Book excerpt: Excerpt from Messer Marco Polo The message came to me, at the second check of the hunt, that a countryman and a clansman needed me. The ground was heavy, the day raw, and it was a drag, too fast for fun and too tame for sport. So I blessed the countryman and the clansman, and turned my back on the field. But when they told me his name, I all but fell from the saddle. "But that man's dead!" But he wasn't dead. He was in New York. He was traveling from the craigs of Ulster to his grandson, who had an orange-grove on the Indian River, in Florida. He wasn't dead. Book The Travels of Marco Polo Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Travels of Marco Polo Classic Reprint written by Hugh Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Travels of Marco Polo In the prosecution of this task, it soon appeared that there was room for much more than a mere reprint and access has been obtained to important materials, unknown to Mr Marsden, or any former British edi tor. The two versions recently edited by the French Society of Geography, and the early Italian ones by Count Baldelli Boni, are undoubtedly at once more copious and genuine than any before published. They prove that various difficulties, which embarrassed Mr Marsden, and shook the traveller's authority, arose only from the corrupted state of later copies. They contain also a considerable number of additional chapters and passages. By carefully collating them with early editions, and accredited manuscripts in the British Museum, it is hoped that a purer and more complete text has now been produced than any that has hitherto appeared in our language. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Ser Marco Polo, the Venetian, Vol. 1 of 2: Concerning the Kingdoms and Marvels of the East; Newly Translated and Edited, With Notes, Maps, and Other Illustrations I am painfully sensible that in regard to many subjects dealt with in the follow ing pages, nothing can make up for the want of genuine Oriental learning. A fair familiarity with Hindustani for many years, and some reminiscences 'of elementary Persian, have been useful in their degree but it is probable that they may sometimes also have led me astray, as such slender lights are apt to do. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Venetian adventurer Marco Polo traveled from Europe to Asia in the late thirteenth century, as immortalised in his seminal work of travel literature. It describes Polo’s assorted travels throughout Asia and his experiences in the sumptuous court of Kublai Khan. Composed at a time when very little was known about the Far East, Polo’s account opened new vistas to the European mind, allowing Western horizons to expand. His description of Japan set a definite goal for Christopher Columbus in his journey of 1492, while Polo’s detailed discoveries of spices encouraged Western merchants to seek new sources and break trading monopolies.
