Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many different disciplines are analyzing the impact of music today. How and why this ancient cultural asset molds, empowers and makes use of us can only become apparent in a synopsis and exchange involving scientific research. With this perspective as its foundation, the conference "Mozart and Science" extended invitations to the first interdisciplinary and international dialogue between the social and physical sciences about the effects of music. This book is based on the results of that congress. It contains contributions penned by leading scientists from around the world belonging to diverse music science disciplines and in particular covers psycho-physiological, neuro-developmental and cognitive aspects associated with the experience of music. Additional essays provide insights into research conducted about how music is applied in therapy and medicine.

Book excerpt: Multimedia experiments are everywhere in contemporary art, but the collaboration and conflict associated with multimedia is not a new phenomenon. From opera to the symphonic poem to paintings inspired by music, many attempts have been made to pair sounds with pictures and to combine the arts of time and space. Counterpoints explores this artistic evolution from ancient times to the present day. The book’s main focus is music and its relationship with painting, sculpture, and architecture. Philippe Junod draws on theoretical and practical examples to show how different art movements throughout history have embraced or rejected creative combinations. He explains how the Renaissance, neoclassicism, and certain brands of modernism tried to claim the purity of each mode of expression, while other movements such as romanticism, symbolism, and surrealism called for a fusion of the arts. Counterpoints is a unique cultural history, one that provides a critical understanding of a popular but previously unheralded art form.

Book The Joyful Science Bilingual English German Edition

Download or read book The Joyful Science Bilingual English German Edition written by Friedrich Nietzsche and published by Newcomb Livraria Press. This book was released on with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new 2023 translation into American English from the original manuscript of Nietzsche's 1882 "Die fröhliche Wissenschaft". This is sometimes translated as "The Gay Science" or "The Happy Science" or "The Joyful Wisdom". This edition is bilingual- the original text is included in the back as reference material behind the English translation. This is volume 5 in The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche from Newcomb Livraria Press. This chronological, systematic set of Nietzsche's works is the first ever bilingual "Hauptwerke" or complete major works of Nietzsche published in English & the original German. The Joyful Science is perhaps his clearest explanation of his Epistemology in relation to his entire philosophic project. Here he writes about the Tautology of Anti-Metaphysical positions, for the very impetuous of them is rooted in Metaphysical assumptions (namely, that objective truth matters at all). Nietzsche’s megalomania begins to bloom in the Joyful Science, taking full form in The Twilight of the Idols. He continues his philosophy of negation and takes on every figure of western philosophy individually, and sometimes in pairs and groups. Christianity, he calls “a permanent suicide of reason” but also for the first time he talks about how the very preoccupation with truth has it’s origin in the “peasant morality” of Christianity.

Book Music Masculinity and the Claims of History

Download or read book Music Masculinity and the Claims of History written by Ian Biddle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to think of Western Art music - and the Austro-German contribution to that repertory - as a tradition? How are men and masculinities implicated in the shaping of that tradition? And how is the writing of the history (or histories) of that tradition shaped by men and masculinities? This book seeks to answer these and other questions by drawing both on a wide range of German-language writings on music, sound and listening from the so-called long nineteenth century (circa 1800-1918), and a range of critical-theoretical texts from the post-war continental philosophical and psychoanalytic traditions, including Lacan, Zizek, Serres, Derrida and Kittler. The book is focussed in particular on bringing the object of historical writing itself into scrutiny by engaging in what Zizek has called a 'historicity' or a way of writing about the past that not merely acknowledges the ahistorical kernel of historical writing, but brings that kernel into the light of day, takes account of it and puts it into play. The book is thus committed to a kind of historical writing that is open-ended - though not ideologically naïve - and that does not fix or stabilize the nature of the relationship between so-called 'primary' and 'secondary' texts. The book consists of an introduction, which places the study of classical music and the Austro-German tradition within broader debates about the value of that tradition, and four extensive case studies: an analysis of the cultural-historical category of listening around 1800; a close reading of A. B. Marx's Beethoven monograph of 1859; a consideration of Heinrich Schenker's attitudes to the mob and the vernacular more broadly and an examination, through Franz Kafka, of the figure of Mahler's body.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges of a complex and volatile world require solutions that reconcile divergent perspectives and interests. In schools, interdisciplinarity has been integrated within curricula for decades, yet it is rarely applied as a collaborative practice. Communication between different fields of research is not enough. Without meaningful collaboration, opportunities to connect are lost, and teachers and students fail to benefit from the experience of lived interdisciplinarity. A new periodical, entitled EDU:TRANSVERSAL, presents the latest findings of national and international transversal research as well as the state of the art of interdisciplinarity in didactics. The aim of this annual publication is to stimulate a transversal turn in education.

Book Musical Practice as a Form of Life

Download or read book Musical Practice as a Form of Life written by Eva-Maria Houben and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is musical practice connected with everyday life? Eva-Maria Houben shows that performing music as an activity - indeed, as playing - is a meaningful shift from an approach based on structural analysis. Musical practice, Eva-Maria Houben contends, can be understood as open and never finished. Such an emphasis on repetition offers freedom from perfection, productivity, and purpose, thus allowing meaning to unfold in specific situations, places, and relationships. Musical practice can become a form of life and a reality in its own right. The study includes musical examples from the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries as well as contemporary music.
