Download or read book Made in Prison English Version written by Feby Indirani and published by Kepustakaan Populer Gramedia. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prison or also known as The Correctional Facility is not always about dreary and scary things. Many creative works have been produced from behind the walls; the delicious bakeries, high artsy painting, even garment products with export quality. All of those works are produced by prisoners, or also known as the inmates. The products that are made by the inmates, brings many stories behind it, from bitter till touching story. Through those productive activities, they changed the sorrow into hope to get a second chance to bring their life back into society. Through this book, Evy Amir Syamsudin reflected on her experiences to guide the inmates and her vision to humanize them. “Made in Prison is more than the documentation of a practical way to help prison inmates to reintegrate into society. It is a testament to a compassionate Indonesian society—a way to look at its people, even those who have made mistakes, with love and appreciation.” —Mr. Michele Zaccheo, Chief of United Nations Television & Radio “The goodness can be worked anywhere. Made in Prison talks about how goodness and love also happened in The Correctional Facility. As Mother Theresa said, we can do small things with great love.” —Rosianna Silalahi, Kompas TV News Director

Book George Orwell on Screen

Download or read book George Orwell on Screen written by David Ryan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British author and essayist George Orwell shot to fame with two iconic novels: the anti-Stalinist satire Animal Farm and the dystopian masterpiece Nineteen Eighty-Four. A few years after his death in 1950, the CIA bankrolled screen adaptations of both novels as Cold War propaganda. Orwell's depiction of a totalitarian police state captivated the media in the 1980s. Today, mounting anxieties about digital surveillance and globalization have made him a hot property in Hollywood. Drawing on interviews with actors, writers, directors and producers, this book presents the first comprehensive study of Orwell on film and television. Beginning with CBS's 1953 live production of Nineteen Eighty-Four that mirrored the McCarthy witch hunts, the author covers 20 wide-ranging adaptations, documentaries and biopics, including two lost BBC dramatizations from 1965.

Download or read book Outside the Gates of Eden written by Peter Bacon Hales and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cultural historian and author of Atomic Spaces offers a comprehensive account of the Baby Boomer years—from the atomic age to the virtual age. Born under the shadow of the atomic bomb, with little security but the cold comfort of duck-and-cover drills, the postwar generations lived through—and led—some of the most momentous changes in all of American history. In this new cultural history, Peter Bacon Hales explores those decades through a succession of resonant moments, spaces, and artifacts of everyday life. Finding unexpected connections, he traces the intertwined undercurrents of promise and peril. From newsreels of the first atomic bomb tests to the invention of a new ideal American life in Levittown; from the teen pop music of the Brill Building and the Beach Boys to Bob Dylan’s canny transformations; from the painful failures of communes to the breathtaking utopian potential of the digital age, Hales reveals a nation in transition as a new generation began to make its mark on the world it was inheriting. Outside the Gates of Eden is the most comprehensive account yet of the baby boomers, their parents, and their children, as seen through the places they built, the music and movies and shows they loved, and the battles they fought to define their nation, their culture, and their place in what remains a fragile and dangerous world.

Book Operas in English

    Book Details:
  • Author : Margaret Ross Griffel
  • Publisher : Scarecrow Press
  • Release : 2012-12-21
  • ISBN : 0810883252
  • Pages : 1015 pages

Download or read book Operas in English written by Margaret Ross Griffel and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-12-21 with total page 1015 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many opera dictionaries and encyclopedias are available, very few are devoted exclusively to operas in a single language. In this revised and expanded edition of Operas in English: A Dictionary, Margaret Ross Griffel brings up to date her original work on operas written specifically to an English text (including works both originally prepared in English, as well as English translations). Since its original publication in 1999, Griffel has added nearly 800 entries to the 4,300 from the original volume, covering the world of opera in the English language from 1634 through 2011. Listed alphabetically by letter, each opera entry includes alternative titles, if any; a full, descriptive title; the number of acts; the composer’s name; the librettist’s name, the original language of the libretto, and the original source of the text, with the source title; the date, place, and cast of the first performance; the date of composition, if it occurred substantially earlier than the premiere date; similar information for the first U.S. (including colonial) and British (i.e., in England, Scotland, or Wales) performances, where applicable; a brief plot summary; the main characters (names and vocal ranges, where known); some of the especially noteworthy numbers cited by name; comments on special musical problems, techniques, or other significant aspects; and other settings of the text, including non-English ones, and/or other operas involving the same story or characters (cross references are indicated by asterisks). Entries also include such information as first and critical editions of the score and libretto; a bibliography, ranging from scholarly studies to more informal journal articles and reviews; a discography; and information on video recordings. Griffel also includes four appendixes, a selective bibliography, and two indexes. The first appendix lists composers, their places and years of birth and death, and their operas included in the text as entries; the second does the same for librettists; the third records authors whose works inspired or were adapted for the librettos; and the fourth comprises a chronological listing of the A–Z entries, including as well as the date of first performance, the city of the premiere, the short title of the opera, and the composer. Griffel also include a main character index and an index of singers, conductors, producers, and other key figures.

  • Publisher : Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press
  • Release : 2019-12-01

Download or read book Writing Underground written by Martin Machovec and published by Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In this collection of writings produced between 2000 and 2018, the pioneering literary historian of the Czech underground, Martin Machovec, examines the multifarious nature of the underground phenomenon. After devoting considerable attention to the circle surrounding the band The Plastic People of the Universe and their manager, the poet Ivan M. Jirous, Machovec turns outward to examine the broader concept of the underground, comparing the Czech incarnation not only with the movements of its Central and Eastern European neighbors, but also with those in the world at large. In one essay, he reflects on the so-called Půlnoc Editions, which published illegal texts in the darkest days of the late forties and early fifties. In other essays, Machovec examines the relationship between illegal texts published at home (samizdat) and those smuggled out to be published abroad (tamizdat), as well as the range of literature that can be classified as samizdat, drawing attention to movements frequently overlooked by literary critics. In his final, previously unpublished essay, Machovec examines Jirous’s “Report on the Third Czech Musical Revival” not as a merely historical document, but as literature itself.
