Major Rudolf Schoenert and approved by General Kammhuber. Reflected light beams from an enemy aircraft, captured by a caesium photocell in the infra-red 'Zossen A', activated the twin 20mm MG FF/M weapons when flying beneath the enemy aircraft. Jointly developed by the AEG and Carl Zeiss firms, only a few examples of the "Zossen A2" were used operationally. This infra-red sensor was also considered at one stage for installation in the Me 163B.The MG FF was a drum-fed, 20 mm aircraft autocannon, developed in 1936 by Ikaria Werke Berlin of Germany. It was a derivative of the Swiss Oerlikon FF F cannon, itself a development of the German World War I Becker 20 mm cannon, and was designed to be used in fixed or flexible mountings, as both an offensive and a defensive weapon. It saw widespread use in those roles by the German Luftwaffe, particularly during the early stages of World War II, although from 1941 onwards it was gradually replaced by the 20 mm MG 151/20.

Book Hitler s Fatal Miscalculation

Download or read book Hitler s Fatal Miscalculation written by Klaus H. Schmider and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hitler's decision to declare war on the United States has baffled generations of historians. In this revisionist new history of those fateful months, Klaus H. Schmider seeks to uncover the chain of events which would incite the German leader to declare war on the United States in December 1941. He provides new insights not just on the problems afflicting German strategy, foreign policy and war production but, crucially, how they were perceived at the time at the top levels of the Third Reich. Schmider sees the declaration of war on the United States not as an admission of defeat or a gesture of solidarity with Japan, but as an opportunistic gamble by the German leader. This move may have appeared an excellent bet at the time, but would ultimately doom the Third Reich.

After a relatively convincing start in Poland in September 1939, the performance of the Zerstörer (destroyer) units, declined rapidly with heavy losses, so much so that at the end of the Battle of Britain it was decided to withdraw the Bf 110s from service and cease production. After the failure of its designated successor, the Me 210, the Bf 110 started a second career which was indeed infinitely more glorious since it scored more kills not only than any other Luftwaffe night-fighter but also more than all the aircraft of this type in all the air forces fighting in World War Two…

Book excerpt: Unquestionably the best American fighter of World War 2, the North American P-51 Mustang served in large numbers with the USAAF's Eighth Air Force from late 1943 until VE Day, and was the mount of most aces in-theatre. Charged with the responsibility of escorting huge formations of B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator bombers on daylight raids deep into Germany, the P-51 pilots of the various fighter groups within the 'Mighty Eighth' went head to head with the cream of the Luftwaffe's fighter squadrons for control of the skies over the Third Reich. Aircraft of the Aces 1, 19 and 24 are also available in a single volume as 'Aces of the Mighty Eighth'.
