In about 1920, he began constructing the Merzbau, a combination of collage, sculpture and architecture, which emerged in a corner of his studio and eventually took over many parts of the house in Hannover. Schwitters slowly turned his Merz-works into a sculptural architectonic space that widened to almost all the rooms of the house and even the cellar and the balcony. This was the time, when he first called his whole art Merz, in order to separate it from anything else and to form a new idea of art. The Merzbau was a complex formation of requisites linked to his bibliography but also to the contemporary world affairs as well as to German history, artists and thinkers, he considered to be worth getting a little memorial. A majority of the souvenir collection formed little niches, dedicated to his friends. The Merzbau was a very intimate and private construction. It had to be very bound to himself and his memories, because he actually lived there. The construction is often described as "grottoesque", impressive and full of little souvenirs. Over the years it was always changing and shifting, the different names that Schwitters gave it are very often mixed up with mere elements of the Merzbau but only because he himself never made clear which name referred to which piece. This essay is primarily concerned with a deeper investigation of the various aspects of memory within the Merzbau, than has been made hitherto. It wants to point at the different concepts of memory, incorporated in Merz. Furthermore, I want to point to the several important concepts of memory, one can relate to the Merzbau, which are either produced by the construction itself or by people that deal with it. Book excerpt: Theories of the domestic stemming from the 19th century have focused on the home as a refuge and place of repose for the family, a nurturing environment for children and a safe place for visitors. Under this conception, domestic space is positioned as nurturing and private, a refuge and place of retreat which gave rise to theories of 'home as haven'. While, arguably, some social conditions might suggest this is the case, Domesticity Under Siege exposes a different world, one in which the boundaries of nurturing domesticity collide with both outside and inside agents. Whether these agents are external military forces, psychological trauma or familial violence, they re-position meta-narratives of domesticity, not through identity politics or specialized subgroup experience, but relative to the actions of the world around an inhabited domain. That is, when home is constituted as a private realm, a place where individuals or groups can reside in 'safety and comfort', it is argued as a place in which the individual exercises control or power. However, there are many occasions when forces act upon the home and threaten aspects of safety and comfort, often through such things as ruination, violence, mortality, and infestation. Organised around four thematic sections, 'Microbes, Animals and Insects', 'Human Agents', Wars and Disasters as Agents' and 'Hauntings, Eeriness and the Uncanny', chapters provide a range of approaches to the home which challenge notions of 'haven' and reflect major causes that have played an important role in undermining the modern home. Examples and case studies explore the domestic screen, hoarding, hauntings, violence and imprisonment in the home, wartime interior art, the Hanover Merzbau and Wolfgang Staudte's 1946 film Die Mörder sind unter uns ('The Murderers are Among Us').

This book traces the influence of collective memory in international relations (IR). It locates the origins of a country's memory within the international environment and inquires how memory guides states through time in world politics. Collective memory, as such, not only shapes countries and their international interactions, but the international sphere also plays an essential role in how countries approach the past. Through in-depth examinations of both domestic and international landscapes in empirical cases, the book explores four ways in which collective memory can manifest in IR: as a country's political strategy; as its public identity; as its international state behaviour; and finally, as a source for its national values. A comparative case study of (West) Germany and Austria illustrates how significantly differing interpretations of the Nazi legacy impacted their respective international policies over time. Taken together, this book investigates whether collective memory influences global outcomes and how and why it matters for IR.
