This book shows that in an attempt to provide services where there are ever increasing thresholds for access and cuts to resources, a resurgence of the ‘deserving/undeserving’ paradigm reflects a contemporary justification regarding who is 'entitled' to help and who is not. For the American health care professional, this book provides an understanding of a system of mental health care significantly different from his own. For his British counterpart, it offers some insights as to how British programs appear to a sophisticated American observer, and brings into focus a critical perspective of problems confronted, and yet to be resolved.
