Book Drink and be Merry

Download or read book Drink and be Merry written by Mikhal Dayagi-Mendeles and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wine and beer are an integral part of the socio-cultural landscape from the most sacred rituals to everyday use. Drink and Be Merry: Wine and Beer in Ancient Times, on view at The Jewish Museum from July 30 to November 5, 2000, presents 5,000 years of drinking culture in the eastern Mediterranean and Near East through an exhibition of over 180 objects including art, artifacts and paraphernalia of the trade. Organized by the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, this exhibition explores two of the oldest known beverages, valued throughout time for their abilities to lift spirits, inspire religious fervor, deaden pain and cure illness. It examines the subject of wine and beer in antiquity from methods of production to drinking customs and presents the central role of these two beverages in religious and secular contexts, on special occasions and in everyday use. Drink and Be Merry focuses on the wine regions of Rome, Greece and Israel and the grain-rich lands of Mesopotamia and Egypt, from the fourth millennium BCE until the decline in the consumption of alcoholic beverages with the spread of Islam in the seventh century CE. Drink and Be Merry: Wine and Beer in Ancient Times is sponsored by Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Inc. with support from other generous funders. Objects on view are being lent by major museums and private collections in Israel, the United States, Germany, and the Netherlands. The majority of the objects are loaned courtesy of the Israel Museum and the Israel Antiquities Authority.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Mallory Ortberg comes a collection of darkly mischievous stories based on classic fairy tales. Adapted from the beloved "Children's Stories Made Horrific" series, "The Merry Spinster" takes up the trademark wit that endeared Ortberg to readers of both The Toast and the best-selling debut Texts From Jane Eyre. The feature has become among the most popular on the site, with each entry bringing in tens of thousands of views, as the stories proved a perfect vehicle for Ortberg's eye for deconstruction and destabilization. Sinister and inviting, familiar and alien all at the same time, The Merry Spinster updates traditional children's stories and fairy tales with elements of psychological horror, emotional clarity, and a keen sense of feminist mischief. Readers of The Toast will instantly recognize Ortberg's boisterous good humor and uber-nerd swagger: those new to Ortberg's oeuvre will delight in this collection's unique spin on fiction, where something a bit mischievous and unsettling is always at work just beneath the surface. Unfalteringly faithful to its beloved source material, The Merry Spinster also illuminates the unsuspected, and frequently, alarming emotional complexities at play in the stories we tell ourselves, and each other, as we tuck ourselves in for the night. Bed time will never be the same.

Book Anything But Merry

Download or read book Anything But Merry written by David Slattery-Christy and published by . This book was released on 2008-01-18 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the extraordinary life of one of Edwardian England's most celebrated and revered musical comedy stars, Lily Elsie. From her childhood days in the music halls of Salford and her rise to fame as the child singing star "Little Elsie" (hailed by press and public as "the infant Patti," after the world famous opera star Adelina Patti) to her arrival in London as a young woman. Her association with the most powerful theatre impresario of the time, George Edwardes, the father of the musical comedy genre, with his innovative and lavish productions at The Gaiety and Daly's Theatre. Her friends included Gertie Millar, the most powerful and luminous of the "Gaiety Girls." Elsie's rise to fame as Sonia in Lehar's The Merry Widow in 1907, produced by Edwardes at Daly's Theatre, was achieved in spite of her lack of confidence and overwhelming stage fright that would leave her sick with nervous exhaustion and cause the press to accuse her of being "a part time actress" when she missed performances. Her image would endorse everything from toothpaste to face creams; the costumes and hats she wore for The Merry Widow were emulated everywhere. Retiring from the stage in 1911 to marry a handsome and wealthy husband, she enjoyed a brief period of domestic harmony as Mrs Bullough. But it wasn't to last. The early signs of the paranoid neurosis and mental health problems which would overwhelm her in later years were already in evidence. She mastered the art of being reclusive long before Garbo took up the mantle. Her final years were spent in isolation, her personality eroded by her mental health problems. Elsie died alone in 1962, a tragic end to a life which had promised so much. In fact her life had been Anything But Merry from the very beginning.

Book President McKinley

Download or read book President McKinley written by Robert W. Merry and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lively, definitive, eye-opening, [this book] by acclaimed historian Robert W. Merry brilliantly evokes the life and presidency of William McKinley, cut short by an assassin. Most often lost in the shadow of his brilliant and flamboyant successor, TR, the twenty-fifth president is presented by Merry as a transformative figure, the first modern Republican. It was President McKinley who established the United States as an imperial power. In the Spanish-American War he kicked Spain out of the Caribbean; in the Pacific he acquired Hawaii and the Philippines through war and diplomacy; he took the country to a strict gold standard; he developed the doctrine of 'fair trade'; he forced the 'Open Door' to China; and he forged the 'special relationship' with Great Britain. McKinley established the noncolonial imperialism that took America global. He set the stage for the bold leadership of Theodore Roosevelt, who built on his accomplishments. [This book] brings to life a sympathetic man and an often overlooked president. Merry raises his rank to a chief executive of consequence who paved the way for the American Century."--Dust jacket flap.
