Book excerpt: Excerpt from Meningitis, Sinus Thrombosis and Abscess of the Brain: With Appendices on Lumbar Puncture and Its Uses and Diseases of the Nasal Accessory Sinuses This work is written with a desire to place before the reader in a small volume a consideration of diseases which in their earlier stages often exhibit a striking similarity of symptoms, and to differentiate between them as far as may be possible. The book has exceeded the limit originally marked out for it. For example, the frequent reference to lumbar puncture in the text seemed to load inevitably to stating how normal cerebro-spinal fluid is constituted, and the changes it may undergo in disease of the central nervous system; the use of lumbar puncture as a diagnostic and therapeutic agent necessitated attention being directed to spinal anaesthesia. Similarly, diseases of the nasal accessory sinuses were so often mentioned as possible causes of cerebral abscess and sinus thrombosis that symptoms of the causal diseases required some prominence. The cases reported in this volume as it stands, and the conclusions drawn therefrom, have been principally founded on personal experience. The points advanced by the author in his address on The Surgery of the Brain and Spinal Cord, ' in 1 888, as diagnosticating large abscess in the temporo-sphenoidal lobe, have been fully borne out in several subsequent cases.
