Book Introduction to Old Order and Conservative Mennonite Groups

Download or read book Introduction to Old Order and Conservative Mennonite Groups written by Stephen Scott and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells a story which until now has not been available in such an interesting and comprehensive form. What holds these people together? Why are they growing in number? Where do they live? The Old Order Mennonites are less well known than the Amish, but are similar in many beliefs and practices. Some Old Order Mennonites drive horses and buggies. Others use cars for transportation. Conservative Mennonite groups vary a great deal, but in general espouse strong faith and family life and believe that how they live should distinguish them from the larger society around them. The author details courtship and wedding practices, methods of worship, dress, transportation, and vocation. Never before has there been such an inside account of these people and their lives. The author spent years conferring and interviewing members of the various groups, trying to portray their history and their story in a fair and accurate manner. An enjoyable, educational, inspiring book.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mennonite Yearbook and Directory, 1952, Vol. 43 In the passing of George M. Hostetler, the church lost another faithful leader. He served for eleven years as minister of the Holly Grove Mennonite Church, Westover, Md., and for over eighteen years as bishop. In July, 1914, he was ordained to the ministry at Oyster Point, Va., where he served the Providence Mennonite Church until September, 1922. He then moved to westover, -md., where he served the Holly Grove Mennonite Church with Amos Ogburn, Aaron Mast, and Roy Payne under the oversight of John S. Mast. On Sept. 17, 1933, he was ordained by John S. Mast to the office of bishop at Holly Grove, where he served until his death. He was born Dec. 2, 1883, near Allensville, Pa and died Dec. 22, 1951, at the Peninsula General Hospital, Salisbury, Md. He grew to manhood near West Liberty, Ohio. On Oct. 31, 1901, he had a very clear conversion experience. On Sept. 5, 1911, he married Mary Belle Smucker. They spent the first year of their married life at Hesston, Kans. Following this they spent about a year and a half at the Canton Mennonite Mission, Canton, Ohio. Ten children were born into the home. Brother George was of an unassuming disposition, always kind and considerate of others, a wise counselor, a sympathetic friend to all, and leader of his people. He never was so taken up with material things that he could not lay them aside to give counsel, sympathy, comfort, or whatever was needed to help others. His words and life gave courage and strength to many. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Creation and the Environment

Download or read book Creation and the Environment written by Calvin Redekop and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen a shift in the belief that a religious world-view, specifically a Christian one, precludes a commitment to environmentalism. Whether as "stewards of God's creation" or champions of "environmental justice," church members have increasingly found that a strong pro-ecology stand on environmental issues is an integral component of their faith. But not all Christian denominations are latecomers to the issue of environmentalism. In Creation and the EnvironmentCalvin W. Redekop and his co-authors explain the unique environmental position of the Anabaptists, in particular the Mennonites. After a brief survey of the major forces contributing to the word's present ecological crisis, Creation and the Environment explores the uniquely Anabaptist view of our relationship to what they see as the created order. In rural Amish and Mennonite communities, they explain, the environment—especially the "land"—is considered part of the Kingdom God plans to establish on earth. In this view, the creation is part of the divine order, with the redemption of humankind inextricably linked to the redemption and restoration of the material world. The well-being a purpose of creation and human history are thus seen as completely interdependent.
