Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Menders of the Maimed: The Anatomical and Physiological Principles Underlying the Treatment of Injuries to Muscles, Nerves, Bones and Joints I have set about my task in a way which I believe to be new. The first advance in every great curative movement is made by a single mind brooding over facts gleaned by the bedside, the experimental bench, or the dissecting table; these are the critical occasions in the history Of Medicine; on such occasions are forged the implements Of the surgeon's armamentarium. I have sought to guide the reader to the hospital wards, the physiological laboratories, the dissecting rooms, and private workrooms in which the great advances Of orthopaedic surgery were made, and to introduce to them the Menders Of the Maimed as they were in the heyday of life. In only this way, I conceive, can Medical History be written profitably. I have frankly presented my History from a British point of View. Every great medical movement sweeps over all civilised countries; we are all involved in it. Nothing will please me better than that this self-imposed task should induce colleagues in other countries to write the same history from their national point of view. The surgical problems presented by the war were new in extent, but not new in kind. The doubts which were revived were Old; the questions which urgently demanded an answer were Of ancient times. What is the rightful place of Best, Action, Massage, Bone-setting, Sprain - rubbing, Manipulative Surgery, Electricity, Heat, Cold, Counter - irritation, in our orthopaedic armamentarium? What can operative measures do - grafting, suturing, transplantation? Is the periosteum capable of forming bone? To those and many other problems I have sought to provide the materials 011 which the right answer must be based. Book Rearticulations of Orthopaedic Surgery The Process of Specialty Boundary Formation and the Provision of Fracture Care in the United States

Download or read book Rearticulations of Orthopaedic Surgery The Process of Specialty Boundary Formation and the Provision of Fracture Care in the United States written by Kenneth Gundle and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-09-21 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A focused, narrative history of orthopaedic surgery in the United States follows the field as it shifts from the use of buckles and straps to early surgery, and how orthopaedic surgeons ultimately came to dominate the treatment of fractures. While orthopaedics means 'to raise a child straight' - this book sheds light on the process of professional boundary formation that led to the modern surgical specialty. It will be of interest to orthopaedic surgeons, aspiring medical students, and those looking for a history of medicine that respects the voices of prominent figures while incorporating the multiple frames of influence that shape the past, present and future.

Book Social Histories of Disability and Deformity

Download or read book Social Histories of Disability and Deformity written by David M. Turner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collecting together essays written by an international set of contributors, this book provides an important contribution to the emerging field of disability history. It explores changes in understandings of deformity and disability between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries, and reveal the ways in which different societies have conceptualised the normal and the pathological. Through a variety of case studies including: early modern birth defects, homosexuality, smallpox scarring, vaccination, orthopaedics, deaf education, eugenics, mental deficiency, and the experiences of psychologically scarred military veterans, this book provides new perspectives on the history of physical, sensory and intellectual anomaly. Examining changes over five centuries, it charts how disability was delineated from other forms of deformity and disfigurement by a clearer medical perspective. Essays shed light on the experiences of oppressed minorities often hidden from mainstream history, but also demonstrate the importance of discourses of disability and deformity as key cultural signifiers which disclose broader systems of power and authority, citizenship and exclusion. The diverse nature of the material in this book will make it relevant to scholars interested in cultural, literary, social and political, as well as medical, history.
