Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to engender Mexican folk art and locate women at its centre by studying the processes of creation, distribution, and consumption, as well as examining iconographic aspects, and elements of class and ethnicity, from the perspective of gender. The author will demonstrate that the topic provides unique insights into Mexican culture, and has enormous relevance within and without the country, given the fact that much folk art is made for the United States and Europe, either in terms of the tourists who buy it on coming to Mexico, or that which is exported.

Book Women Street Photographers

Download or read book Women Street Photographers written by Gulnara Samoilova and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a rising number of women throughout the world picking up their cameras and capturing their surroundings, this book explores the work of 100 women and the experiences behind their greatest images. Traditionally a male-dominated field, street photography is increasingly becoming the domain of women. This fantastic collection of images reflects that shift, showcasing 100 contemporary women street photographers working around the world today, accompanied by personal statements about their work. Variously joyful, unsettling and unexpected, the photographs capture a wide range of extraordinary moments. The volume is curated by Gulnara Samoilova, founder of the Women Street Photographers project: a website, social media platform and annual exhibition. Photographer Melissa Breyer's introductory essay explores how the genre has intersected with gender throughout history, looking at how cultural changes in gender roles have overlapped with technological developments in the camera to allow key historical figures to emerge. Her text is complemented by a foreword by renowned photojournalist Ami Vitale, whose career as a war photographer and, later, global travels with National Geographic have allowed a unique insight into the realities of working as a woman photographer in different countries. In turns intimate and candid, the photographs featured in this book offer a kaleidoscopic glimpse of what happens when women across the world are behind the camera.

Book Striding Both Worlds

Download or read book Striding Both Worlds written by Melissa Kennedy and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Striding Both Worlds illuminates European influences in the fiction of Witi Ihimaera, Aotearoa New Zealand’s foremost Māori writer, in order to question the common interpretation of Māori writing as displaying a distinctive Māori world-view and literary style. Far from being discrete endogenous units, all cultures and literatures arise out of constant interaction, engagement, and even friction. Thus, Māori culture since the 1970s has been shaped by a long history of interaction with colonial British, Pakeha, and other postcolonial and indigenous cultures. Māori sovereignty and renaissance movements have harnessed the structures of European modernity, nation-building, and, more recently, Western global capitalism, transculturation, and diaspora – contexts which contest New Zealand bicultural identity, encouraging Māori to express their difference and self-sufficiency. Ihimaera’s fiction has been largely viewed as embodying the specific values of Māori renaissance and biculturalism. However, Ihimaera, in his techniques, modes, and themes, is indebted to a wider range of literary influences than national literary critique accounts for. In taking an international literary perspective, this book draws critical attention to little-known or disregarded aspects such as Ihimaera’s love of opera, the extravagance of his baroque lyricism, his exploration of fantasy, and his increasing interest in taking Māori into the global arena. In revealing a broad range of cultural and aesthetic influences and inter-references commonly seen as irrelevant to contemporary Māori literature, Striding Both Worlds argues for a hitherto frequently overlooked and undervalued depth and complexity to Ihimaera’s imaginary. The present study argues that an emphasis on difference tends to lose sight of fiction’s capacity to appreciate originality and individuality in the polyphony of its very form and function. In effect, literary negotiation of Māori sovereign space takes place in its forms rather than in its content: the uniqueness of Māori literature is found in the way it uses the common tools of literary fiction, including language, imagery, the text’s relationship to reality, and the function of characterization. By interpeting aspects of Ihimaera’s oeuvre for what they share with other literatures in English, Striding Both Worlds aims to present an additional, complementary approach to Māori, New Zealand, and postcolonial literary analysis.

Book Multiliteracy Centers

Download or read book Multiliteracy Centers written by David Michael Sheridan and published by Hampton Press (NJ). This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, colleges and universities have begun to pay significant attention to "multimodal rhetoric" --rhetoric that uses not just words, but a wide range of compositional elements, including still images, moving images, charts, graphs, illustrations, animations, layout schemes, colors, music, ambient noises, and other media components. This book explores how multimodal rhetoric may prompt foundational changes in writing centers, which have proven themselves, over the last several decades, to be a highly effective means of providing peer-based support for writers. Bringing together the insights and experiences of ten researcher-practitioners working in a diverse range of institutional contexts, the chapters collected here explore the transformations potentially involved in this shift to multimodality, including changes in the way centers configure space, the way they allocate resources, the way they train peer consultants, and the way they interact with other units on campus and with communities beyond campus. Theoretical exploration is balanced with discussions of pragmatic concerns that emerge from contributors' lived experiences. To confront the intellectual and practical challenges of integrating multimodal rhetoric into writing center work, contributors draw not only on writing center theory and the broader field of composition and rhetoric, but also on an eclectic mix of theoretical frameworks taken from other fields, including actor network theory, design, and property law. --Book Jacket.
