Book Messerschmitt Bf 109 in Action Op

Download or read book Messerschmitt Bf 109 in Action Op written by Hans-Heiri Stapfer and published by MMD-Squadron Signal. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time the Third Reich collapsed in 1945, the Messerschmitt firm had produced some 34,000 examples of the legendary Bf 109, making it the most prolific aircraft of the era. Key to this tremendous output and to the plane's longevity was a simple design that allowed rapid production--even by unskilled Zwangsarbeiter (forced laborers)--and gave Messerschmitt an advantage over the Focke Wulf Fw 190. The Nazis came to power in January 1933 intent on scrapping the Versailles Treaty that banned Germany from having an air force. Issued on February 15, 1934, the request by the new Reichsluftfahrtsministerium (RLM/Air Ministry) for a single-seat daytime air combat fighter with a top speed of 400 km/h brought a new lease of life to the financially strapped Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (BFW). BFW began work on the plane, its first military aircraft, that December, and in May 1935 the Bf 109 V1 prototype took to the air--10 months before the first Spitfire--launching the career of an iconic plane whose numerous versions would serve the Reich until the end of World War II. The Bf 109 B-1 with a two-blade propeller was the first variant to be mass produced and the first to see combat. Jagdgruppe 88 of the Legion Condor, serving Francisco Franco's Nationalists in Spain, took delivery of its first Bf 109 B-1 aircraft in May 1937. The 39 Messerschmitts went on to play a significant role in the Spanish Civil War. Other variants followed in short order. The Bf 109 C introduced wing armament to the craft. The Bf 109 D filled out Switzerland's air force. With their new three-bladed propeller, the 4,000 "Emils" (Bf 109 E) that rolled out between November 1938 and March 1939 formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter fleet during the first third of the Second World War. The fighter got a power boost when the "Gustav" (Bf 109 G) came out with the addition of the new Daimler Benz DB 605 A engine. The Luftwaffe began receiving the Bf 109 G in the summer of 1942 and output of the Gustav continued until January 1945. In October 1944, delivery to combat units began of the Bf 109 K-4, a version intended to bridge the gap, pending mass production of the Messerschmitt Me 262 A jet fighter.

Download or read book Bf 109 Aces of the Russian Front written by John Weal and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-20 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highest scoring aces of any aerial conflict were the Luftwaffe pilots involved in the bloody combats on the Russian Front. The most common fighter used by these pilots was the Bf 109, which was involved in the action from Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, through to the doomed Defence of the Reich in 1945. Units like JGs 5, 52 and 54 all flew the Messerschmitt fighter, progressing from Emil to Gustav variants. This volume includes all the high-scoring aces, and explains just how difficult a job the Jagdwaffe faced on the Russian Front, and how its experts achieved such overwhelming scores. Aircraft of the Aces 6 and 37 are also available in a single volume as 'German Aces of the Russian Front'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bf 109 E "Emil" entered service in 1938. The aircraft's DB 601 engine transformed its performance, making the Messerschmitt fighter one of the most capable anywhere in the world at the time. After seeing action late in the Spanish Civil War, the Emil was Germany's premier fighter aircraft during the early years of World War II, seeing action over Poland, France and the Low Countries, Great Britain, the Balkans, and North Africa. By the time of "Operation Barbarossa" in June 1941, the Emil had been largely replaced as the Luftwaffe's main fighter aircraft by the new Bf 109 F; however, it continued in service in the fighter-bomber, reconnaissance, and fighter-training roles. The Bf 109 E was flown by all of Germany's famed early-war fighter aces, men such as Adolf Galland, Werner MÖlders, Helmut Wick, Wilhelm Balthasar, Walther Oesau, and countless others.

Book excerpt: A retired RAF Wing Commander examines the history of Germany’s favored fighter plane during the latter years of World War II. The most iconic German aircraft of the Second World War, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the Luftwaffe’s principal fighter from 1939 until 1942 when the superior Focke-Wulf Fw 190 came into greater prominence. The Bf 109 served in every theatre of the war, though in this book the author examines the Tip and Run era, D-Day, and the Eastern Front. In the later years of the war, the Bf 109 fought with some success in the defense of Germany against Allied bombers. The Bf 109 was the most produced fighter aircraft in history and more aerial kills were made with this fighter than any other aircraft. Indeed, A total of 105 Bf 109 pilots were each credited with the destruction of 100 or more enemy aircraft; thirteen of these men scored more than 200 kills, while two scored more than 300. The Bf 109 was flown by the three top-scoring fighter aces of the war: Erich Hartmann, Gerhard Barkhorn, and Günther Rall. All of them flew with JG 52, a unit which exclusively flew the Bf 109 and was credited with over 10,000 victories, chiefly on the Eastern Front. The Bf 109 was also supplied to several of Germany’s allies, including Finland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Slovakia. In this selection of unrivalled images collected over many years, the operations of this famous aircraft in the latter part of the Second World War are portrayed and brought to life

Book Messerschmitt Bf 109 A D series

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the nascent days of the Spanish Civil War to the desperate, final defence of the stricken Reich, the Messerchmitt Bf 109 was the Luftwaffe's signature fighter. From the very beginning of its combat career it came to symbolize what could be achieved with a modern monoplane fighter aircraft, instilling fear and respect into Allied pilots wherever it was encountered. 35,000 of the ubiquitous Messerschmitts were eventually built, making it the most-produced fighter in history. This is the first Air Vanguard volume to cover the Bf 109, detailing models A–D. Featuring stunning aerial photos the title explores in depth the technical characteristics and combat performance of the early Bf 109s, including their combat debut in the Spanish Civil War, their employment in the invasion of Poland and showing how the type became one of the most famous names in aviation history.

Book Messerschmitt BF 109 F K

Download or read book Messerschmitt BF 109 F K written by Willy Radinger and published by Schiffer Pub Limited. This book was released on 1999 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Luftwaffe's standard fighter, beginning in 1937 the Bf 109 was produced in large numbers and after the outbreak of the Second World War saw action over every front. With this light, high-performance aircraft Professor Willy Messerschmitt had created a ground-breaking design. The Bf 109 had to remain in continuous development in order to keep pace with advances in Allied fighter design. 1941 saw the advent of the Bf 109 F, a clearly improved version, which was soon replaced by the more powerful and better armed Bf 109 G. The Bf 109 H high-altitude fighter reached a ceiling of 14,000 meters, and the Bf 109 K, the most potent of all the variants of this fighter aircraft, entered production in the last year of the war. This is a complete summary of all versions from the Bf 109 F to K with many photographs, some never before published, and details.

Book excerpt: Innumerable books have been published on the two most famous fighter aircraft of all time, the Supermarine Spitfire and the Messerschmitt Bf109. But books setting out to tell the story of both aircraft are very much rarer - probably fewer than the fingers of one hand. Yet their joint story is one which bears retelling since both were essential to the air campaigns of World War Two.Incredibly, the men who designed them lacked any experience of designing a modern fighter. R J Mitchell had begun his career working on industrial steam locomotives, Willy Messerschmitt had cut his aeronautical teeth on light and fragile gliders and sporting planes. Yet both men not only managed to devise aircraft which could hold their own in a world where other designs went from state-of-the-art to obsolete in a staggeringly short time, but their fighters remained competitive over six years of front-line combat. Despite the different ways their creators approached their daunting tasks and the obstacles each faced in acceptance by the services for which they were designed, they proved to be so closely matched that neither side gained a decisive advantage in a titanic struggle. Had either of them not matched up to its opponent so well, then the air war would have been a one-sided catastrophe ending in a quick defeat for the Allies or the Axis powers, and the course of twentieth century history would have been changed beyond recognition.
