Book excerpt: An old elk hunter has set up an isolated camp in the Big Horn Mountains of northeastern Wyoming a week ahead of the opening of rifle season for a little quiet time before the rest of his family shows up. Alois, Ace, Gronsky and his dog Dozer are sucked into events that swirl around their idyllic setting, as teams of suspicious strangers set up three camps in separate locations in the vicinity. Not only are the strangers unfriendly, they are downright hostile to anyone snooping around. Little wonder; they plan to shoot down Air Force One on its way back from Jackson Wyoming. Five Jihadists are broken out of the new prison in nearby Wesley Montana and given the equipment they believe will shoot down the presidents plane. The jihadists are purposely set up for failure. Air Force One goes down. The home grown Wyoming Militia, with collusion from corrupt law enforcement, wipe out the Jihadists, and the government manipulated media tells the world that the POTUS (the President of the United States) and his family are dead while those responsible have been destroyed. Ace has rescued his kidnapped Indian friend from the Jihadists and they witness the shoot-down of Air Force One and two escort fighter jets. They also witness the deployment of the presidents escape pod and the pilot ejected from one of the fighters. If things were not bad enough already, Ace, his friend, Billy Black Stone, and fighter pilot Melanie, Yaz, Yasulevicz, must protect the first family from the teams bent on finishing the job, and battle winter conditions in the mountains of northern Wyoming. Despite the snow, things really heat up during the climax of this tale.

Book excerpt: It is September, 1940, and the Battle of Britain is not going well for the Germans. The RAF Spitfire, powered with a high performance carburetor made with platinum parts, is outperforming the Messerschmitt. Gold and platinum, smuggled out of the Andes in 1939 by a German elite force, lies at the bottom of the Caribbean Sea off Margarita Island. Retrieval of this strategic ore will allow the Germans to refit their fighters with a new ignition system and reverse their declining fortunes. Adolph Hitler himself authorizes a mission, code named Black Eagle, to recover the sunken gold and platinum from the sea bottom and return it to Germany. With the aid of the IRA and an Irish marine recovery vessel and specialists, the German mission, comprising an armed tender and two U-boats, play a game of blind mans bluff with British and American forces, the Germans intent on recovering the sunken cargo, the Allies intent on stopping it. Professor Jack Ford, a group of British commandoes and a patched-together Allied naval force of subs and surface craft are all that stand in the way of a successful German mission. The challenge on both sides is filled with twists of events making it uncertain who to trust and which way to turn. Anything is possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2018 Spur Award for Historical Novel A sweeping historical novel of the American West that follows the dramatic life of Daytime Smoke, Nez Perce son of explorer William Clark. The Coming is an epic novel of native-white relations in North America, intimately told through the life of Daytime Smoke--the real-life red-haired son of William Clark and a Nez Perce woman. In 1805, Lewis and Clark stumble out of the Rockies on the edge of starvation. The Nez Perce help the explorers build canoes and navigate the rapids of the Columbia, then spend two months hosting them the following spring before leading them back across the snowbound mountains. Daytime Smoke is born not long after, and the tribe of his youth continues a deep friendship with white Americans, from fur trappers to missionaries, even aiding the United States government in wars with neighboring tribes. But when gold is discovered on Nez Perce land in 1860, it sets an inevitable tragedy in motion. Daytime Smoke’s life spanned the seven decades between first contact and the last great Indian war. Capturing the trajectory experienced by so many native peoples--from friendship and cooperation to betrayal, war, and genocide--this sweeping novel, with its large cast of characters and vast geography, braids historical events with the drama of one man’s remarkable life. Rigorously researched and cinematically rendered, The Coming is a page-turning, heart-stopping American novel in a classic mode.

Book excerpt: Like an eagle, American colonists ascended from the gulley of British dependence to the position of sovereign world power in a period of merely two centuries. Seizing territory in Canada and representation in Britain; expelling the French, and even their British forefathers, American leaders George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson paved their nation’s way to independence. With the first buds of public relation techniques—of communication, dramatization, and propaganda—America flourished into a vision of freedom, of enterprise, and of unalienable human rights. In Flight of the Eagle, Conrad Black provides a perspective on American history that is unprecedented. Through his analysis of the strategic development of the United States from 1754-1992, Black describes nine “phases” of the strategic rise of the nation, in which it progressed through grave challenges, civil and foreign wars, and secured a place for itself under the title of “Superpower.” Black discredits prevailing notions that our unrivaled status is the product of good geography, demographics, and good luck. Instead, he reveals and analyzes the specific strategic decisions of great statesmen through the ages that transformed the world as we know it and established America’s place in it.

Book excerpt: Mixing prose and poetry, ancient traditions and modern sensibilities, this brilliant, profane, and poignant coming-of-age story is a masterpiece of Native American literature At a Thanksgiving party held in a Bureau of Indian Affairs gymnasium, the elders of the Meskwaki Settlement in central Iowa sip coffee while the teenagers plot their escape. Edgar Bearchild and Ted Facepaint, too broke to join their friends for a night of drinking in a nearby farm town, decide to attend a ceremonial gathering of the Well-Off Man Church, a tribal sect with hallucinogenic practices. After partaking of the congregation’s sacred star medicine, Edgar receives a prophetic vision and comes to a newfound understanding of his people’s past and present that will ultimately reshape the course of his life. Set against the backdrop of the tumultuous 1960s, Black Eagle Child is the story of Edgar’s passage from boyhood to manhood, from his youthful misadventures with Ted, to his year at prestigious liberal arts college in California, to his return to Iowa and success as a poet. Deftly crossing genre boundaries and weaving together a multitude of tones and images—from grief to humor, grape Jell-O to supernatural strobe lights—it is also an unforgettable portrait of what it means to be a Native American in the modern world.

Book excerpt: Barack Obama's politics are deeply informed by his profound knowledge and understanding of his country's history. His articles, books, and speeches are replete with references to America's past and how that relates to the present he sees and the future he envisions. Exploring Obama's own words, Steven Sarson examines his interpretation of American history from colonial times to the present, showing how Obama sees American history as beginning with the “common creed” of equality and liberty proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence and the “more perfect union” created by the Constitution. He analyses Obama's understanding of the colonies, revolution, and early nation, slavery and the civil war, segregation and civil rights, economy and society, Native Americans and foreign policy. An epilogue explores how Obama personifies the American dream through the stories of individuals, including his own. A unique and fascinating take on the past and how we interpret it, this book will appeal to all students and scholars of American history, as well as anyone interested in Obama's presidency.

Book excerpt: The town of Black Eagle, Oregon sits on the banks of the Columbia River at the foot of snow covered Mt. Hood. It is home to church going citizens, windsurfers and orchard workers. But when real estate prices start to boom, an influx of newcomers arrive and the cultural divide between Whites, Natives, and Hispanic workers create tensions that brew just below the surface in this pretty Pacific Northwest town. Based on real events in the early 1990s, this fast paced novel reveals how the lives of four very different Black Eagle characters intertwine when a fishing platform is deliberately destroyed at an ancient Native site. Richard Sherwood is the real estate developer from Back East who has arrived in Black Eagle to make his fortune, who will stop at nothing to reach his goal of becoming a millionaire before he's forty. Jim Hawks is the Native who lives a quiet life on the river with his grandfather, but ever since college harbors deep political unrest that he doesn't know what to do with. Tawny is the church going wife who thought her life would remain perfect when she "married up" to Charles Spotts, but taking care of her new house and two teen-age sons can't contain her restlessness. And Anna Kingston, the single woman who changed her life from Boston businesswoman to Black Eagle high school teacher, struggles with more than she bargained for in her new life. The protest against the Richard Sherwood's real estate development turns into a full-time encampment -including tipis and a sacred flame and each character his forced to deal with the unfolding events in their own way.
