Book excerpt: Building on collaborative work between the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute and the Lawrence Hall of Science, Messages from Space takes advantage of our fascination with extraterrestrials to catalyze study of the solar system and beyond. The activities create an exciting context for students to engage in creative learning, gaining a great deal of astronomical knowledge. The unit begins when students attempt to decode a fictitious message from outer space. Imagining that they are SETI scientists, students begin to analyze where, in the solar system and beyond, there may be conditions favorable for life. They investigate how our solar system and other planetary systems may have formed, and consider how what we know about the solar system fits into a bigger picture of the universe. Throughout, students consider whether life could exist out there and, if so, how we might communicate with those lifeforms. In doing so, students also gain valuable experience distinguishing science fact from sensationalized fiction. Messages from Space includes background information and diverse resources. Teachers do not need to have special knowledge of astronomy to present this unit successfully. All GEMS guides are thoroughly tested in classrooms nationwide and come complete with clear step-by-step instructions, assessment suggestions, literature connections, and ideas for further investigation.I must say that I enjoyed this unit more than any other GEMS unit I've used and so did my students. The underlying theme of the message held everyone's attention and was a useful hook to grasp onto throughout the unit. And the travel brochure and science fiction storiesprovided excellent opportunities for assessment.-Teacher, Alexandria, VirginiaI would strongly recommend these creative, interesting, and attention-grabbing activities. The book would also make a great organizer for a summer or after-school enrichment program at the elementary level.-NSTA RecommendsTABLE OF CONTENTS: Introduction Time Frame Activity 1: Message from Space Session 1: Making Contact Session 2: Interpreting a Message from Space Activity 2: Somewhere in the Milky WayC7S

Book Channeled Messages from Deep Space

Download or read book Channeled Messages from Deep Space written by Mike Dooley and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times best-selling author Mike Dooley, one of today's most celebrated New Thought leaders, holds a conversation with a collective of intelligent beings--channeled by Tracy Farquhar--to shed light on a new era of expanded awareness and limitless possibilities. How are we doing as a civilization? Why are societies so deeply divided? What happened to the many advanced cultures that preceded ours? Are there sentient beings visiting us from other planets, and if so, why haven't they made themselves known? Is there a God like the one we've been taught to believe in? And how far might spirituality take us, or does science hold the key to progress? We all ask questions like these not even expecting answers--but what if answers existed? Would we recognize the truth once uncovered? Enter Frank: a collective of eight beings from a distant planet who know what we're going through because they've been there too. Their civilization, once beset by many of the same challenges we face, has now advanced to a point where they can offer an informed and compassionate perspective on our trials, tribulations, and triumphs here on Earth. Speaking to Mike Dooley, one of today's most celebrated New Thought leaders, with medium Tracy Farquhar serving as their channel, Frank answers questions about: • Life on Brahoshka, from culture, technology, and education to leisure pursuits, food supply, relationships... • Pressing earthly matters, from our political and social realities to the truth behind the Loch Ness Monster • The power of imagination, meditation, concentrated thought, divination, and prayer • The truth concerning angels, other dimensions, and what we can do to make a better world

Book Extraterrestrial Languages

Download or read book Extraterrestrial Languages written by Daniel Oberhaus and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we send a message into space, will extraterrestrial beings receive it? Will they understand? The endlessly fascinating question of whether we are alone in the universe has always been accompanied by another, more complicated one: if there is extraterrestrial life, how would we communicate with it? In this book, Daniel Oberhaus leads readers on a quest for extraterrestrial communication. Exploring Earthlings' various attempts to reach out to non-Earthlings over the centuries, he poses some not entirely answerable questions: If we send a message into space, will extraterrestrial beings receive it? Will they understand? What languages will they (and we) speak? Is there not only a universal grammar (as Noam Chomsky has posited), but also a grammar of the universe? Oberhaus describes, among other things, a late-nineteenth-century idea to communicate with Martians via Morse code and mirrors; the emergence in the twentieth century of SETI (the search for extraterrestrial intelligence), CETI (communication with extraterrestrial intelligence), and finally METI (messaging extraterrestrial intelligence); the one-way space voyage of Ella, an artificial intelligence agent that can play cards, tell fortunes, and recite poetry; and the launching of a theremin concert for aliens. He considers media used in attempts at extraterrestrial communication, from microwave systems to plaques on spacecrafts to formal logic, and discusses attempts to formulate a language for our message, including the Astraglossa and two generations of Lincos (lingua cosmica). The chosen medium for interstellar communication reveals much about the technological sophistication of the civilization that sends it, Oberhaus observes, but even more interesting is the information embedded in the message itself. In Extraterrestrial Languages, he considers how philosophy, linguistics, mathematics, science, and art have informed the design or limited the effectiveness of our interstellar messaging.

Book Archaeology Anthropology and Interstellar Communication

Download or read book Archaeology Anthropology and Interstellar Communication written by National Aeronautics Administration and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-09-06 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing a field that has been dominated by astronomers, physicists, engineers, and computer scientists, the contributors to this collection raise questions that may have been overlooked by physical scientists about the ease of establishing meaningful communication with an extraterrestrial intelligence. These scholars are grappling with some of the enormous challenges that will face humanity if an information-rich signal emanating from another world is detected. By drawing on issues at the core of contemporary archaeology and anthropology, we can be much better prepared for contact with an extraterrestrial civilization, should that day ever come.

From Deep Space with Love gives readers the chance to listen in on a fascinating conversation between one of today’s most celebrated New Thought leaders—New York Times best-selling author Mike Dooley—and Frank, a collective of eight beings who currently live in a distant galaxy, channeled by Tracy Farquhar.

The book is divided into four parts: Life on Brahoska (Frank’s planet), Life on Earth, The Greater Universe, and Building a Better World. Topics include:

  • Brahoskans’ culture, relationships, technology, leisure, conception of time, and much more
  • Aspects of Earthly existence, from current political and social realities to the truth about the Loch Ness Monster
  • Angels, divination, other dimensions, and what we can do to make a better world, starting now

Drawing on the experiences and wisdom of Frank’s much older civilization and the trials and tribulations they have moved beyond—which once rivaled those we’re now undergoing on Earth—From Deep Space with Love is a compelling, irresistibly readable guide to a new era. Readers will find their awareness expanded and their beliefs stretching to encompass ideas that challenge the status quo and reveal the true limitless nature of the Universe—and of humanity itself.

Book excerpt: ** WINNER OF THE ENGLISH PEN WRITERS IN TRANSLATION AWARD ** **LONG-LISTED FOR THE 2013 FRANK O'CONNOR INTERNATIONAL SHORT STORY AWARD** **BOOK OF THE MONTH IN THE SKINNY** A soldier with the ability to predict the future finds himself blackmailed by an insurgent into the ultimate act of terror… A deviser of crosswords survives a car-bomb attack, only to discover he is now haunted by one of its victims… Fleeing a robbery, a Baghdad shopkeeper falls into a deep hole, at the bottom of which sits a djinni and the corpse of a soldier from a completely different war… From legends of the desert to horrors of the forest, Blasim’s stories blend the fantastic with the everyday, the surreal with the all-too-real. Taking his cues from Kafka, his prose shines a dazzling light into the dark absurdities of Iraq’s recent past and the torments of its countless refugees. The subject of this, his second collection, is primarily trauma and the curious strategies human beings adopt to process it (including, of course, fiction). The result is a masterclass in metaphor – a new kind of story-telling, forged in the crucible of war, and just as shocking. 'At first, you receive Blasim with the kind of shocked applause you’d award a fairly transgressive stand-up. You’re quite elated. Then you stop reading it at bedtime. At his best, Blasim produces a corrosive mixture of broken lyricism, bitter irony and hyper-realism which topples into the fantastic and the quotidian in the same reading moment.' – M John Harrison 'Perhaps the best writer of Arabic fiction alive...' – The Guardian. 'Bolaño-esque in its visceral exuberance, and also Borgesian in its gnomic complexity... a master of metaphor.' – The Guardian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Wolfe at his very best" (The New York Times Book Review), The Right Stuff is the basis for the 1983 Oscar Award-winning film of the same name and the 8-part Disney+ TV mini-series. From "America's nerviest journalist" (Newsweek)--a breath-taking epic, a magnificent adventure story, and an investigation into the true heroism and courage of the first Americans to conquer space. " Millions of words have poured forth about man's trip to the moon, but until now few people have had a sense of the most engrossing side of the adventure; namely, what went on in the minds of the astronauts themselves - in space, on the moon, and even during certain odysseys on earth. It is this, the inner life of the astronauts, that Tom Wolfe describes with his almost uncanny empathetic powers, that made The Right Stuff a classic.
