Das anvisierte Ziel, den philosophischen Hintergrund der aristotelischen Biologie verstandlich zu machen und Aristoteles als empirischen Naturforscher zu wuerdigen, ist erreicht worden. Als besondere Verdienste des Buches sind die Dokumentation des Reichtums der aristotelischen Naturwissenschaft sowie ihre Entlastung vom Vorwurf der Antiquiertheit zu betrachten.o Zeitschrift fuer philosophische Forschung oOverall, this is an important contribution to the study of both Aristotle's philosophy and ancient science [a] this volume challenges the reader to consider new approaches to seemingly intractable and tedious problems in Aristotelian scholarship. And the best of these papers show indubitably that it is necessary to study the biological works in order to understand Aristotle's methods and concerns.o Journal of Hellenistic Studies.

Book Anthropologische Differenz und animalische Konvenienz

Download or read book Anthropologische Differenz und animalische Konvenienz written by Tobias Davids and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines Thomas Aquinas’s contribution to the systematic field of animal philosophy. It applies various models from the current philosophical debate (especially from that concerning the mind of animals) as interpretative aids to tap the potential of the Thomistic approach. Thomas draws a clear line of demarcation between animals and human beings (= anthropological difference). However, he also considers it important to work out the similarities between humans and animals, insofar as they are both so-called animalia, i.e., living beings possessing senses (= animal conformance). His philosophical deliberations concerning animals have a methodological function as well, namely to highlight the distinct capacities of human beings. Thus, for Thomas, the reflection on animals is a key instrument in dealing with anthropological questions.

Book Animals and Early Modern Identity

Download or read book Animals and Early Modern Identity written by PiaF. Cuneo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animals were everywhere in the early modern period and they impacted, at least in some way, the lives of every kind of early modern person, from the humblest peasant to the greatest prince. Artists made careers based on depicting them. English gentry impoverished themselves spending money on them. Humanists exercised their scholarship writing about them. Pastors saved souls delivering sermons on them. Nobles forged alliances competing with them. Foreigners and indigenes negotiated with one another through trading them. The nexus between animal-human relationships and early modern identity is illuminated in this volume by the latest research of international scholars working on the history of art, literature, and of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Germany, France, England, Spain, and South Africa. Collectively, these essays investigate how animals - horses, dogs, pigs, hogs, fish, cattle, sheep, birds, rhinoceroses, even sea-monsters and other creatures - served people in Europe, England, the Americas, and Africa to defend, contest or transcend the boundaries of early modern identities. Developments in the methodologies employed by scholars to interrogate the past have opened up an intellectual and discursive space for - and a concomitant recognition of - the study of animals as a topic that significantly elucidates past and present histories. Relevant to a considerable array of disciplines, the study of animals also provides a means to surmount traditional disciplinary boundaries through processes of dynamic interchange and cross-fertilization.

Book Homo animal nobilissimum

Download or read book Homo animal nobilissimum written by Theodor W. Köhler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 1002 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with the philosophical approach of thirteenth-century masters to concrete, practical manifestations of 'quantum ad naturalia' in human lives in their commentaries on Aristotle’s works on natural philosophy, both his genuine works and those then considered genuine. It inquires into what they deemed worthy of philosophical debate regarding this topic and how they tackled it. The first of the two volumes describes the cultural surroundings, the scholars’ way of approaching the topic, and their discourses on the peculiarity (singularity, unity, consistency) of humankind and on its internal differentiation according to gender, stage of life, social stratification, and differences due to ethnic status or geographic (climatic) diversity. This is the first comprehensive source-based study of the subject; it draws heavily on unedited texts.

Book Narratives of Risk Narrative des Risikos

Download or read book Narratives of Risk Narrative des Risikos written by Karen Patrick Knutsen and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narratives of Risk: Interdisciplinary Studies is the result of an international project involving authors from institutions of higher education in Denmark, Greece, Malta and Norway. Twenty-one contributions, partly in German and partly in English, discuss stories of risk circulating within different fields of research: linguistics, translation studies, comparative literature, rhetoric, education, theology, psychology, sociology and political science. The concept of risk is multi-faceted. As these articles illustrate, stories can be about risk, but they can also be risky in themselves. For example, a technical manual can help people avoid dangerous situations; however, a faulty translation can lead to injury or even death. Likewise, a novel for young adults can persuade them to avoid risky behavior, while another may actually encourage them to take chances.

Book Metaphysical Conversations and Phenomenological Essays

Download or read book Metaphysical Conversations and Phenomenological Essays written by Hedwig Conrad-Martius and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first translation into English of early phenomenologist Hedwig Conrad-Martius’ Metaphysical Conversations, originally published in 1921. Conrad-Martius was one of Husserl’s first students, an important part of the Göttingen Phenomenology Circle and mentor to Edith Stein, Jean Héring, and other early phenomenologists. The present volume provides the full German and English texts of the conversations, a phenomenological discussion of the nature of the human, examining the nature of body, soul, and spirit, and drawing distinctions between plants, animals, humans, and various other beings. The volume also includes two important essays on phenomenology, in which Conrad-Martius distinguishes between the phenomenological approaches of Husserl, Heidegger, and the more ontological approach of the Göttingen school of phenomenology. She is critical of Husserl’s "transcendental" and Heidegger’s "existential" approach. The conversations illustrate her use of the phenomenological method for fundamental investigations into the nature (or Wesen) of things.

Book Keywords for Marxist Art History Today

Download or read book Keywords for Marxist Art History Today written by Larne Abse Gogarty and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mood of systemic crisis that has marked the early 21st century has been accompanied by an upsurge in Marxist thought in a whole range of domains and extends to art history. In this volume 19 scholars from different generations, different national contexts and with different relationships to Marxism reflect on the status of 18 "keywords" with special pertinence to Marxist art-historical inquiry today. Starting point of the researches was the knowledge that while certain keywords have been crucial to recent developments in Marxist art history and cultural theory more broadly, others seem to have slipped out of view. The scholars are not so much interested in the "historical semantics" of words – although that plays some role in the essays – as in the present state of Marxist art history.
