Book Mental Abnormality and Deficiency

Download or read book Mental Abnormality and Deficiency written by Sidney Leavitt Pressey and published by . This book was released on 1926 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have had two major purposes, in writing this brief volume. They have, in the first place, attempted to formulate material for a college course which should give in vigorous, very direct, practical fashion acquaintance with the major problems of mental health, and mental disease and deficiency. The writers have attempted not only to outline the primarily medical and psychiatric features of these problems of mental health, but also to show their even more fundamental relations to education, and to give some realization of the frequency with which matters involving mental abnormality appear in the affairs of everyday business and professional life. The writers have, in the second place, attempted a treatment which should be of definite practical value to those interested in various special fields of work in which problems of personality and adjustment are frequently met; they have had in mind particularly social service, personnel management, work with delinquents, and those most important functionings of the school and college which involve the student's emotional and characterological development and his educational, vocational, and recreational guidance. Book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 4

Download or read book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 4 written by Vikram Patel and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders are common, highly disabling, and associated with significant premature mortality. The impact of these disorders on the social and economic well-being of individuals, families, and societies is large, growing, and underestimated. Despite this burden, these disorders have been systematically neglected, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with pitifully small contributions to scaling up cost-effective prevention and treatment strategies. Systematically compiling the substantial existing knowledge to address this inequity is the central goal of this volume. This evidence-base can help policy makers in resource-constrained settings as they prioritize programs and interventions to address these disorders.

Book Reducing Risks for Mental Disorders

Download or read book Reducing Risks for Mental Disorders written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The understanding of how to reduce risk factors for mental disorders has expanded remarkably as a result of recent scientific advances. This study, mandated by Congress, reviews those advances in the context of current research and provides a targeted definition of prevention and a conceptual framework that emphasizes risk reduction. Highlighting opportunities for and barriers to interventions, the book draws on successful models for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, injuries, and smoking. In addition, it reviews the risk factors associated with Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, alcohol abuse and dependence, depressive disorders, and conduct disorders and evaluates current illustrative prevention programs. The models and examination provide a framework for the design, application, and evaluation of interventions intended to prevent mental disorders and the transfer of knowledge about prevention from research to clinical practice. The book presents a focused research agenda, with recommendations on how to develop effective intervention programs, create a cadre of prevention researchers, and improve coordination among federal agencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributors to this volume present and discuss new data which suggest that major mental disorder substantially increases the risk of violent crime. These findings come at a crucial time, since those who suffer from mental disorders are increasingly living in the community, rather than in institutions. The book describes the magnitude and complexity of the problem and offers hope that humane, effective intervention can prevent violent crime being committed by the seriously mentally disordered.

Book Age of Onset of Mental Disorders

Download or read book Age of Onset of Mental Disorders written by Giovanni de Girolamo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-11 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a thorough and critical review of current knowledge about the age of onset of mental disorders. The opening chapters offer information about the impact of the age of onset on the clinical picture, course, and outcome of physical illnesses, and about the neurobiological implications and correlates of different ages of onset. The impact and correlates of the ages of onset of all the most important mental disorders are then discussed in detail by internationally renowned scientists. The background to the book is the recognition that a better understanding of age of onset makes it possible to estimate the lifetime risk of disorders, helps to elucidate pathogenesis, and facilitates efficient, targeted clinical management. The book will be of value for clinicians, mental health professionals, mental health researchers, epidemiologists, and different stakeholders in the mental health field.

Book Mental Disorders and Disabilities Among Low Income Children

Download or read book Mental Disorders and Disabilities Among Low Income Children written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children living in poverty are more likely to have mental health problems, and their conditions are more likely to be severe. Of the approximately 1.3 million children who were recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits in 2013, about 50% were disabled primarily due to a mental disorder. An increase in the number of children who are recipients of SSI benefits due to mental disorders has been observed through several decades of the program beginning in 1985 and continuing through 2010. Nevertheless, less than 1% of children in the United States are recipients of SSI disability benefits for a mental disorder. At the request of the Social Security Administration, Mental Disorders and Disability Among Low-Income Children compares national trends in the number of children with mental disorders with the trends in the number of children receiving benefits from the SSI program, and describes the possible factors that may contribute to any differences between the two groups. This report provides an overview of the current status of the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders, and the levels of impairment in the U.S. population under age 18. The report focuses on 6 mental disorders, chosen due to their prevalence and the severity of disability attributed to those disorders within the SSI disability program: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, learning disabilities, and mood disorders. While this report is not a comprehensive discussion of these disorders, Mental Disorders and Disability Among Low-Income Children provides the best currently available information regarding demographics, diagnosis, treatment, and expectations for the disorder time course - both the natural course and under treatment.
