Book excerpt: Do you suppose, way down deep, there are mermaids fast asleep? Written in a gentle, lyrical style that mirrors a lullaby, MERMAIDS FAST ASLEEP asks the question that young children have maybe asked before bedtime: Are there mermaids asleep in the sea? As our young human gazes into the water, her imagination wanders as she pictures the life that young mermaids live in the sea. Do they count fish instead of sheep? Do they breathe water like air? The book begins just at dusk as the sky is still Starbust oranges and pinks. And as the book moves on, the colors deepen to blues, greens, and purples until the sky is inky as night and a silvery moon magically glows. Paired with stunning art from Zoe Persico, MERMAIDS FAST ASLEEP is a must bedtime book for young mermaid fans.

Book New Directions in Children s Gothic

Download or read book New Directions in Children s Gothic written by Anna Jackson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children’s literature today is dominated by the gothic mode, and it is in children’s gothic fictions that we find the implications of cultural change most radically questioned and explored. This collection of essays looks at what is happening in the children’s Gothic now when traditional monsters have become the heroes, when new monsters have come into play, when globalisation brings Harry Potter into China and yaoguai into the children’s Gothic, and when childhood itself and children’s literature as a genre can no longer be thought of as an uncontested space apart from the debates and power struggles of an adult domain. We look in detail at series such as The Mortal Instruments, Twilight, Chaos Walking, The Power of Five, Skulduggery Pleasant, and Cirque du Freak; at novels about witches and novels about changelings; at the Gothic in China, Japan and Oceania; and at authors including Celia Rees, Frances Hardinge, Alan Garner and Laini Taylor amongst many others. At a time when the energies and anxieties of children’s novels can barely be contained anymore within the genre of children’s literature, spilling over into YA and adult literature, we need to pay attention. Weird things are happening and they matter.

Book Zombies Versus Comicon

    Book Details:
  • Author : Terry F. Torrey
  • Publisher : Provocative Press
  • Release :
  • ISBN : 1961042096
  • Pages : 212 pages

Download or read book Zombies Versus Comicon written by Terry F. Torrey and published by Provocative Press. This book was released on with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After hours. Underground. Trapped. With real zombies. Humble garbageman Vance Campbell doesn't care very much for comic books, superheros, or pop culture in general, but his wife does, so he has volunteered to work at the local convention to get tickets for her and their daughter. But when a freak earthquake literally shakes things up, the festive weekend takes a turn for the worse. Now, Vance finds himself trapped by a broken elevator on the mezzanine level with a motley crew of other volunteers, vendors, and celebrities. To get out they'll have to make their way around to the other elevator—and straight through a hungry horde of undead spawned by the earthquake—before the horror envelops the rest of Comicon, and his family. If you like campy apocalyptic adventures that don't sacrifice scientific plausibility for great fun, where the characters are locked in a desperate battle against unknown forces, with neither the skills nor the equipment to handle the violent task, and you like turning blood-soaked pages as fast as you can, laughing with your heart pounding all the while, you'll love Zombies Versus Comicon. Fans of realistic, plausible, funny science fiction stories will enjoy the Con Chaos series of campy but realistic pop-culture monster novels, which can be enjoyed in any order, but which may be best without spoilers when read in order. The Con Chaos books contain graphic violence, strong language, intense situations, and frequent absurd humor. Movies based on these books would likely be rated R.

Book Mermaids and the Production of Knowledge in Early Modern England

Download or read book Mermaids and the Production of Knowledge in Early Modern England written by Tara E. Pedersen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We no longer ascribe the term ’mermaid’ to those we deem sexually or economically threatening; we do not ubiquitously use the mermaid’s image in political propaganda or feature her within our houses of worship; perhaps most notably, we do not entertain the possibility of the mermaid’s existence. This, author Tara Pedersen argues, makes it difficult for contemporary scholars to consider the mermaid as a figure who wields much social significance. During the early modern period, however, this was not the case, and Pedersen illustrates the complicated category distinctions that the mermaid inhabits and challenges in 16th-and 17th-century England. Addressing epistemological questions about embodiment and perception, this study furthers research about early modern theatrical culture by focusing on under-theorized and seldom acknowledged representations of mermaids in English locations and texts. While individuals in early modern England were under pressure to conform to seemingly monolithic ideals about the natural order, there were also significant challenges to this order. Pedersen uses the figure of the mermaid to rethink some of these challenges, for the mermaid often appears in surprising places; she is situated at the nexus of historically specific debates about gender, sexuality, religion, the marketplace, the new science, and the culture of curiosity and travel. Although these topics of inquiry are not new, Pedersen argues that the mermaid provides a new lens through which to look at these subjects and also helps scholars think about the present moment, methodologies of reading, and many category distinctions that are important to contemporary scholarly debates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joe Comstock was not at all ready for this story, being your basic fifteen-year-old and all. If you had told him that he'd be helping Otis, the totem bird butler, serve French press coffee to the Nahuatl corn goddess, he would have gone to his room and sent another hopeful text to his much-desired Rachel. If you had insisted that the mystery of the origin of Fish Head Fever be solved even as he was being chased by a crazed Aztec deity, he would have shaken his head, hopped his skateboard and zoomed off to wrestling practice. But life has its ways. Your family dies. Your sloop goes down. The Coast Guard dudes that rescue you spread massive merm tails on deck. And zombies and slimy Russian fish spirits must be dealt with. You know... It just happens.

Book excerpt: THE MERMAID’S TALE In a city of majesty and brutality, of warring races and fragile alliances, a sacred Mermaid has been brutally murdered. An abomination, a soulless Orc is summoned to hunt the killer. As the world around the Orc drifts into war and madness, her search for justice leads her on a journey to discover redemption and even beauty in the midst of chaos. "He said the Arukh only had one word. It was their word for rage and for pain, for fighting and dying. It was a word spoken in sorrow and anger. It was the word they said to a world that didn't want them, that had no place for them. It was loneliness and defiance and in the end it was sorrow and surrender. 'Arrah' he told me, it was all the words the Arukh needed." “This book is violent and brutal and haunting and beautiful. If I could give this a sixth star, I would" - Michael R. Fletcher, Author of Beyond Redemption D.G. Valdron is an utterly fearless writer. Frankly, I think he's one of the most original writers available today. -- Amazing Stories Online “The Mermaid=s Tale is a fable of personhood wrapped in a murder mystery framed by a fantasy setting, peopled by familiar races that are presented in subtly original ways.” – Melanie Martila “I absolutely loved this book; it's already one I know I'll remember for a long time. I would never have thought a book about an orc would be one of the best existential works I've ever read.” - - Julia Pike-kelly

Book Encounters of Body and Soul in Contemporary Religious Practices

Download or read book Encounters of Body and Soul in Contemporary Religious Practices written by Anna Fedele and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social scientists and philosophers confronted with religious phenomena have always been challenged to find a proper way to describe the spiritual experiences of the social group they were studying. The influence of the Cartesian dualism of body and mind (or soul) led to a distinction between non-material, spiritual experiences (i.e., related to the soul) and physical, mechanical experiences (i.e., related to the body). However, recent developments in medical science on the one hand and challenges to universalist conceptions of belief and spirituality on the other have resulted in “body” and “soul” losing the reassuring solid contours they had in the past. Yet, in “Western culture,” the body–soul duality is alive, not least in academic and media discourses. This volume pursues the ongoing debates and discusses the importance of the body and how it is perceived in contemporary religious faith: what happens when “body” and “soul” are un-separated entities? Is it possible, even for anthropologists and ethnographers, to escape from “natural dualism”? The contributors here present research in novel empirical contexts, the benefits and limits of the old dichotomy are discussed, and new theoretical strategies proposed.
