Book The Intelligence of School Children

Download or read book The Intelligence of School Children written by Lewis Madison Terman and published by . This book was released on 1919 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book has been written for the rank and file of teachers, school supervisors, and normal-school students. Its purpose is to illustrate the large individual differences in original endowment which exist among school children and to show the practical bearing of these differences upon the everyday problems of classroom management and school administration. It does not treat, except incidentally, the psychological principles underlying intelligence tests. Some of these problems the writer has touched upon elsewhere. The technique of giving the tests of the revised Binet scale and the general significance of mental tests for education have been set forth in some detail in another volume of this series, The Measurement of Intelligence, which should be read in connection with the present volume. The writer's present aim is the more practical one of showing how the results of mental tests may be put to everyday use in the grade classification and in the educational guidance of school children"--Preface. Book Mental Tests Their History Principles and Applications

Download or read book Mental Tests Their History Principles and Applications written by Frank Nugent Freeman and published by . This book was released on 1926 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author has shown how the mental test idea was evolved out of the laboratory study of individual differences by psychologists, how the individual and then the group intelligence tests were developed, the application of statistical methods to the interpretation of the results, the creation of the different types of scales, the extension of the mental test idea in new directions, the technique and theory of the tests, the uses of the different types of mental tests, and their reliability, and has closed his treatment with two chapters on the interpretation of what the tests really measure and the nature of intelligence itself. The work of hundreds of individual investigators has been organized into a systematic treatise, and the place and work of each have been given their proper setting as parts of a great movement. The volume is accordingly offered to teachers of college and university classes in Mental Tests with confidence that it will prove as useful in this field as the texts now in use have done in the field of educational tests. Book What Intelligence Tests Miss

Download or read book What Intelligence Tests Miss written by Keith E. Stanovich and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-27 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critics of intelligence tests writers such as Robert Sternberg, Howard Gardner, and Daniel Goleman have argued in recent years that these tests neglect important qualities such as emotion, empathy, and interpersonal skills. However, such critiques imply that though intelligence tests may miss certain key noncognitive areas, they encompass most of what is important in the cognitive domain. In this book, Keith E. Stanovich challenges this widely held assumption.Stanovich shows that IQ tests (or their proxies, such as the SAT) are radically incomplete as measures of cognitive functioning. They fail to assess traits that most people associate with good thinking, skills such as judgment and decision making. Such cognitive skills are crucial to real-world behavior, affecting the way we plan, evaluate critical evidence, judge risks and probabilities, and make effective decisions. IQ tests fail to assess these skills of rational thought, even though they are measurable cognitive processes. Rational thought is just as important as intelligence, Stanovich argues, and it should be valued as highly as the abilities currently measured on intelligence tests.
