Unfortunately, inverse rendering is an ill-posed problem that is difficult to optimize. In this paper, we explore using a differentiable renderer to solve inverse rendering problems that are constrained to a single object with two unknowns: shape and texture. The inferred 3D scene is thus a single 3D model. We iteratively optimize an input "guess" 3D model to fit a set of input target images of the desired 3D object. The constrained inverse rendering problem remains ill-posed. So, we adapt, develop, and evaluate a number of deformation, regularization, and training techniques that allow the optimization to converge to visually appealing output 3D models. The system consumes a 3D triangle mesh and target images as input. It outputs a 3D mesh and its corresponding 2D texture image that can easily be consumed by other programs. The best results are achieved using a deep-mesh prior neural network, an Image Pyramid coarse-to-fine loss function, a Silhouette Loss function that is robust to inaccuracies in texture, three separate mesh regularizing loss functions – Laplacian, Flatness, and Non-Uniformity, and periodic refinement operations where the output mesh is upsampled and its manifold is recomputed.

However, because many different 3D shapes can have virtually the same projection, such monocular shape recovery is inherently ambiguous. In this survey, we will review the two main classes of techniques that have proved most effective so far: The template-based methods that rely on establishing correspondences with a reference image in which the shape is already known, and non-rigid structure-from-motion techniques that exploit points tracked across the sequences to reconstruct a completely unknown shape. In both cases, we will formalize the approach, discuss its inherent ambiguities, and present the practical solutions that have been proposed to resolve them. To conclude, we will suggest directions for future research. In particular, the 3D information is obtained from images for which the camera parameters are unknown. The principles underlying such uncalibrated structure-from-motion methods are outlined. First, a short review of 3D acquisition technologies puts such methods in a wider context, and highlights their important advantages. Then, the actual theory behind this line of research is given. The authors have tried to keep the text maximally self-contained, therefore also avoiding to rely on an extensive knowledge of the projective concepts that usually appear in texts about self-calibration 3D methods. Rather, mathematical explanations that are more amenable to intuition are given. The explanation of the theory includes the stratification of reconstructions obtained from image pairs as well as metric reconstruction on the basis of more than 2 images combined with some additional knowledge about the cameras used. Readers who want to obtain more practical information about how to implement such uncalibrated structure-from-motion pipelines may be interested in two more Foundations and Trends issues written by the same authors. Together with this issue they can be read as a single tutorial on the subject.

The field has gained popularity very rapidly during the last decade. This is partly due to the many application areas of computational geometry and partly due to the beauty of the field itself. This monograph focuses on three problems that arise in three-dimensional computational geometry. The first problem is the ray shooting problem: preprocess a set of polyhedra into a data structure such that the first polyhedron that is hit by a query ray can be determined quickly. The second problem is that of computing depth orders: we want to sort a set of polyhedra such thatif one polyhedron is (partially) obscured by another polyhedron then it comes first in the order. The third problem is the hidden surface removal problem: given a set of polyhedra and a view point, compute which parts of the polyhedra are visible from the view point. These three problems involve issues that are fundamental to three-dimensional computational geometry. The book also contains a large introductory part discussing the techniques used to tackle the problems. This part should interest not only those who need the background for the rest of the book but also anyone who wants to know more about some recent techniques in computational geometry.
