Book Highly Committed

Download or read book Highly Committed written by DeWitt S. Williams and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important legacy a person can leave behind is reflected in the lives they touch for Christ during their lifetime. After serving the Seventh-day Adventist Church for more than 100 years in different capacities, the Wilson family has left quite a legacy that continues on today. The legacy began when William Henry Wilson gave his heart to the Lord after hearing Ellen White preach at a camp meeting in California. Although his time on earth was short, he dedicated himself to studying God's word, and before he passed away, he asked his sons to promise him that they would commit their lives to serving the church. Nathaniel Wilson gave his word that he would serve the Lord, and he did so in a mighty way, working in various conferences in the States and serving overseas in Africa, Asia, Australia, and India. Neal C. Wilson carried his father's legacy forward and served in the Middle East and North America before accepting the call to lead the world church. Along the way, Neal mentored his son, Ted N. C. Wilson, who followed in his father's footsteps and ministered in Africa, Russia, and currently at the General Conference as president of the Adventist Church. Four generations of Wilsons, along with their wives and families, have stood firm in their commitment to God and their church. Highly Committed traces the history of the Wilson family from William Henry and Isabella Wilson through Ted N. C. and Nancy Wilson. Their family's story is one of providential guidance and unwavering commitment. May you be blessed as you read the story of this God-fearing family, and may you be inspired to commit your life to following God and making a difference for the kingdom!

Book Heralds of the King

Download or read book Heralds of the King written by Edmund P. Clowney and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2009 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleven preachers with different gifts, backgrounds, and personal emphases show how they proclaim Christ from all the Scripture in a variety of contexts. Edmund P. Clowney (1917-2005), the late president and professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, was a trailblazer of Christ-centered, redemptive-historical preaching. Through his classroom instruction, his publications, and his example as a preacher, he ignited in many seminary students and pastors a passion to preach Christ from all the Scriptures as the fulfillment and climax of God's plan of redemption. This collection of sermons is intended to illustrate how various preachers with different gifts, backgrounds, and personal emphases are working out in practice the homiletic principles they learned from Dr. Clowney. The volume, which includes sermons and introductory comments by editor Dennis Johnson, Tim Keller, Joseph "Skip" Ryan, and eight other contributors, enables readers to carry away both models and practical advice for preparing sermons that proclaim Christ across a broad spectrum of congregations and people groups.

Book Florence Foster Jenkins

Download or read book Florence Foster Jenkins written by Nicholas Martin and published by St. Martin's Griffin. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the true story of Florence Foster Jenkins—now the basis of a major motion picture starring Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep! She was a woman with a dream. Nobody believed in her talent. But nothing could stop her. . . She had no pitch, no rhythm, and no tone. Still, Florence Foster Jenkins (Streep) became one of America’s best-known sopranos. Born in 1868, Florence was a talented young pianist whose wealthy father refused to let her continue her musical studies in Europe. In retaliation, Florence eloped with Dr. Frank Jenkins, a man twice her age, and moved to New York. But when her father died and left her a large sum of money, Florence finally had a chance to pursue her one true passion: Singing. But first she would have to learn how to become a great singer. Years of lessons and a chance meeting with St. Clair Bayfield (Hugh Grant), who would become her manager and common-law husband, would help launch Florence’s career and entry into New York’s prestigious classical musical societies, culminating in her giving a recital, at the age of seventy-six, at Carnegie Hall. This is story of a woman who was not afraid to recreate herself into the person she wished to become—and achieve her own version of the American Dream.

Book Veiled Desires

    Book Details:
  • Author : Maureen Sabine
  • Publisher : Fordham Univ Press
  • Release : 2013-08
  • ISBN : 0823251659
  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book Veiled Desires written by Maureen Sabine and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ingrid Bergman's engaging screen performance as Sister Mary Benedict in The Bells of St. Mary's made the film nun a star and her character a shining standard of comparison. She represented the religious life as the happy and rewarding choice of a modern woman who had a "complete understanding" of both erotic and spiritual desire. How did this vibrant and mature nun figure come to be viewed as girlish and naive? Why have she and her cinematic sisters in postwar popular film so often been stereotyped or selectively analyzed, so seldom been seen as women and religious? In Veiled Desires--a unique full-length, in-depth study of nuns in film--Maureen Sabine explores these questions in a groundbreaking interdisciplinary study covering more than sixty years of cinema. She looks at an impressive breadth of films in which the nun features as an ardent lead character, including The Bells of St. Mary's (1945), Black Narcissus (1947), Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison (1957), Sea Wife (1957), The Nun's Story (1959), The Sound of Music (1965), Change of Habit (1969), In This House of Brede (1975), Agnes of God (1985), Dead Man Walking (1995), and Doubt (2008). Veiled Desires considers how the beautiful and charismatic stars who play chaste nuns, from Ingrid Bergman and Audrey Hepburn to Susan Sarandon and Meryl Streep, call attention to desires that the veil concealed and the habit was thought to stifle. In a theologically and psychoanalytically informed argument, Sabine responds to the critics who have pigeonholed the film nun as the obedient daughter and religious handmaiden of a patriarchal church, and the respectful audience who revered her as an icon of spiritual perfection. She provides a framework for a more complex and holistic picture of nuns on screen by showing how the films dramatize these women's Christian call to serve, sacrifice, and dedicate themselves to God, and their erotic desire for intimacy, agency, achievement, and fulfillment.

Book White Narratives

Download or read book White Narratives written by Manase, Irikidzayi and published by NISC (Pty) Ltd. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post-2000 period in Zimbabwe saw the launch of a fast track land reform programme, resulting in a flurry of accounts from white Zimbabweans about how they saw the land, the land invasions, and their own sense of belonging and identity. In White Narratives, Irikidzayi Manase engages with this fervent output of texts seeking definition of experiences, conflicts and ambiguities arising from the land invasions. He takes us through his study of texts selected from the memoirs, fictional and non-fictional accounts of white farmers and other displaced white narrators on the post-2000 Zimbabwe land invasions, scrutinising divisions between white and black in terms of both current and historical ideology, society and spatial relationships. He examines how the revisionist politics of the Zimbabwean government influenced the politics of identities and race categories during the period 2000–2008, and posits some solutions to the contestations for land and belonging.

Book excerpt: Looking at two salient characteristics of our current environment -- the declining influence of political parties; the communication revolution via the internet, social media, and cable television; and the impact of money -- this book asks whether our now-fully democratized presidential selection process has diminished the quality of our presidential candidates and the campaigns they run, whether the turn to demagoguery that the Founders feared has materialized, what the consequences of our presidential selection process have been for American government, and whether it would be valuable to rethink our wholehearted commitment to popular election of the President.
