Book Misfit Modernism

Download or read book Misfit Modernism written by Octavio R. González and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Octavio R. González revisits the theme of alienation in the twentieth-century novel, identifying an alternative aesthetic centered on the experience of double exile, or marginalization from both majority and home culture. This misfit modernist aesthetic decenters the mainstream narrative of modernism—which explores alienation from a universal and existential perspective—by showing how a group of authors leveraged modernist narrative to explore minoritarian experiences of cultural nonbelonging. Tying the biography of a particular author to a close reading of one of that author’s major works, González considers in turn Nella Larsen’s Quicksand, Wallace Thurman’s The Blacker the Berry, Jean Rhys’s Quartet, and Christopher Isherwood’s A Single Man. Each of these novels explores conditions of maladjustment within one of three burgeoning cultural movements that sought representation in the greater public sphere: the New Negro movement during the Harlem Renaissance, the 1920s Paris expatriate scene, and the queer expatriate scene in Los Angeles before Stonewall. Using a methodological approach that resists institutional taxonomies of knowledge, González shows that this double exile speaks profoundly through largely autobiographical narratives and that the novels’ protagonists challenge the compromises made by these minoritarian groups out of an urge to assimilate into dominant social norms and values. Original and innovative, Misfit Modernism is a vital contribution to conversations about modernism in the contexts of sexual identity, nationality, and race. Moving beyond the debates over the intellectual legacies of intersectionality and queer theory, González shows us new ways to think about exclusion.

Book American Literary Misfits

Download or read book American Literary Misfits written by D. Berton Emerson and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of nineteenth-century American literature has long been tied up with the study of American democracy. Just as some regions in the United States are elevated to stand in for the whole nation—New England is a good example—D. Berton Emerson argues the same is true for American literature of the nineteenth century; a few canonical texts overrepresent the more motley history of American letters. Emerson examines an eclectic group of literary texts that have rarely, if ever, been considered representative of "the nation" because of their unseemly characters or plots, divergence from dominant literary trends of the era, or local particularity. These are his "literary misfits," authors and texts that show different forms of egalitarianism in action that existed outside and even against the dominant liberal narratives of American democracy. Emerson's unique contribution is revealing these texts and the people they represent as rich with political knowledge. This knowledge, he argues, finds its most potent expression in the local. Such texts show us a different kind of democratic politics: one that is egalitarian, disorderly, and radical rather than homogeneous.

However, King Diad is not the same as he once was and soon, he is king in name only, for the new Lord Chamberlain has deftly assumed the power behind the throne. Yet the kingdom is in turmoil, for Lord Dade’s rebellion is pushing the kingdom to civil war. Quickly assembling an army, the Lord Chamberlain sends his forces south with the intent of crushing the insurgency, while permanently removing Dade as a threat. Though willing to help restore order to the kingdom, Duncan vividly remembers the last time Diad was King and hurriedly builds an elite army of Templars, loyal only to him. With his power base expanding, and with Guina no longer Queen, will Duncan be content as Lord and High Priest? While the kingdom is plunged into turmoil, Alexis has found sanctuary with the mountain folk who call themselves Cinoc Mar. She immediately begins training their warriors in the deadly martial arts only to learn too late their ambition is to rule all of Gambria, and the fact that she is expected to fight against those whom she once called friends. Book excerpt: “Understated” and “tasteful” could never be applied to Annie, and that’s just fine with her. A colorful actress with a decades-long career in TV, film, and theater—including a recurring role on Seinfeld and a center-stage spot touring with The Moth—Annie offers her trademark unabashed takes on both everyday and typically taboo topics. Whether she’s sharing her thoughts on the miracle of childbirth (“It’s a miracle that anyone who’s been through it is willing to do it again”), religion (“William Shakespeare was not Jewish; no Jew could write a play called All’s Well That Ends Well”), motherhood, or any other topic, Annie will have you laughing out loud. Underlying the humor are poignant observations that feel particularly relevant today: the importance of kindness and consideration, how we’re all more alike than different, and the freedom to be found in self-acceptance. You’ll put down this book feeling not just lighter but inspired by Annie’s wisdom and insight, gathered over eight decades. Whether you’re seeking raw authenticity in an Insta-perfect world, advice from the grandmother you wish you had, or just a laugh to lighten the load of daily life, The Book of Annie is just the ticket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when nothing goes according to plan in a fairytale? If you're a fan of quirky characters, fun yet heart-warming stories, slow burn and clean romance, all with cozy vibes and, of course, a dragon, then you will love this fairytale retelling - at its heart, a story about finding your happy ever after even when you don't fit the norm. It's not easy being a princess, especially when your fairytale life refuses to follow the script. Adrianna grapples with many problems. Her evil stepmother is too obsessed with her garden to remember being evil, her evil stepsister is adorable and dear to Adrianna’s heart, and if that wasn’t bad enough, her fairy godmother spends her days drinking, eating chocolate, and flirting with the gardener. And just when Adrianna thinks her life couldn't get any more absurd, enter Prince Charming—who inexplicably proposes to her stepmother. Adrianna decides that enough is enough—she's quitting the life of a princess altogether. Except that escaping a fairytale isn’t as easy as she thought, and to preserve her home and her family, she needs to somehow blunder her way to a Happy Ever After. Meaning a prince has to rescue her and propose marriage. So, accompanied by her tipsy fairy godmother and a distractingly handsome (annoyingly so) stablehand, she sets her sights on a formidable task – finding a dragon, in the hopes this will convince a prince to perform the required rescue and marriage proposal. Once-Upon-Thyme is a wonderfully twisted take on the classic fairytale formula, full of misfit characters, unexpected twists, and all about the importance of embracing life's beautiful imperfections. After all, even the most imperfect stories can lead to the most satisfying endings.

Book excerpt: In 1913, Toronto launched Canada's first woman's police court. The court was run by and for women, but was it a great achievement? This multifaceted portrait of the cases, defendants, and officials that graced its halls reveals a fundamental contradiction at the experiment's core: the Toronto Women's Police Court was both a site for feminist adaptations of justice and a court empowered to punish women. Reconstructed from case files and newspaper accounts, this engrossing portrait of the trials and tribulations that accompanied an early experiment in feminized justice sheds new light on maternal feminist politics, women and crime, and the role of resistance, agency, and experience in the criminal justice system.
