Certainly nobody ever expected M's cat, Smith Kitten, to be literate... AND able to type! But that's exactly what Smith did. Over the course of her life (and even beyond!), Smith Kitten wrote letters to M's nephew, David, who saved most of them. Those letters, in addition to other letters saved by M, are the basis for this book. Smith provides a cat's-eye view of life with M, including stories of the Great Roaring Monster who lives in the hall closet, the Going-to-Bed Routine (in which one must jump on all squares of the quilt to ensure there are no Evil Spirits lurking within) and proper placement of the hairball, as well as d-o-g-s and other beasts.

Since the advent of social media, cats have become a topic central to online communication, and the multitude of cat-related accounts now online has made this a world-wide phenomenon. Through cat-inspired varieties of language, we have developed a genre of cat-inspired vocabulary. And on our special social media accounts for our cats, we take on their identities, as we post, write, talk, and chat - as our feline friends. This innovative book provides linguistic analyses of the cyber 'Cativerse', exploring online language variation, and explaining key linguistic concepts – all through the lens of cat-related communication. Each chapter explores a different sociolinguistic phenomena, drawing on fun and engaging examples including memes, hashtags, captions and 'LOLcats', from platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. Devastated by Fritz’s death, Judy sought to heal her grief by telling his story through her letters – and ended up writing a charming, funny, and heartbreaking memoir every cat lover will recognize and anyone who has ever loved a pet will relate to. Along the way we meet Fritz’s successors, Rascal, Tinker, Belle, and Amelia Belle, and meet Carl, Judy’s husband, soul mate, and love of her life. Loss is a big part of her book, but so is her gratitude for a life filled with love. This is a book written from the heart of a woman known for her acts of kindness and generosity. Who knew she was also a lovely writer? I’m grateful she shared this book with me. Enjoy! -Meg Smith

Book excerpt: Help your students to think critically and creatively through team-based problem solving instead of focusing on testing and outcomes. Professionals throughout the education system are recognizing that standardized testing is holding students back. Schools tend to view children as outcomes rather than as individuals who require guidance on thinking critically and creatively. Awesome Math focuses on team-based problem solving to teach discrete mathematics, a subject essential for success in the STEM careers of the future. Built on the increasingly popular growth mindset, this timely book emphasizes a problem-solving approach for developing the skills necessary to think critically, creatively, and collaboratively. In its current form, math education is a series of exercises: straightforward problems with easily-obtained answers. Problem solving, however, involves multiple creative approaches to solving meaningful and interesting problems. The authors, co-founders of the multi-layered educational organization AwesomeMath, have developed an innovative approach to teaching mathematics that will enable educators to: Move their students beyond the calculus trap to study the areas of mathematics most of them will need in the modern world Show students how problem solving will help them achieve their educational and career goals and form lifelong communities of support and collaboration Encourage and reinforce curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity in their students Get students into the growth mindset, coach math teams, and make math fun again Create lesson plans built on problem based learning and identify and develop educational resources in their schools Awesome Math: Teaching Mathematics with Problem Based Learning is a must-have resource for general education teachers and math specialists in grades 6 to 12, and resource specialists, special education teachers, elementary educators, and other primary education professionals.
