Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an attempt to bring discussions about West Papua back to the fore this project first argues that self- determination has never been realized in West Papua, thus making the United Nations' attempt at ending colonialism there an abject failure. This is shown by recounting the history of the half-island and the means by which it was colonized by the Dutch and then forcefully re-colonized by the Indonesian state. We then look forward to ways that the fullest measure of self-determination can occur, giving the indigenous West Papuans the opportunity to choose any option of decolonization for their future, be it integration, independence, or some other status. Other status options include the possible formation of non-state entities or the complete withdrawal from the global system. This challenge to Western assumptions and regulations regarding decolonization is important as West Papua is a prime example where simply removing the colonizer and establishing a new state will not necessarily satisfy indigenous demands for decolinzation.

Book excerpt: From 1942-1945, Sofia and her family endured the cruelty of the Japanese concentration camps on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. G. Pauline Kok-Schurgers' first memoir, The Remains of War, chronicles this internment, this persecution. And when the war ends, despite years of torture and abuse, of starvation and disease, and of separation from her father, Sofia survives. And so does her family. This war ends, but the struggle is not over. The Road to Merdeka tells Sofia's story of what comes after. Though the British have liberated the Dutch from the clutches of the Japanese Army, another war has broken out in Indonesia, later known as the "Bersiap," or Indonesian National Revolution. As the island of Sumatra becomes increasingly dangerous for Sofia's family, they must flee to Holland, leaving behind the only home Sofia has ever known. Thus begins Sofia's journey to build a new home, to repair a broken family, and to find love within herself. This is Sofia's road to freedom. This is The Road to Merdeka.

Book Proselytizing and the Limits of Religious Pluralism in Contemporary Asia

Download or read book Proselytizing and the Limits of Religious Pluralism in Contemporary Asia written by Juliana Finucane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a range of critical studies that explore diverse ways in which processes of globalization pose new challenges and offer new opportunities for religious groups to propagate their beliefs in contemporary Asian contexts. Proselytizing tests the limits of religious pluralism, as it is a practice that exists on the border of tolerance and intolerance. The practice of proselytizing presupposes not only that people are freely-choosing agents and that religion itself is an issue of individual preference. At the same time, however, it also raises fraught questions about belonging to particular communities and heightens the moral stakes in involved in such choices. In many contemporary Asian societies, questions about the limits of acceptable proselytic behavior have taken on added urgency in the current era of globalization. Recognizing this, the studies brought together here serve to develop our understandings of current developments as it critically explores the complex ways in which contemporary contexts of religious pluralism in Asia both enable, and are threatened by, projects of proselytization.

Book The United Nations and the Indonesian Takeover of West Papua 1962 1969

Download or read book The United Nations and the Indonesian Takeover of West Papua 1962 1969 written by John Saltford and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of the international community in the handover of the Dutch colony of West Papua/Irian Jaya to Indonesia in the 1960s and questions whether or not the West Papuan people ever genuinely exercised the right to self-determination guaranteed to them in the UN-brokered Dutch/Indonesian agreement of 1962. Indonesian, Dutch, US, Soviet, Australian and British involvement is discussed, but particular emphasis is given to the central part played by the United Nations in the implementation of this agreement. As guarantor, the UN temporarily took over the territory's administration from the Dutch before transferring control to Indonesia in 1963. After five years of Indonesian rule, a UN team returned to West Papua to monitor and endorse a controversial act of self-determination that resulted in a unanimous vote by 1022 Papuan 'representatives' to reject independence. Despite this, the issue is still very much alive today as a crisis-hit Indonesia faces continued armed rebellion and growing calls for freedom in West Papua.

Book Indonesia s Secret War

Download or read book Indonesia s Secret War written by Robin Osborne and published by Allen & Unwin Academic. This book was released on 1985 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the historical development of the Irian Jaya guerrilla struggle for independence from Indonesia. The OPM, Organisasi Papua Merdeka, has been fighting Indonesian rule in West New Guinea since 1969; the military presence there was established in 1962. The author believes that the great majority of West Papuans support the OPM. The Indonesian Transmigration programme has forcible alienated clan land and sponsored settlers from Java. As a result of this policy 10,000 Papuans fled Irian Jaya in mid-1984 to seek safety in Papua New Guinea. The exodus was more than 1 per cent of the indigenous population. The OPM has almost no foreign allies. Both Papua New Guinea and Australia emphasize that Irian Jaya is part of Indonesia and thus an internal matter. The author predicts that greater autonomy for Irian Jaya would be more likely to result from political pressure on Jakarta than from a military victory by OPM.

Book Indonesia s Transformation and the Stability of Southeast Asia

Download or read book Indonesia s Transformation and the Stability of Southeast Asia written by Angel Rabasa and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2001-07-05 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country, is undergoing a profound transformation that could lead to a variety of outcomes, from the consolidation of democracy to return to authoritarianism or military rule, to radical Islamic rule, or to violent disintegration. The stakes are high, for Indonesia is the key to Southeast Asian security. The authors examine the trends and dynamics that are driving Indonesia's transformation, outline possible strategic futures and their implications for regional stability, and identify options the United States might pursue in the critical challenge of influencing Indonesia's future course. Steps the United States might take now include support for Indonesia's stability and territorial integrity, reestablishment of Indonesian-U.S. military cooperation and interaction, aid in rebuilding a constructive Indonesian role in regional security, and support for development of a regional crisis reaction force. A continued strong U.S. presence in the Asia-Pacific region will reinforce the U.S. role as regional balancer.
