Book Meos of Mewat in the 21st Century

Download or read book Meos of Mewat in the 21st Century written by Abhay Chawla and published by Abhay Chawla. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While most of the earlier scholarship of the Meo community has focused on the community’s troubled histories, their backwardness and unusual social and religious configuration; this research—conducted over a span of five years—shines a light upon modern Meos in the twenty-first century, and their embracing of mobile technology to leapfrog into the future. With special attention given to Meo youth and women, this work engages with the lived-experience of these actors delving into their aspirations, challenges and self-devised solutions as they negotiate the structures of tradition and patriarchy. The Meo community—saddled with high levels of illiteracy and marginalization— inhabits the Mewat area of North-West India nestled between Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Their spoken language is Mewati and there are multiple conjectures put forth about their origin and continual migrations throughout history before finally settling in Mewat. Practitioners of Islam, the Meos, at the same time, observe Hindu social practices such as division into Pals and Gotras with clearly laid-down exogamous rules. Historically this has rendered the Meos as an enigma to outsiders, and as a problem for the reigning political state, from the Delhi Sultanate to the British colonizers, contributing to their marginalized status. As an oral society, the traditional Meo medium was that of the mirasi—folklore tellers and bards—who would sing about Meo valor in the face of state authority. So deeply entrenched in tradition and alterity, how do Meos then tread and engage with modern techno-centric new media? The answer to such an inquiry is not simple or straightforward. While over 90% of Meos owned a mobile phone as of 2016, different audience segments provide different narratives, and leverage the technology in different ways. College students use their mobile phones to access different social media platforms and opportunities for employment and higher education; truck drivers on the other hand use their mobiles to remain in touch with their families when out on long distance driving assignments. Meanwhile married women and young girls while not allowed to own a phone, nonetheless find ways of gaining access to the technology. With the use of new media, Bollywood consumption is on the rise, and one sees changes in sartorial choices, ideas on grooming and marriage and social life in general. So much so, the traditional profession of the mirasi has now become defunct. Present-day Meo society is experiencing a change at multiple levels which is a complex negotiation between traditional and modern. And in this twenty first-century story—empowered by technology— rather than being a ‘victim’ the Meo emerges as a ‘hero’.

Download or read book Nutritional Oncology written by George L. Blackburn and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-05-02 with total page 847 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutritional oncology is an increasingly active interdisciplinary field where cancer is investigated as both a systemic and local disease originating with the changes in the genome and progressing through a multi-step process which may be influenced at many points in its natural history by nutritional factors that could impact the prevention of cancer, the quality of life of cancer patients, and the risk of cancer recurrence in the rapidly increasing population of cancer survivors.Since the first edition of this book was published in 1999, the idea that there is a single gene pathway or single drug will provide a cure for cancer has given way to the general view that dietary/environmental factors impact the progression of genetic and cellular changes in common forms of cancer. This broad concept can now be investigated within a basic and clinical research context for specific types of cancer. This book attempts to cover the current available knowledge in this new field of nutritional oncology written by invited experts. This book attempts to provide not only the theoretical and research basis for nutritional oncology, but will offer the medical oncologist and other members of multidisciplinary groups treating cancer patients practical information on nutrition assessment and nutritional regimens, including micronutrient and phytochemical supplementation. The editors hope that this volume will stimulate increased research, education and patient application of the principles of nutritional oncology.NEW TO THIS EDITION:* Covers hot new topics of nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics in cancer cell growth * Includes new chapters on metabolic networks in cancer cell growth, nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics* Presents substantially revised chapters on breast cancer and nutrition, prostate cancer and nutrition, and colon cancer and nutrition* Includes new illustrations throughout the text, especially in the breast cancer chapter* Includes integrated insights into the unanswered questions and clearly defined objectives of research in nutritional oncology * Offers practical guidelines for clinicians advising malnourished cancer patients and cancer survivors on diet, nutrition, and lifestyle * Provides information on the role of bioactive substances, dietary supplements, phytochemicals and botanicals in cancer prevention and treatment

Book Well Test Analysis for Multilayered Reservoirs with Formation Crossflow

Download or read book Well Test Analysis for Multilayered Reservoirs with Formation Crossflow written by Hedong Sun and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well Test Analysis for Multilayered Reservoirs with Formation Crossflow introduces the fundamentals of well test analysis of a multilayered reservoir with formation crossflow. The effects of reservoir parameters on wellbore pressure and flow rate are examined, as is a proper method that has been established to analyze well test data that leads to better determinations on the reservoir parameters for each layer of the reservoir. Focusing on multilayer models for data analysis, this reference explains the reasons for the existence of single-phase crossflow in multilayer reservoirs, exploring methods to establish them and presenting practical applications to utilize and implement for today's more complex reservoirs. Aiding in better well testing operations and models, this book is a one-stop solution for today's reservoir and production engineer, helping them understand every layer of their reservoir. - Includes real-world examples of well testing through multilayered reservoirs, whether with crossflow or with formation crossflow - Provides strong guidance and criteria of research on reservoir dynamic performance, such as physical models and mathematical models - Includes a new unsteady crossflow model for vertical interference testing in low-permeability zones - Describes interpretation methods for different cases in multilayer reservoirs, including a new model called semipermeable walls for stratified reservoirs, drawdown test procedures and layer-by-layer test procedures that are useful for shales between layers

Book Handbook of Naturally Occurring Compounds V1

Download or read book Handbook of Naturally Occurring Compounds V1 written by T.K. Devon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Naturally Occurring Compounds, Volume I: Acetogenins, Shikimates, and Carbohydrates contains most of the known naturally occurring compounds and their corresponding structures, classified into acetogenins, shikimates, and carbohydrates. Each structure includes the molecular formula, molecular weight, optical rotation, melting point, literature reference, and classification number. This handbook is comprised of nine chapters and begins with an introduction to the primary classes of naturally occurring compounds to be discussed in the following chapters, namely shikimate aromatics, acetate/shikimate aromatics, acetate/malonate aromatics, acyclic and heterocyclic acetogenins, carbohydrates, and complex classes. The shikimic acid pathway is described, along with the oxygenation patterns of shikimate-derived aromatics. Compounds such as lignans, terphenyls, macrolides, and miscellaneous phenols are considered. Oxyheterocyclics related to the linear acetogenins/phenylpolyynes are also analyzed. The final chapter provides three indices in addition to the structural guides, namely, Molecular Weight Index, Molecular Formula Index, and Alphabetical Index. This volume will be a useful resource for chemists and chemistry students.

Book Why Would I Be Married Here

Download or read book Why Would I Be Married Here written by Reena Kukreja and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-15 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Would I Be Married Here? examines marriage migration undertaken by rural bachelors in North India, unable to marry locally, who travel across the breadth of India seeking brides who do not share the same caste, ethnicity, language, or customs as themselves. Combining rich ethnographic evidence with Dalit feminist and political economy frameworks, Reena Kukreja connects the macro-political violent process of neoliberalism to the micro-personal level of marriage and intimate gender relations to analyze the lived reality of this set of migrant brides in cross-region marriages among dominant-peasant caste Hindus and Meo Muslims in rural North India. Why Would I Be Married Here? reveals how predatory capitalism links with patriarchy to dispossess many poor women from India's marginalized Dalit and Muslim communities of marriage choices in their local communities. It reveals how, within the context of the increasing spread of capitalist relations, these women's pragmatic cross-region migration for marriage needs to be reframed as an exercise of their agency that simultaneously exposes them to new forms of gender subordination and internal othering of caste discrimination and ethnocentrism in conjugal communities. Why Would I Be Married Here? offers powerful examples of how contemporary forces of neoliberalism reshape the structural oppressions compelling poor women from marginalized communities worldwide into making compromised choices about their bodies, their labor, and their lives.

Book Innovations in Human Resource Management

Download or read book Innovations in Human Resource Management written by Hannah S. Sistare and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human resource management is experiencing profound change, new challenges, exciting accomplishments, and much uncertainity. The public service has moved away from the old days of "personnel management" concerned mostly with processing "personal action" paperwork, to a system where public employees are managed as human capital to get the work of the government done more effectively and efficiently. This volume brings together the latest thinking on human resource management in the public service, presented by distinguished thought leaders in the field. While it focuses primarily on federal government policies and practices, the principles, conclusions, and recommendations translate readily to state and local government, and to the private sector as well.

Book UK Communication Strategies for Afghanistan 2001 2014

Download or read book UK Communication Strategies for Afghanistan 2001 2014 written by Thomas W. Cawkwell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war in Afghanistan came to an end in 2014 after nearly thirteen years of conflict. Throughout that period, British officials have described UK operations there in various conflicting and often contradictory ways; as a counter-terrorism mission, a stabilisation mission, and a counter-narcotics mission, respectively. This book investigates how the war was ’sold’ to the British public and how Britain’s ’transnational’ foreign and defence policy impacted on the unfolding of UK strategy in Afghanistan and the way it was communicated. It argues that because the UK’s foreign and defence policy is transnationally-oriented - meaning that it is foundationally aimed at maintaining alliance with the United States and the institutional coherence of NATO - UK strategy is contingent upon collective security and, crucially, is fundamentally concerned with the means of policy (maintaining alliances) over the ends (using alliances to effect change). Explaining the inalienability of collective security systems to national security is no easy task, however, and, when faced with the adversities of Afghanistan, the UK state has since 2008 instead opted to describe the significance of Afghanistan in narrow, nation-centric, counter-terrorist concerns in order to maintain public support for collective security operations there whilst, paradoxically, framing the conflict in a manner that avoids talking about the transnational structure and purpose of the mission. This kind of ’strategic’ communication is increasingly becoming a focus of the UK state as it faces a transnational dilemma of maintaining its collective security bonds whilst facing a public increasingly sceptical of liberal interventionism.
