Book excerpt: Kissing ass is one of the most important things job seekers and employees need to learn. Fortunately for the majority of our population, you do not need a degree from an Ivy to learn this skill.Nearly every one of us has the capacity to be a kiss ass. People like to feel good about themselves! If you put someone else before yourself for just a little bit of time, that person will take care of you. In life, it doesn't matter if you want to be a teacher in France or an intern on Wall Street, it's not about what you know, it's who you know, so pucker up.If you're sick of hearing this saying, then it's time to get over it and face the music. It's the truth. Thankfully, I have learned to take the "who you know" aspect to the next level. Although you are probably well over school by now, please allow me to teach you a little lesson. There will always be someone above you who will be the reason that you do or do not get the job/promotion/boyfriend etc. Whether it's your boyfriend's mother or a networking opportunity, put on your game face and kiss ass like you've never kissed one before. Here's a trick to getting on someone's good side: always ask about his or her family. Do your research and know what's going on. Don't act like you haven't already Facebook stalked their entire family tree.Keep it simple with something like, "Hey Mark, how's Becky doing? I see she's working really hard on her music." Cue the fireworks because you are in. There is nothing someone cares more about than his or her flesh and blood. If you let them know that you have taken the time to not only ask about them, but to check up on their family...can you say brownie points?Stay up to date on what is going on in your target's life. If he or she has been working hard at the gym, let them know that you see results (regardless of what he or she actually looks like).Kissing ass is basically the same thing as being someone's b*tch. Offer to get your boss a coffee on your way out the door or go out of your way to pick up their favorite pastry from the shop down the street. This will let him or her know that while you have taken the time to invest in his/her interests that you are also just a friendly and nice person who enjoys doing nice things for people. Whether you are this person or not, fake it till you freaking make it.This is where this notebook becomes essential. To know the correct ass kissing topics, you must record everything about your boss while the information is fresh. You never know when a comment the boss makes may become a valuable asset in your ass kissing mission. The boss may mention in passing on day that he is a huge Yankees fan. How fast will your stock rise when you happen to mention that you have two tickets to the game that you aren't using. You never would have been in position to pull off that nuclear ass kiss if you hadn't jotted down "Big Yankees fan" in the notebook.Good luck and happy ass kissing.

Being a member of a one percenter motorcycle club requires extreme discipline; in this book, Nichols shows us what that life offers in return. Book excerpt: I pressed a kiss to the top of her head for the benefit of our audience. "Ready? "For you?" She ran her fingers along my jaw. "Always." She stood on her tippy toes and placed a soft kiss on my neck. A shiver spread through my entire body. Jesus. I took a hold of the back of her neck and turned her head up gently. I made sure the kiss was slow, tender. This was most likely the only time I’d get to do this and I was going to make it last. She melted into me with a sigh. When I pulled back, her eyes were half lidded, her breathing hard. If she looked like that after a kiss, what would she look like after… No. Bad Ray. Mary I have a problem. My best friend joined a cult and it’s been a while since I’ve been able to get a hold of her. You’d think since my brother is a partner at Daisy Security, a company that helps track people down, I should have no problem finding her. Except that Jack seems to think I’m overreacting. That leaves me no choice but to go behind his back and ask a member of their sister company for help. When Nyssa introduces me to Ray, I have to admit, I’m more than a little surprised by the feelings he brings forth with his soothing promises and calming touches. I didn’t come to Granger Springs to find love. I came here to find Tara. But maybe… maybe I can find both? Ray I’ve spent the past two years of my life working as Pup Security’s rat. I’m the guy who tracks down the leads and makes sure they’re solid before the team moves in. I’d have been perfectly happy doing the same for the rest of my life, so when they offer me a partner position, I’m floored and beyond thankful. Then, I meet Mary and promise to help her before I know what I’m getting into. I can’t help myself. All it takes is one look into those amazing eyes. The Daisy and Pup teams have a strict no secrets or lies rule and by the end of this assignment, my life as I know it will be done and it will be back in the gutters with the actual rats. So, falling for Mary? It’s a bad idea. It’s a terrible idea. But, lately, I’m the king of terrible ideas...

Book excerpt: When a Hollywood producer comes to Oriana at the end of her life to propose a movie, the story unfolds of her gutsy career rise as a journalist, her tragic love, and her greatest regret. Oriana Fallaci was born a rebel. She fought beside her father at age fourteen in Italy’s Resistance against the Nazis and overcame poverty, the lack of a university education, and relentless sexism in the newsroom. By 1973 when she moved to New York, Oriana Fallaci was hailed by Newsweek as the greatest interviewer of her day. She became famous for her courageous and hard-hitting interviews with Kissinger, Arafat, Meir, Khomeini and other world leaders—not to mention the most prominent celebrities and artists of her day. That same year, 1973, she did what no journalist is supposed to do: she fell in love with one of her subjects, Alexander Panagoulis, the Greek poet and hero. She was 44, he was 34; they lived in different countries. It didn’t matter. Oriana had finally found what she longed for: a full life. But can a woman ever have it all, or does life always exact a price? Oriana is the first novel about the glamorous and fearless Italian journalist whom Christiane Amanpour has called her role model for asking tough questions—and who holds a place beside Mike Wallace and Barbara Walters when naming world-class interviewers. This biographical novel tells the story of one of the first women to break through the glass ceiling of journalism, a woman who wasn’t afraid to speak truth to power and who revolutionized her field, all while trying to balance her career with love and happiness. For readers who loved Hidden Figures and stories about women who succeed as women in realms traditionally reserved for men.

Book Patricia Highsmith Her Diaries and Notebooks 1941 1995

Download or read book Patricia Highsmith Her Diaries and Notebooks 1941 1995 written by Patricia Highsmith and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 1413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times • Times Critics Top Books of 2021 The Times (of London) • Best Books of the Year Excerpted in The New Yorker Profiled in The Los Angeles Times Publishing for the centenary of her birth, Patricia Highsmith’s diaries “offer the most complete picture ever published” of the canonical author (New York Times). Relegated to the genre of mystery during her lifetime, Patricia Highsmith is now recognized as one of “our greatest modernist writers” (Gore Vidal). Beloved by fans who were unaware of the real psychological turmoil behind her prose, the famously secretive Highsmith refused to authorize a biography, instead sequestering herself in her Switzerland home in her final years. Posthumously, her devoted editor Anna von Planta discovered her diaries and notebooks in 1995, tucked in a closet—with tantalizing instructions to be read. For years thereafter, von Planta meticulously culled from over eight thousand pages to help reveal the inscrutable figure behind the legendary pen. Beginning with her junior year at Barnard in 1941, Highsmith ritualistically kept a diary and notebook—the former to catalog her day, the latter to brainstorm stories and hone her craft. This volume weaves diary and notebook simultaneously, exhibiting precisely how Highsmith’s personal affairs seeped into her fiction—and the sheer darkness of her own imagination. Charming yet teetering on the egotistical, young “Pat” lays bare her dizzying social life in 1940s Greenwich Village, barhopping with Judy Holliday and Jane Bowles, among others. Alongside Flannery O’Conner and Chester Himes, she attended—at the recommendation of Truman Capote—the Yaddo artist colony in 1948, where she drafted Strangers on a Train. Published in 1950 and soon adapted by Alfred Hitchcock, this debut novel brought recognition and brief financial security, but left a heartsick Highsmith agonizing: “What is the life I choose?” Providing extraordinary insights into gender and sexuality in mid-twentieth-century America, Highsmith’s diaries convey her euphoria writing The Price of Salt (1951). Yet her sophomore novel would have to be published under a pseudonym, so as not to tarnish her reputation. Indeed, no one could anticipate commercial reception for a novel depicting love between two women in the McCarthy era. Seeking relief from America, Highsmith catalogs her peripatetic years in Europe, subsisting on cigarettes and growing more bigoted and satirical with age. After a stay in Positano with a new lover, she reflects in her notebooks on being an expat, and gleefully conjures the unforgettable The Talented Mr. Ripley (1955); it would be this sociopathic antihero who would finally solidify her true fame. At once lovable, detestable, and mesmerizing, Highsmith put her turbulent life to paper for five decades, acutely aware there must be “a few usable things in literature.” A memoir as significant in our own century as Sylvia Plath’s journals and Simone de Beauvoir’s writings were to another time, Patricia Highsmith: Her Diaries and Notebooks is an historic work that chronicles a woman’s rise against the conventional tide to unparalleled literary prominence.

Book Patricia Highsmith s Diaries and Notebooks The New York Years 1941 1950

Download or read book Patricia Highsmith s Diaries and Notebooks The New York Years 1941 1950 written by Patricia Highsmith and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential for understanding Patricia Highsmith’s transgressive life and prophetic work, this volume is also “one of the most observant and ecstatic accounts . . . about being young and alive in New York City” (Dwight Garner,—New York Times). Before Alfred Hitchcock adapted her debut novel, Strangers on a Train, for the big screen; before her suave and sociopathic Thomas Ripley snaked his way into the canon of psychological suspense; and before The Price of Salt became a cult classic of romantic obsession, who was Patricia Highsmith? Focused on her formative years in Manhattan, this condensed edition of Highsmith’s monumental Diaries and Notebooks reveals “Pat” at her most passionate and florescent. Beginning in 1941 at Barnard College and encompassing the Texas native’s adventurous twenties,?The New York Years intertwines scenes from her dizzying social life—rife with sleepless nights barhopping in the queer underground Greenwich Village scene, always juggling too many lovers—with an intimate self-portrait of a young artist who by day dispassionately wrote comics for a paycheck. Amid all the hangovers and the breakups, she read voraciously and honed her craft with verve. Laid bare in this perennial reader’s edition are the bold, hilarious, romantic, tragic, and maddeningly contradictory observations of one of “our greatest modernist writers” (Gore Vidal).
