Book Mesoporous Manganese Oxide Materials for Aerobic Oxidation Reactions

Download or read book Mesoporous Manganese Oxide Materials for Aerobic Oxidation Reactions written by Sourav Biswas and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis presented here is focused on fabricating thermally stable and tunable mesoporous manganese oxide materials for catalytic aerobic oxidation reactions. From the viewpoint of green chemistry, the design of novel methodologies for oxidation, preferably under aerobic atmospheric condition, without any additives is highly desirable. Being motivated by advances in catalytic materials as fundamental pillars of â€green chemistry’, my research is devoted to designing of useful materials in oxidative catalysis that may serve the purpose of sustainable energy sources in harmony with the environment and nature. The five chapters provided here will discuss the importance of catalytic oxidation reactions, synthesis, and characterization of the mesoporous manganese oxide materials and their applications in a series of simple to complex oxidation reactions. We demonstrate the activity enhancement of mesoporous manganese oxide materials by introducing alkali metal ions in a simple alcohol oxidation reaction. The major achievement of this work is inventing a cesium ion promoted mesoporous manganese oxide, which was found to be active in a multitude of aerobic oxidation reactions. In terms of catalytic oxidation reactions, oxidation of alcohol to aldehydes, amines to imines, a versatile one –pot tandem oxidation processes and oxidative coupling of alkynes have been discussed. Moreover, mechanistic aspects of catalytic oxidation are studied in details, especially the role of the surface oxygen species, oxygen vacancies and related oxygen transportation of the metal oxides. The catalytic oxidation protocols discussed here have several advantages over the existing systems in addressing the goals of green chemistry. First, the heterogeneous nature of the catalyst provides ease of separation of product. Next, excellent reusability of the catalyst (as high as 8 cycles) and formation of water as the only by-product (in most of the cases) reduces toxic waste production. Finally, absence of additives and use of air as the terminal oxidant exemplify the greener, more efficient and less expensive nature of these processes.

Book Understanding Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Transition Metal Oxide Catalytic Systems for Partial Oxidation Reactions

Download or read book Understanding Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Transition Metal Oxide Catalytic Systems for Partial Oxidation Reactions written by Ehsan Moharreri and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transition metal oxide-based systems as catalysts for oxidative reactions are studied. Utilizing aerobic oxygen as a cost-efficient and benign oxidant is explored for alcohol oxidation reactions. A detailed magnetic study is performed to understand the active phases of manganese oxide catalysts. The role of a well-known homogeneous copper oxide catalyst in an oxidation reaction is explored for making alcohols from aliphatic hydrocarbons. Finally, virtual screening techniques are explored in a preliminary study for materials discovery. In chapter I, aerobic transformation of alcohols is studied by mesoporous manganese oxide and cobalt oxide species. Catalyst optimization, characterization and substrate scope experimentation is performed for self-esterification of alcohols and aldehydes. In chapter II, a comprehensive magnetic characterization of mesoporous manganese oxide species is provided. While conventional methods do not lead to definitive phase determination, magnetic transitions and spin eco NMR techniques prove the mixed phase of meso MnOx materials. In chapter III, a synthetic copper complex is studied. The complex was modeled after the active site of particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO). A detailed study of the complex structure, reaction medium and by- products showed that an important side reaction interfered with hydrocarbon oxidation. The nitrile solvent decomposes to amide by nucleophilic interactions from hydrogen peroxide. In the final chapter, preliminary computational screening tools are introduced. Extraction of geometrical features of molecular structures and evaluation of total energy with machine learning algorithms are performed and the ground work for application of such work to crystalline materials is proposed.

Book The Development and Mechanistic Investigations of Various Catalytic Processes by Mesoporous Metal Oxides and Sulfides

Download or read book The Development and Mechanistic Investigations of Various Catalytic Processes by Mesoporous Metal Oxides and Sulfides written by Biswanath Dutta and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis includes five chapters. The 1st Chapter provides a brief introduction of mesoporous materials and heterogeneous catalysis. Chapter 2 describes the coupling of anilines to azo dyes in the presence of mesoporous manganese oxide materials. In Chapter 3 an extension of the applicability of mesoporous manganese oxide catalysts to cross dehydrogenative coupling of N-Aryltetrahydroisoquinolines (sp3 C-H) with indoles (sp2 C-H) is discussed. Moreover, in Chapter 4 the applicability of mesoporous cobalt sulfoselenide system was studied for producing hydrogen from water under electro-catalytic conditions. Finally, in Chapter 5, the future perspectives of the development of mesoporous materials has been discussed to extend their applicability to performing complicated chemical reactions. Since the past few decades, intense research is ongoing for development of alternatives to fossil fuels and petroleum products. To curb the menace of global warming, the development of green chemical pathways is also a recent focus. These green chemical methodologies are intended to repel traditional pathways that often involve the use or production of toxic elements, environmentally unfriendly protocols, and non-reusable techniques. Therefore, to develop green chemical pathways for reactions, systems are designed using earth-abundant but non-toxic elements. Moreover, these reusable protocols are preferred to be operable under atmospheric conditions, and without any additives. These fundamentals of 'green chemistry', interested me in understanding the surface chemistry and further the applications of mesoporous metal oxides and sulfides such as manganese oxides and cobalt sulfides. In this thesis, the importance of different catalytic processes, their operational procedures, and fundamental details have been depicted. We have identified the active sites responsible for the excellent activity of reported transformations. Detailed investigation of the surface chemistry of these heterogeneous catalytic processes is expected to facilitate the understanding and further the advancement of rather complicated procedures. Computational calculations were performed in all cases to support our experimental findings. These non-toxic, additive free catalytic protocols discussed here showed excellent reusability and environmentally benign waste (water) generation, which abides by the rules of Green Chemistry.

Book Development of Manganese Oxide Based Catalysts for the Oxygen Reduction and Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Download or read book Development of Manganese Oxide Based Catalysts for the Oxygen Reduction and Oxygen Evolution Reactions written by Yelena Gorlin and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of active catalytic materials for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR, O2 + 4H+ + 4e- 2!2H2O) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER, 2H2O 2!O2 + 4H+ + 4e- ) is one of the major challenges in energy conversion and storage technologies such as fuel cells, metal-air batteries, electrolysis cells, and solar fuel synthesis. The majority of industrially relevant active materials are precious metals and metal oxides, whose high cost and scarcity limits the widespread adoption of these important technologies. Manganese oxides (MnOx) catalysts are an interesting alternative to the precious metal based electrodes under alkaline conditions due to their abundance, low cost, and a demonstrated ability to catalyze both the ORR and the OER at high pH values. To accelerate the development of MnOx catalysts with improved activities for the ORR and the OER, it is important to increase understanding of the surface properties at the ORR and the OER relevant potentials. Spectroscopy techniques, including x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), are among the possible methods to monitor surface chemistry of catalytic materials. Both XPS and XAS can offer information on the electronic structure of the surface, while XAS can also probe the short-range order of the catalysts. This dissertation focuses on development of MnOx catalysts for the ORR and the OER and uses ex-situ XPS, ex-situ Mn L-edge XAS, and in-situ Mn K-edge XAS to correlate measured catalytic activity to the surface oxidation state of Mn.

Book Creative Complex Systems

Download or read book Creative Complex Systems written by Kazuo Nishimura and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, problems such as environmental and economic crises and pandemics caused by new viruses have been occurring on a global scale. Globalization brings about benefits, but it can increase the potential risks of “systemic problems”, leading to system-wide disruptions. The coronavirus pandemic, declared on March 11, 2020, by the World Health Organization, has revealed social disparities in the form of a higher risk of death for people of low-socioeconomic status and has caused massive destruction of the economy and of globalization itself. Extensive efforts to cope with these challenges have often led to the emergence of additional problems due to the chain of hidden causation. What can be done to protect against such emerging challenges? Despite the resulting complexity, once these individual problems are considered as different aspects of a single whole, seemingly contradictory issues can become totally understandable, as they can be integrated into a single coherent framework. This is the integrationist approach in contrast to the reductionist approach. Situations of this kind are truly relevant to understanding the question, “What are creative complex systems?” This book features contributions by members and colleagues of the Kyoto University International Research Unit of Integrated Complex System Science. It broadens our outlook from the traditional view of stability, in which global situations are eventually stabilized after the impact of destruction, to “creative” complex systems.
