Book Toxicology in the Use Misuse and Abuse of Food Drugs and Chemicals

Download or read book Toxicology in the Use Misuse and Abuse of Food Drugs and Chemicals written by European Society of Toxicology. Meeting and published by Springer. This book was released on 1983-08 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many chemotherapeutic agents introduced for use in humans are carcinogenic in laboratory animals (Conklin et al. 1965; Shimkin et al. 1966; Griswold et al. 1968; Harris 1976). However, initially their beneficial effect in disseminated cancer was of such short duration that the inevitable death of the patient from his primary disease precluded any clinical manifestation of the carcinogenic potential. During the last decade, chemotherapy has radically changed the outlook for many patients with cancer. Combinations of drugs, administered as the primary treatment, have resulted in high rates of cure in patients with disseminated malignancies, such as stage IV Hodgkin's disease or childhood acute lymphocytic leukemia. In other disseminated forms of neoplasia, induction of a remission, a substantial palliation and a prolongation of survival have been achieved. In many instances of localised disease, where surgery with or without radiotherapy are the primary form of treatment, anticancer drugs have been used with success as adjuvant therapy for distant microscopic disease. With these spectacular achievements, secondary malignancies, in particular acute non-lymphocytic leukemia (ANLL), has become of major concern. Incidence Acute leukemia is the most frequent form of secondary neoplasia in patients treated for cancer (Penn 1981). In one large series, 5. 9% of all ANLL could be attributed to previous chemotherapy (Kapadia et al. 1980).

Book Manual of Diagnostic Ultrasound

Download or read book Manual of Diagnostic Ultrasound written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2011 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forlagets beskrivelse: The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes ultrasound as an important medical diagnostic imaging technology. Manuals on ultrasound have been published by WHO since 2001, with the purpose of guiding health professionals on the safe and effective use of ultrasound. Among the diagnostic imaging technologies, ultrasound is the safer and least expensive, and technological advances are making it more user friendly and portable. Ultrasound has many uses, both diagnostic and therapeutic. For the purposes of this manual, only diagnostic ultrasound will be considered and further analysed. Basic physics of ultrasonographic imaging was released in 2005; since then, WHO has addressed the physics, safe use and different applications of ultrasound as an important diagnostic imaging tool. Since it is a non ionizing radiation technology, along with nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, the risks inherent to its use are lower than those presented by other diagnostic imaging technologies using ionizing radiation, such as the radiological technologies (X-rays and computed tomography scanners).

This textbook/atlas is designed to present a comprehensive and state of the art approach to the cytologic diagnosis and reporting of pancreaticobiliary lesions. Chapters address each of the diagnostic categories defined by the P.S.C. The definition of each category along with the clinical pathologic entities contained within the category are discussed along with specific cytologic criteria for inclusion of a cytologic specimen within the category. Each chapter is lavishly illustrated demonstrating diagnostic criteria and examples of lesions contained within the category. Additionally, appropriate ancillary testing is discussed and where appropriate illustrated. Each chapter concludes with a discussion of appropriate management as well as estimates of malignancy risk for the category. The Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology System for Reporting Pancreaticobiliary Cytology: Definitions, Criteria, Ancillary Testing and Management will provide the reader with a unified approach to diagnosing and reporting interpretations of cytologic specimens obtained from the pancreaticobiliary tract. This text/atlas will serve as a reference guide for pathologists, surgeons, endoscopists and radiologists.

Book Radon in Ground Water

Download or read book Radon in Ground Water written by National Water Well Assoc. and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book focuses on sampling and analysis, radon and radium in water supply wells, predictive models, geologic and hydrogeologic controls that influence radon occurrence, monitoring radon and other radioactivity from geologic sources and mining impacts on occurrence of radioactivity in ground water. Also discussed are occurrence, testing, treatment, and reduction of radon from groundwater. Because the most severe health hazard from indoor radioactivity results from inhalation of short-lived radioactive decay products of radon, the EPA scheduled a major conference early in 1987 on Radon, Radium, and Other Radioactivity in Ground Water-Hydrogeologic Impact and Application to Indoor Airborne Contamination. The result is this book.
