Download or read book Coastal Meteorology written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-02-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost half the U.S. population lives along the coast. In another 20 years this population is expected to more than double in size. The unique weather and climate of the coastal zone, circulating pollutants, altering storms, changing temperature, and moving coastal currents affect air pollution and disaster preparedness, ocean pollution, and safeguarding near-shore ecosystems. Activities in commerce, industry, transportation, freshwater supply, safety, recreation, and national defense also are affected. The research community engaged in studies of coastal meteorology in recent years has made significant advancements in describing and predicting atmospheric properties along coasts. Coastal Meteorology reviews this progress and recommends research that would increase the value and application of what is known today.

Book Mesoscale Convective Processes in the Atmosphere

Download or read book Mesoscale Convective Processes in the Atmosphere written by Robert J. Trapp and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new textbook seeks to promote a deep yet accessible understanding of mesoscale-convective processes in the atmosphere. Mesoscale-convective processes are commonly manifested in the form of thunderstorms, which are fast evolving, inherently hazardous, and can assume a broad range of sizes and severity. Modern explanations of the convective-storm dynamics, and of the related development of tornadoes, damaging 'straight-line' winds and heavy rainfall, are provided. Students and weather professionals will benefit especially from unique chapters devoted to observations and measurements of mesoscale phenomena, mesoscale prediction and predictability, and dynamical feedbacks between mesoscale-convective processes and larger-scale motions.

Book Mesoscale Feedback from the Ocean to the Atmosphere in Coastal and Oceanic Frontal Regions

Download or read book Mesoscale Feedback from the Ocean to the Atmosphere in Coastal and Oceanic Frontal Regions written by Taivo Laevastu and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study has been: (a) To investigate the processes involved in the mesoscale feedback process and effects of the feedback on the lower layers of the atmosphere; (b) to investigate the response of surface air to sea-surface properties; (c) to determine the 'range of the coastal influence' and the effects of coastal fronts on the surface layers in the atmosphere; (d) to investigate the possibility of recognizing oceanic frontal effects with routine ship observations; and (e) to look into the accounting of feedback in numerical models.

Book Mesoscale Coupled Ocean atmosphere Interaction

Download or read book Mesoscale Coupled Ocean atmosphere Interaction written by Hyodae Seo and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extending SCOAR to the tropical Atlantic TIWs shows that air-sea coupling damps the eddy kinetic energy of the waves. TIW-induced wind stress is negatively correlated with the TIW-induced ocean surface current, and this slows down the TIW-currents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this project are (1) to determine the extent of coastal influence in various meteorological conditions including the determination of the speed of response to the properties of surface air to the properties of the sea surface; (2) to determine the effect of the feedback of energy from the oceans on the atmosphere and describe and quantitatively formulate the mesoscale processes on the atmosphere in coastal regions; and (3) to determine how to use coastal meteorological and oceanographic observations for the analysis and prediction of coastal weather and the extent of oceanic conditions and anomalies offshore through the projection of coastal observations to offshore areas. Book Coastal and Marine Environments

Download or read book Coastal and Marine Environments written by José Simão Antunes Do Carmo and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systematizes the concepts of contemporary coastal zone management and suggests possible structural and non-structural management tools for decision-making processes. Some successful adaptation measures and case studies on oceanic processes and coastal protection are discussed. High-frequency communications in coastal and marine environments are also addressed. All chapters contribute relevant information and useful content to scientists and other readers interested or concerned about the lack of adequate management actions and the installation of appropriate protections or their ineffectiveness in containing coastal vulnerabilities and risks.

Book Megacities and the Coast

Download or read book Megacities and the Coast written by Mark Pelling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a major international study, this volume provides a synthesis of scientific knowledge on megacity urbanization on the coast, environmental impacts, risks and management choices, including a focus on adaptation, mitigation and disaster risk management. It is the primary output of a major international scientific project sponsored by the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme, the Land-Ocean Interactions at the Coastal Zone programme of IHDP/IGBP, and others. It brings together the work of over 60 contributing authors and an international review board. It presents the international policy and academic community with an unbiased and high quality assessment of the state-of-the art in areas of social-ecological systems interaction. One of its main messages is that while we know a great deal about megacities of more than ten million people and about urban processes, and about coasts and their physical and ecological processes (aquatic, physical and atmospheric), there is relatively little work that focusses primarily at points of intersection between large-scale urbanization and the coast. The book responds to this gap by providing the first global synthesis of megacity and large urban region urbanization on the coast. Its focus is on environmental and development challenges, climate change and disaster. It is interdisciplinary and brings together world recognised scientists (including many IPCC lead authors) on urban climate and atmosphere, disaster risk management, demography and coastal environments.
