Download or read book The Experiment written by Myrto Azina Chronides and published by Garnet Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2022-07-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myrto Azina Chronides'sbook attempts to unify subtly connected narratives, partial tales that lean toward the structure of a more synthetic prose piece, but which cannot be regarded as either novella or novel. The book does not fit within any traditional genre of creative prose. The Experiment can be characterized as 'a study on erotic love and the soul'. From the beginning, He and She, take a pledge to undergo an 'experiment', retrace erotic love and their relation by abstaining from carnal contact so as to devote themselves to writing. She, 'a woman in perpetual search' is an unbowed woman who claims her freedom; and He, 'a wise man, a believer in the Socratic "All I know is that I know nothing" ', are invited to participate in the experiment in equal terms. The erotic couple is called to recognize through writing and literature the Other, his/her other half, his/her mate and eventually the Self as Other. Despite the darkness that pervades the conclusion of the book, one may detect hints of the lovely flower of love and writing emerging through the ordeal and torture of prose. The question remains; what about the other things, the unwritten ones, those that lie in the land of silence? Apparently, both neo post-modernist (contemporary) literature and The Experiment would rather an open, indefinite ending.
Download or read book Take a Bow Noah Mitchell written by Tobias Madden and published by Page Street YA. This book was released on 2023-01-03 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There Are No Cheat Codes for Showmance Seventeen-year-old gaymer Noah Mitchell only has one friend left: the wonderful, funny, strictly online-only MagePants69. After years playing RPGs together, they know everything about each other, except anything that would give away their real life identities. And Noah is certain that if they could just meet in person, they would be soulmates. Noah would do anything to make this happen—including finally leaving his gaming chair to join a community theater show that he’s only mostly sure MagePants69 is performing in. Noah has never done anything like theater—he can’t sing, he can’t dance, and he’s never willingly watched a musical—but he’ll have to go all in to have a chance at love. With Noah’s mum performing in the lead role, and former friends waiting in the wings to sabotage his reputation, his plan to make MagePants69 fall in love with him might be a little more difficult than originally anticipated. And the longer Noah waits to come clean, the more tangled his web of lies becomes. By opening night, he will have to decide if telling the truth is worth closing the curtain on his one shot at true love.
Download or read book Strong on Music written by Vera Brodsky Lawrence and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1995-12-18 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second volume of Strong on Music, Vera Brodsky Lawrence carries into the 1850s her landmark account of the nineteenth-century New York music scene. Using music entries from George Templeton Strong's famous journals—most published here for the first time—as a point of departure, Lawrence provides a vivid portrait of a vibrant musical culture. Each chapter presents one year in the musical life of New York City, with Lawrence's extensive commentary enriched both by excerpts from Strong's diaries and a lavish selection of little-known music criticism and comment from the period. The reviews, written by an often truculent, sometimes venal tribe of music journalists, cover the entire world of music—from opera to barrel organ, salon to saloon. In this New York, operas performed by renowned artists are parodied by blackface minstrels; performances of the Philharmonic Society are drowned by the raucous chatter of flirtatious adolescents, who turn concerts into a noisy singles' hangout; and irate critics trash the first performances of Verdi operas, calling the plots indecent and the scores noisy and unmelodic. In this volatile atmosphere, a native musical culture is born; its whose first faltering efforts are dubiously received, and the first American composers begin to emerge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed Cuban American author of Love and Ghost Letters delivers “a wonderful story about the stories we tell each other” set in 1960s Cuba (San Francisco Chronicle). Cuba, 1963. Hurricane Flora, one of the deadliest in recorded history, is bearing down on the island. Seven women have been forcibly evacuated from their homes and herded into the former governor’s mansion. There they are watched over by another woman—Ofelia, a young soldier of Castro’s new Cuba. As the storm rages and the floodwaters rise, a cigar factory lector named Maria Sirena tells the incredible story of her childhood during Cuba’s Third War of Independence; of her father Augustin, a ferocious rebel; of her mother, Lulu, an astonishing woman who fought, loved, dreamed, and suffered as fiercely as her husband. But stories have a way of taking on a life of their own, and soon Maria will reveal more about herself than she or anyone ever expected. Chantel Acevedo’s The Distant Marvels is an epic adventure tale, a family saga, a love story, a stunning historical account of armed struggle against oppressors, and a long tender plea for forgiveness. It is, finally, a life-affirming novel about the kind of love that lasts a lifetime and the very art of storytelling itself.
