Book The Mom Egg

Download or read book The Mom Egg written by Marjorie Tesser and published by . This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mom Egg, an annual literary journal, publishes sharp, inventive fiction, creative prose, and poetry by mothers about everything and by everyone about mothers and motherhood. In this issue The Mom Egg explores the nuances of Mother Tongue. Mothers are emissaries and guardians of language. A mother murmurs to her infant son. Mother's words hold power to hurt or heal. A new immigrant struggles to learn English; later generations, to cling to remnants of language and culture. Mother Tongue speaks out. Mother Tongue has been silenced-and freed. Mother Tongue names. Mother Tongue tastes and plays. A must-read for mothers and lovers of language, this collection will challenge, delight and inspire. "The Mom Egg is all about motherhood. It's about the bodies and minds of the women who do this gorgeous, messy thing, and I loved reading every page of it." Renee Beauregard Lute, The Review Review "...fine creative work like this belongs in the larger conversations about private life and women's issues..." Tanya Angell Allen, New Pages

Book excerpt: In A Survival Guide for Landlocked Mermaids, artist Margot Datz sees the she-nymph within, struggling to emerge, and in a swirl of whimsical and witty wisdom, lovingly offers tips for today's world of dating, mating, and beyond. The landlocked mermaid is a symbol of the contemporary woman, trapped in a paradoxical dilemma of being part worldly and domesticated, part untamable and intuitive. Margot's beautifully painted, contemporary mermaids are caught in the nets of their own comical dilemmas, circling the heart's fishbowl of romantic longings and in the murky depths of deep emotion. Book Mothershell

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrea Potos
  • Publisher : Kelsay Books
  • Release : 2019-04-27
  • ISBN : 9781949229837
  • Pages : 62 pages

Download or read book Mothershell written by Andrea Potos and published by Kelsay Books. This book was released on 2019-04-27 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think of a mother cupping a child's face in her hands, and you have the shell of Mothershell, Andrea Potos' tender and luminous new collection. Yes, these are poems of loss: her mother's cancer and treatments, her death and the grief that follows, but these are also poems that celebrate the chord, "the unseen thread" that binds mothers and daughters forever. Potos imagines heaven as an eternal breakfast, mother and daughter drinking our coffee/black and filled to the top. Coffee without bitterness or sweet / but somewhere in the perfection / of the middle. Here are poems that celebrate the power of presence, poems of travel: Ireland, France, Italy, ekphrastic poems that illuminate paintings. In "What the Poem Did," Potos writes It became a spine/walked me upright/ into the day, and this is what this book does, walks with each of us and sustains us in the long journey of all of our ordinary days. Barbara Crooker, author of Some Glad Morning, and others In this stunning, new collection by Andrea Potos, we find beautiful windows into the life of abiding love-each poem steeped in elegant imagery and story. A simple moment of sharing eggs over-easy with her mother, or witnessing her daughter's essence igniting in the Italian light, is all we need, to know the deep connection this poet has to others. Potos offers up these poems as prayer and healing. This collection is a love letter to memory, hope, and presence. She brings memories to life so vividly, that we, too, can hear her mother's voice through glittering veins of stone. Gentle in their touch, these beautifully sculpted poems pay tribute to the quiet strength needed for the loss you know is coming and the spaces left behind. Cristina M. R. Norcross, editor of Blue Heron Review; author of Beauty in the Broken Places, Amnesia and Awakenings, and others In Mothershell, Andrea Potos uses light and color and sound as expertly as she did in her recent chapbook, Arrows of Light. In this new collection, visual and tactile arts expand metaphors even further, weaving rich phrases such as all of them spun and still spinning / with filaments of unstoppable light into a glorious, whole cloth that not only honors memories but recreates tangible moments with her mother and other loved ones. Potos explores relationships in deftly conveyed, universal allegories that touch our innermost understanding. As so aptly expressed in "Writing My Mother," Potos does her writing on the top of light, her hands passing / across brightness and slanting shadows. Every bit of light and shadow in Mothershell reflects a gifted writer's heart and mind. C. Ann Kodra, author of Under an Adirondack Moon

Book The Strategic Poet

  • Author : Diane Lockward
  • Publisher : eBookIt.com
  • Release : 2021
  • ISBN : 1947896490
  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book The Strategic Poet written by Diane Lockward and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2021 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strategic Poet: Honing the Craft focuses on the craft of poetry and is based on the belief that craft can be taught and the best teacher of craft is a good poem. This book assumes a knowledgeable reader, that is, one who already knows the language of poetry and already practices the craft. This book is organized into thirteen sections, each one devoted to a specific poetic strategy. While only thirteen strategies are used for organizational purposes, the reader will find many additional strategies referred to and discussed within the sections. There is a progression from one section to the next, but each section also stands alone, so the reader or teacher can follow the order of the Contents or move about freely among the sections. Each section begins with a Craft Talk solicited from a well-known poet with a clear mastery of craft. Each Craft Talk is followed by Model Poems and Prompts. Each Model Poem is followed by an analysis of its craft elements, especially its use of the section's strategy. One Model Poem in each section is followed by a Commentary from the poet who wrote the poem and is focused on a particular strategy used in the poem. Each of the thirty-six Prompts is followed by two Sample Poems written to the prompts. These seventy-two poems demonstrate that the prompts are not mere exercises and can produce terrific poems. Each section ends with three Bonus Prompts. There thirty-nine additional prompts were contributed by thirteen contemporary poets. These short prompts provide additional practice with the strategies, can be used multiple times, and should lead to some good poems. Contributors include 114 of our best contemporary poets. This book is suitable for use by poets working independently, by poets in writing groups, and by teachers in the classroom.

Book Using Stories to Build Bridges with Traumatized Children

Download or read book Using Stories to Build Bridges with Traumatized Children written by Kim S. Golding and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2014-07-21 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using Stories to Build Bridges with Traumatized Children is full of creative ideas for how you can use stories therapeutically with children in counselling, life story work or direct work. Psychologist Kim S. Golding shows how you can use stories to build connections with children aged 4–16 and support their recovery from trauma and stress. She illustrates the techniques with 21 stories adapted from her own clinical work with children and families, and explains how you can expand or adapt them to make them more relevant for a particular child. Advice and stories are arranged into sections dealing with common psychological issues, including looking back and moving on, lack of trust and need for attention. Golding also gives invaluable tips for planning stories and life story work, and for storymaking with children. She also describes how stories can be used therapeutically with parents of traumatized children and as a tool for self-reflection by counsellors. Imaginative and practical, this book will be enormously useful for counsellors, psychologists, therapists and social workers working with traumatized children, and will also be helpful for parents and carers involved in therapeutic parenting.

Book Focal Point

  • Author : Jenny Qi
  • Publisher : Steel Toe Books
  • Release : 2021-10-13
  • ISBN : 9781949540260
  • Pages : 98 pages

Download or read book Focal Point written by Jenny Qi and published by Steel Toe Books. This book was released on 2021-10-13 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2020 Steel Toe Books Poetry Award, Focal Point is a scientist's unofficial dissertation, a daughter's faithful correspondence, and a coming-of-age story. Written largely while Jenny Qi was a young Ph.D. student conducting cancer research after her beloved mother's death from cancer, the collection turns to "all the rituals of all the faiths," invoking Western and Eastern mythology and history, metaphors from cell biology, and even Jimi Hendrix, as Qi searches for a container to hold grief. The opening poem of this debut collection primes us to consider all definitions of the titular "focal point," as the speaker evaluates this moment of early loss beneath a literal and metaphoric microscope. Here, the past and future converge, but from here, what does divergence look like? What can a scientific mind do except interrogate and attempt to measure the unknown and immeasurable? These poems, at once tender and suffused with wry humor, diverse in form and scope, go on to navigate illness, early relationships, racism, climate change, mass shootings, and the COVID-19 pandemic, unflinching in the face of death and the darker side of human nature. At its core, Focal Point is an uncompromising interrogation of how to be alive in the world, always loving something that has been or is in the process of being lost.

Book Mothers

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jacqueline Rose
  • Publisher : Macmillan + ORM
  • Release : 2018-05-01
  • ISBN : 0374715831
  • Pages : 162 pages

Download or read book Mothers written by Jacqueline Rose and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple argument guides this book: motherhood is the place in our culture where we lodge, or rather bury, the reality of our own conflicts. By making mothers the objects of both licensed idealization and cruelty, we blind ourselves to the world’s iniquities and shut down the portals of the heart. Mothers are the ultimate scapegoat for our personal and political failings, for everything that is wrong with the world, which becomes their task (unrealizable, of course) to repair. Moving commandingly between pop cultural references such as Roald Dahl’s Matilda to insights on motherhood in the ancient world and the contemporary stigmatization of single mothers, Jacqueline Rose delivers a groundbreaking report into something so prevalent we hardly notice. Mothers is an incisive, rousing call to action from one of our most important contemporary thinkers.
