Book Mentally Defective Children Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mentally Defective Children Classic Reprint written by Alfred Binet and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mentally Defective Children The Binet-Simon tests of children's intelligence have been the subject of much discussion during the past few years, both in this country and in America. Much of this discussion seems to have been carried on, at times, without any knowledge of the original aim or purpose for which these tests were devised, and as if, so to speak, they were invented as a means for ascertaining the relative intellectual powers of all children, and so of affording to the teacher a ready and sure means of accurately classifying and grading the children under his charge. As a consequence, there is a tendency, in some quarters, to search for and to endeavour to establish some absolute standard or criterion of intelligence which shall be valid, irrespective of the nationality, or the class, or the particular environment of the child. It is hoped that the publication in translation of the work of Binet and Simon in which these tests first appeared, along with the complete series of tests as extended and revised during the lifetime of the former, will tend to remove this twofold misapprehension, and make the educationalist, as well as the wider public interested in social questions, acquainted with the real purpose which underlay the devisal or invention of the tests, and so enable all to perceive that their relative value, as measuring stages of intelligence, must be judged by the purpose for which they were devised. Book The Mentally Defective Child

Download or read book The Mentally Defective Child written by Meredith Young and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mentally Defective Child: Written Specially for School Teachers, and Others Interested in the Educational Treatment and After-Care of Mentally Defective School Children The question of mental deficiency, particularly as it affects school children, has quite recently assumed considerable importance. Members of Education Committees, Directors of Education, School Medical Officers, School Teachers, Members of Care or After-Care Committees, Members and Officers of Local Authorities formed under the provisions of the Mental Deficiency Act, 1913, and many others find themselves called upon to assist in discovering these sometimes difficult cases, and in devising means for their training, care and control. Though there are many excellent books written for the medical profession - from many of which indeed I have freely quoted in these pages - I do not know of any which have been specially written for the layman. The Central Association for the Care of the Mentally Defective recently inaugurated a highly successful Special Summer Course of training on this subject for School Teachers at Birmingham and, as part of this course, I was invited to give a series of short lectures on the medical aspect of the subject. Book School Training of Defective Children Classic Reprint

Download or read book School Training of Defective Children Classic Reprint written by Henry Herbert Goddard and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Training of Defective Children Whether the problems to be solved in the recognition and appropriate treatment of mentally defective children are medical, educational, or custodial, or all three combined, is a question worthy of serious consideration. It has hitherto been quite generally assumed that mentally defective children should be and could be cared for satisfactorily by the public school system. In many school systems they are now provided for in special classes; in many others such children are still found in the regular classes for normal children. Hence, for the present at least, the problems involved in the care and training of mental defectives are practically public school problems and must be dealt with from the public school point of view. Unfortunately there is a notion widely prevalent within and without the teaching profession that special attention - sometimes a little of it, sometimes a good deal - bestowed by the regular teachers, will solve the problem and will make these mentally defective children normal. How completely erroneous this notion is Dr. Goddard makes plain in the present volume. Even when mentally defective children are segregated in separate classes - as in the interest of the normal children as well as in their own interest they should be - the notion just referred to is often responsible for the regime to which they are subjected; namely, the regime, usually with some modifications, to be sure, appropriate to normal pupils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treatment and Education of Mentally Feeble Children IN considering this subject, we should bear in mind that there are usually bodily imperfections associated with the mental deficiency, and that unless the physical condition of the child is improved, no i amelioration of the mental state can be i expected. We should therefore, in the first place, use every effort to strengthen the body and alleviate its defects, and then undertake the moral and intellectual training. Book The Journal of Applied Psychology 1922 Vol 6 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Journal of Applied Psychology 1922 Vol 6 Classic Reprint written by James P. Porter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Applied Psychology, 1922, Vol. 6 The New Castle County survey by the United States Public Health Service confined itself entirely to the school children of the county and, as has been noted, gave a considerably larger percent of mentally defective and probably mentally defective children. In a number of the surveys reviewed, it is evident that there must have been a good deal of variation in the judgments of different investigators engaged in the same survey. Although the fact is not stated, it is evident that a number of investigators must have been engaged simultane ously in this survey as 3793 children were studied in four months. A part of the preliminary examination given con sisted of questions suited in a general way to the child's age and school grade, and a part of the secondary examination consisted of tests and exercises that could not help but vary a great deal in the case of different examiners when these tests and questions had not been previously standardized or were incapable of standardization. Even though the per centage quoted here is higher than some of the others, it is evident that it is too low when cases which have a chrono logical age of 15 and a mental age of or a chronological age of 14 and a mental age of are accepted as normal because so considered, in spite of the above evidence, and even though the fact that the Goddard Scale measures somewhat short for these ages is taken into consideration.
