Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first booklength account of how Maurice Merleau-Ponty used certain texts by Alfred North Whitehead to develop an ontology based on nature, and how he could have used other Whitehead texts that he did not know in order to complete his last ontology. This account is enriched by several of Merleau-Ponty's unpublished writings not previously available in English, by the first detailed treatment of certain works by F.W.J. Schelling in the course of showing how they exerted a substantial influence on both Merleau-Ponty and Whitehead, and by the first extensive discussion of Merleau-Ponty's interest in the Stoics's notion of the twofold logos—the logos endiathetos and the logos proforikos. This book provides a thorough exploration of the consonance between these two philosophers in their mutual desire to overcome various bifurcations of nature, and of nature from spirit, that continued to haunt philosophy and science since the 17th-century.

Book Merleau Ponty Whitehead

Download or read book Merleau Ponty Whitehead written by Franck Robert and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2011 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Deep Postmodernism

Download or read book Deep Postmodernism written by Jerry H. Gill and published by Humanities Press International. This book was released on 2010 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a winning and accessible critique of postmodernist philosophy. Postmodernism is a term used to describe a contemporary school of philosophy that takes a highly critical stance toward the conceptual underpinnings of the modern worldview. In this critical assessment of postmodernism, philosopher Jerry Gill argues that, however insightful the critiques of the postmodernists, they did little or nothing to offer constructive approaches to overcoming the impasse their criticism of modernism created. Instead, he turns to an earlier generation of 20th century philosophers - Alfred Whitehead, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Michael Polanyi - who anticipated later postmodern trends but offered alternative approaches to the dilemmas of modernism regarding the nature of reality, knowledge, and language

The most respected scholars in the field—George Allan, Lisa Bellantoni, John B. Cobb Jr., Frederick Ferré, David L. Hall, William S. Hamrick, Robert Cummings Neville, Janusz A. Polanowski, Patrick Shade, and Donald W. Sherburne—illustrate points of connection between Whitehead's ideas to the following: Descartes, the so-called "Father of Modern Philosophy"; classical American thought; several contemporary American thinkers, including Richard Rorty and Alasdair MacIntyre; aspects of European philosophy; and current reflections upon the environment and technology.

Book excerpt: "This is a project that attempts to trace out a contemporary conciliation between the modern science and humanism--constituents of nature which Alfred North Whitehead (1938/1958) despairingly has found have been kept separated. Book Whitehead and Continental Philosophy in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Whitehead and Continental Philosophy in the Twenty First Century written by Jeremy D. Fackenthal and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-04-29 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead, a speculative philosopher from the first half of the twentieth century, converses and entangles itself with continental philosophers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries around the question of a sustainable civilization in the present. Chapters are focused around economic and environmental sustainability, questions of how technology and systems relate to this sustainability, relationships between human and nonhuman entities, relationships among humans, and how larger philosophical questions lead one to think differently about what the terms sustainable and civilization mean. The book aims to uncover and explore ways in which the combination of these philosophies might provide the “dislocations” within thought that lead to novel ways of being and acting in the world.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Process Philosophy and Organization Studies

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Process Philosophy and Organization Studies written by Jenny Helin and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 731 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Process approaches to organization studies focus on flow, activities, and evolution, understanding organizations and organizing as processes in the making. They stand in contrast to positivist approaches that see organizations and phenomena as fixed, static, and measurable. Process approaches draw on a range of ideas and philosophies. The Handbook examines 34 philosophers and social theorists, both those commonly linked to process thinking, such as Whitehead, Bergson and James, and those that are not as often addressed from a process perspective such as Dilthey and Tarde. Each chapter addresses the background and context of this thinker, their work (with a focus on the processual elements), and the potential contribution to organization and management research. For students and scholars in the field of Organization Studies this book is an entry point into the work of philosophical thinkers and social theorists for whom the world is far from being a solid place.

Book The Fate of Place

    Book Details:
  • Author : Edward Casey
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2013-05-13
  • ISBN : 0520954564
  • Pages : 507 pages

Download or read book The Fate of Place written by Edward Casey and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this imaginative and comprehensive study, Edward Casey, one of the most incisive interpreters of the Continental philosophical tradition, offers a philosophical history of the evolving conceptualizations of place and space in Western thought. Not merely a presentation of the ideas of other philosophers, The Fate of Place is acutely sensitive to silences, absences, and missed opportunities in the complex history of philosophical approaches to space and place. A central theme is the increasing neglect of place in favor of space from the seventh century A.D. onward, amounting to the virtual exclusion of place by the end of the eighteenth century. Casey begins with mythological and religious creation stories and the theories of Plato and Aristotle and then explores the heritage of Neoplatonic, medieval, and Renaissance speculations about space. He presents an impressive history of the birth of modern spatial conceptions in the writings of Newton, Descartes, Leibniz, and Kant and delineates the evolution of twentieth-century phenomenological approaches in the work of Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, Bachelard, and Heidegger. In the book's final section, Casey explores the postmodern theories of Foucault, Derrida, Tschumi, Deleuze and Guattari, and Irigaray.

Book The World on Edge

  • Author : Edward S. Casey
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press

Download or read book The World on Edge written by Edward S. Casey and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of continental philosophy's most distinctive voices comes a creative contribution to spatial studies, environmental philosophy, and phenomenology. Edward S. Casey identifies how important edges are to us, not only in terms of how we perceive our world, but in our cognitive, artistic, and sociopolitical attentions to it. We live in a world that is constantly on edge, yet edges as such are rarely explored. Casey systematically describes the major and minor edges that configure the human and other-than-human realms, including our everyday experience. He also explores edges in high- stakes situations, such as those that emerge in natural disasters, moments of political and economic upheaval, and encroaching climate change. Casey's work enables a more lucid understanding of the edge-world that is a necessary part of living in a shared global environment.
