Book excerpt: Although the story of the religious life of the Mennonites may be told in few words, yet they have been the founders of the first German colony in America and have been among the pioneers in many of the frontier settlements in the westward expansion of the American people. And for this reason their history is of interest also to the student of general American history. I have attempted therefore to trace in this volume not only the history of the Mennonite church but also the complete life story of the Mennonite people, and have treated such phases of the subject as I could find material for. I have attempted further to cover the entire field of American Mennonite history and have tried to place every event of importance in its proper perspective. So far as possible I have tried to be impartial toward the various branches of the church and have given each the amount of space which according to my judgment is importance deserved. --from the Introduction

Book Sketches From Church History for Mennonite Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sketches From Church History for Mennonite Schools Classic Reprint written by Cornelius H. Wedel and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches From Church History for Mennonite Schools The purpose of this little volume is to offer not what the pupil should hear in his classes, nor what the teacher should know, but what the former should learn and take with him from school and should use as a nucleus around which to gather further knowledge. Because of the fact that only a short time can be devoted to this study in school, it is self-evident that the amount of matter presented must be very limited. The teacher should let the class read each new paragraph and should explain such words and sentences as are not understood by the pupils. Then the pupils should close their books while the teacher enlarges upon the subject-matter of the text-book. This method will naturally arouse the interest of the pupils. The teacher, however, must guard against presenting too much outside matter. During the following recitation period he must expect the pupils to know what is given in the text-book. If they can give anything definite of what he added, they should be especially commended. It is scarcely necessary to warn against a discussion of the peculiarities distinguishing the various branches of our denomination. For that reason every occasion for such discussion has been avoided in this book. Short devotional meditations and applications are appropriate. They, however, will make deeper impressions if they are presented orally by the teacher instead of being read out of the text-book. We hope that this little volume will prove helpful in our schools. Book The History of the General Conference of the Mennonite Church of North America Vol 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the General Conference of the Mennonite Church of North America, Vol. 2 The first volume covered about thirty-six years, while this one covers about forty years from 1896 to 1935. While this is a somewhat longer period than the first, the size of this second volume is necessarily larger than the first because of the growth and expansion of Conference activities, which growth can also be seen from the constantly increasing size of the triennial Con ference reports, which form the chief source material of this book. Large parts of this have been embodied in this volume, especially reports of Boards and Committees, which makes it especially valuable as a reference book. Not only the Conference officers but also other Conference workers are in constant need of such records. And in view of the fact that the triennial reports of the Conference are not in all homes, and even where they are, they are often not filed away for ready use, this book should be in every home and library. C. E. Societies are in great need of such reference material. As it is now, they often have to write to the officers or the Boards for information, as I can testify from my 25 years' experience as secretary of one of the Boards. This book will undoubtedly be a great help in this direction. Consequently. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Reformed Mennonite Church

Download or read book The Reformed Mennonite Church written by Daniel Musser and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Mennonite Church: Its Rise and Progress, With Its Principles and Doctrines It is necessary to say much, by way of preface, to the following work, further than to give a short explanation of the motives which led to its undertaking. Knowing that but few readers would agree with me in sentiment, and that I have not the ability to produce a work which would bear criticism, as a literary production, together with the disadvantage of being much interrupted by other duties, has made the labor one of much anxiety, and caused it to be attended with many discouragements. The idea of such an undertaking never occurred to me, until it was suggested to me by others, to whose solicitations I was induced to accede. Much advantage would have accrued, if the work had been engaged in only a few years earlier. Those who organized the Church, with all their associates, have been gathered to their fathers, and of those who were intimate with them in life, few are remaining, and they fast passing away. The younger members of the Church, who have not had acquaintance with the circumstances which brought about the forming of themselves into church order by these reformers, naturally felt a desire to have-some reliable history of these events, so that after the departure of the few yet remaining who have knowledge of it, they would be able to refute any unfounded assertions or reports which might be originated. This desire seemed so reasonable, and I may say commendable, that I felt myself constrained to endeavor to gratify it to the extent of my ability. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Bethel Mennonite Church, 1947-1972 To all of the above sources I am deeply indebted. To all who gave their time for reflection or for reading the manuscript, I say Thank you. To the members of the Historical Committee, to Pastor Bartel, and to the many who gave their support with ex pressions of interest and encouragement I am most grateful. To Raymond Harnly, for supplying several of the photographs, I am also grateful. To Mrs. Esther Whitely, my colleague at Millersville, I wish to express my thanks for her most helpful assistance in editing the manuscript. A special word of appreciation is extended to Dr. Solomon E. Yoder, the sole surviving member of the original local planning committee, and therefore, in a sense, the patriarch of the congregation. Although, until recently, only an associate member, Dr. Yoder has been a moving spirit, not only as a capable Sunday School teacher, but as a faithful member who has been serv ing the congregation in innumerable ways. His knowledge of the early years and his financial assistance in the publication of this history is deeply appreciated. Book History of the Mennonites of Butler County Ohio Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Mennonites of Butler County Ohio Classic Reprint written by W. H. Grubb and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Mennonites of Butler County, Ohio Long ago, the wise man said "of the making of many books there is no end." Of the making of history the same may be said. Every day and deed is a part of future history, and from her pages speak events, experiences and deeds. One of the chief difficulties which Mennonite historians have found in their efforts to write the story of their people is the fact that material for such a task is very meagre, since the church has in the past, in many localities, neglected to keep records of their church activities. If each church or settlement had kept a record of its activities, the writing of a complete Mennonite history would be an easy matter. The author has endeavored to record the facts of the Butler county settlement while it was still possible to secure at least sufficient information to write a connected story. It has been indeed no easy task to go back ninety-six years and gather facts and dates of the life and work of those who have long since passed away. The work of this volume has been made possible by the family bibles, diarys and family traditions placed in my hands by many interested friends, and I here desire to express my gratitude and appreciation to all who thus assisted me in this undertaking. I, therefore, place this volume in your hands as a contribution to Mennonite history, and may it be an incentive to those who follow after us, to live and preserve the faith which was so dear to our fathers, is my wish and prayer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ's Headship of the Church: According to Anabaptist Leaders Whose Followers Became Mennonites When this work was at first undertaken the question of its publication was practically foreign to the mind of the author. Even now he feels that to make it most valuable to the average reader a careful rewriting would be advantageous. Much material was laid aside which ought to appear for the benefit of those who have not entered deeply into a study of Mennonite History. On the. Other hand it has been frequently urged that the material found in this work should be made available for the use, especially of the young people, even in its present form and therefore the author has consented to have this child of his thinking to go out into the world to perform whatever work our Father in heaven may find for it. It is not without misgivings that this permission has been granted; it is, however, with the hope that those, who shall peruse its pages with care, may catch some -of the same spirit of our forefathers, which has increasingly impressed the author and has made him want to make a contribution worthy of their memory.
