Book Interactions between Animals and Humans in Graeco Roman Antiquity

Download or read book Interactions between Animals and Humans in Graeco Roman Antiquity written by Thorsten Fögen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeen contributions to this volume, written by leading experts, show that animals and humans in Graeco-Roman antiquity are interconnected on a variety of different levels and that their encounters and interactions often result from their belonging to the same structures, ‘networks’ and communities or at least from finding themselves together in a certain setting, context or environment – wittingly or unwittingly. Papers explore the concrete categories of interaction between animals and humans that can be identified, in what contexts they occur, and what types of evidence can be productively used to examine the concept of interactions. Articles in this volume take into account literary, visual, and other types of evidence. A comprehensive research bibliography is also provided.

Book Anthropologische Differenz und animalische Konvenienz

Download or read book Anthropologische Differenz und animalische Konvenienz written by Tobias Davids and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines Thomas Aquinas’s contribution to the systematic field of animal philosophy. It applies various models from the current philosophical debate (especially from that concerning the mind of animals) as interpretative aids to tap the potential of the Thomistic approach. Thomas draws a clear line of demarcation between animals and human beings (= anthropological difference). However, he also considers it important to work out the similarities between humans and animals, insofar as they are both so-called animalia, i.e., living beings possessing senses (= animal conformance). His philosophical deliberations concerning animals have a methodological function as well, namely to highlight the distinct capacities of human beings. Thus, for Thomas, the reflection on animals is a key instrument in dealing with anthropological questions.

Book Animal Rights and the Hebrew Bible

Download or read book Animal Rights and the Hebrew Bible written by Saul M. Olyan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the Hebrew Bible ascribe an implicit form of legal personhood or legal rights to animals? If so, which animals--domesticated or wild, or both--receive which rights, and for what purpose? Scholars have been slow to consider these questions, and animal-oriented research as a whole, in the field of biblical studies. For the first time, author Saul M. Olyan addresses these questions in detail and explores how the evidence of the Hebrew Bible might contribute to contemporary debates about animal rights in the academy, in the courts, in the public square, and in religious communities. In this book, Olyan demonstrates that seven different biblical texts extend both legal personhood and rights to animals. The rights conferred upon them are mainly specific and situational, and the legal personhood associated them is in most cases best characterized as limited. Nonetheless, he argues that the animal rights described by these texts are genuine because they are not contingent on the needs or demands of others, they do not disappear or give way because of conflict with the interests of another legal person, and they may not be violated with impunity. Finally, Olyan considers how the biblical texts examined in his analyses might be used to extend or strengthen the arguments of those advocating for animals in judicial, academic, political, or religious settings.

  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Tue Greenfort written by Tue Greenfort and published by Sternberg Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With playful certainty, Greenfort uses detailed interventions, subtle alterations and imperceptible influences on functional processes to test "man's freedom." The processes remain intact, unchanged, yet the interventions reveal opportunities which are there to be taken. This lightness of touch allows an opposition that eschews the pompous political gesture by focusing again and again on aesthetic or playful elements. In this sense, Greenfort's work is political, but it never lets its political content become its main aim. Everything always stays the same, but slightly different. --Maria Muhle Tue Greenfort's art evokes a world in which animals, humans, nature, culture, science, and industry, as well as the artwork and its site, are connected by a web of complex relationships. In all of his works the Danish artist demonstrates an interest in an expanded notion of ecology, one that encompasses cultural history and sociopolitics as well as natural resources. This first monographic book contains an essay by the renowned scientist Jesper Hoffmeyer on biosemiotics, as well as a text by Maria Muhle which discusses the artist's work in relation to biopolitics. It was published on the occasion of Greenfort's solo exhibition at Witte de With, 24 June - 6 August 2006. Contributors Jesper Hoffmeyer, Maria Muhle, interview by Zo Gray

Book A Taste for Purity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julia Hauser
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2023-12-05
  • ISBN : 0231557000
  • Pages : 235 pages

Download or read book A Taste for Purity written by Julia Hauser and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In nineteenth-century Europe and North America, an organized vegetarian movement began warning of the health risks and ethical problems of meat eating. Presenting a vegetarian diet as a cure for the social ills brought on by industrialization and urbanization, this movement idealized South Asia as a model. In colonial India, where diets were far more varied than Western admirers realized, new motives for avoiding meat also took hold. Hindu nationalists claimed that vegetarianism would cleanse the body for anticolonial resistance, and an increasingly militant cow protection movement mobilized against meat eaters, particularly Muslims. Unearthing the connections among these developments and many others, Julia Hauser explores the global history of vegetarianism from the mid-nineteenth century to the early Cold War. She traces personal networks and exchanges of knowledge spanning Europe, the United States, and South Asia, highlighting mutual influence as well as the disconnects of cross-cultural encounters. Hauser argues that vegetarianism in this period was motivated by expansive visions of moral, physical, and even racial purification. Adherents were convinced that society could be changed by transforming the body of the individual. Hauser demonstrates that vegetarians in India and the West shared notions of purity, which drew some toward not only internationalism and anticolonialism but also racism, nationalism, and violence. Finding preoccupations with race and masculinity as well as links to colonialism and eugenics, she reveals the implication of vegetarian movements in exclusionary, hierarchical projects. Deeply researched and compellingly argued, A Taste for Purity rewrites the history of vegetarianism on a global scale.

Book Homo animal nobilissimum

Download or read book Homo animal nobilissimum written by Theodor W. Köhler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 1002 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with the philosophical approach of thirteenth-century masters to concrete, practical manifestations of 'quantum ad naturalia' in human lives in their commentaries on Aristotle’s works on natural philosophy, both his genuine works and those then considered genuine. It inquires into what they deemed worthy of philosophical debate regarding this topic and how they tackled it. The first of the two volumes describes the cultural surroundings, the scholars’ way of approaching the topic, and their discourses on the peculiarity (singularity, unity, consistency) of humankind and on its internal differentiation according to gender, stage of life, social stratification, and differences due to ethnic status or geographic (climatic) diversity. This is the first comprehensive source-based study of the subject; it draws heavily on unedited texts.

Book Technology in Modern German History

Download or read book Technology in Modern German History written by Karsten Uhl and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People often associate postwar Germany with technology and with its products of mass consumption, such as luxury cars. Even pop music, most notably Kraftwerk (literally 'power station') with songs such as Autobahn, Radioactivity or We are the Robots, disseminates the stereotype of a close link between German culture and technology. Technology in Modern German History explores various forms of technology in 200 years of German history and explains how technology has been fundamental to the shaping of modern Germany. The book investigates the role technology played in transforming Germany's culture, society and politics during the 19th and 20th centuries. Key topics covered include the different stages of industrialization, the growth of networked cities, and the triumph of a teleological narrative of technology as progress. Moreover, it provides a critical revision of the history of high technology which reveals how high-tech euphoria determined certain paths in history regardless of whether the respective technology proved to be successful. In its second part, the volume introduces new avenues in scholarship. Karsten Uhl examines neglected areas, such as rural technologies or the often-overlooked importance of everyday technologies: How did consumers or workers use new technologies? How did they appropriate and modify them? Lastly, the book considers the final decades of the 20th century and asks if they provided a significant new quality of technological change: To what degree and effects did computerization transform professional and private life in Germany? In culture and politics, reinforced by the German variety of environmentalism, the idea of progress was challenged, as the once prevailing vision of progress gave way to new apprehensions of uncertainty evident to this day. Technology in Modern German History brings fascinating insight into a much neglected area of German history for students and scholars alike.
