Book Physical Models

Download or read book Physical Models written by Bill Addis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-11-02 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical models have been, and continue to be used by engineers when faced with unprecedented challenges, when engineering science has been non-existent or inadequate, and in any other situation when the engineer has needed to raise their confidence in a design proposal to a sufficient level to begin construction. For this reason, models have mostly been used by designers and constructors of highly innovative projects, when previous experience has not been available. The book covers the history of using of physical models in the design and development of civil and building engineering projects including bridges in the mid-18th century, William Fairbairn?s Britannia bridge in the 1840s, the masonry Aswan Dam in the 1890s, concrete dams in the 1920s, thin concrete shell roofs and the dynamic behaviour of tall buildings in earthquakes from the 1930s, tidal flow in estuaries and the acoustics of concert halls from the 1950s, and cable-net and membrane structures in the 1960s. Traditionally, progress in engineering has been attributed to the creation and use of engineering science, the understanding materials properties and the development of new construction methods. The book argues that the use of reduced scale models have played an equally important part in the development of civil and building engineering. However, like the history of engineering design itself, this crucial contribution has not been widely reported or celebrated. The book concludes with reviews of the current use of physical models alongside computer models, for example, in boundary layer wind tunnels, room acoustics, seismic engineering, hydrology, and air flow in buildings.

Download or read book Crossing the Menai written by Reg Chambers Jones and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Menai Strait, separating the island of Anglesey from the mainland, has historically been a major obstacle to communication in north-west Wales. From the earliest recorded crossing by the forces of the Roman general Suetonius Paulinus in 61AD, to the completion of Thomas Telford's suspension bridge in 1826, this narrow stretch of water caused travellers to take their lives in their hands. Crossing the Menai chronicles the story of the various ferries that operated for hundreds of years and the two bridges that were hailed as marvels of nineteenth-century civil engineering. Profusely illustrated, in both colour and monochrome, this book examines both the people (ferry operators and passengers) and the boats that crossed from Bangor to Beaumaris and Porthaethwy, Y Felinheli (Port Dinorwic) to Moel-y-Don and Caernarfon to Tal-y-Foel, Aber Menai and Aber. Two chapters are devoted to the construction of the Menai and Britannia Bridges and a final chapter examines the pleasure steamers that made the longer journeys from Liverpool to Llandudno, Beaumaris, Bangor, Menai?Bridge and Caernarfon.

You'll find plenty of helpful advice for planning your walk, plus background information on Welsh history, geology, plants, wildlife and local points of interest. A facilities table, Welsh glossary and useful contacts can be found in the appendices. Passing through the Snowdonia and Pembrokeshire Coast National Parks, as well as numerous AONBs and sections of Heritage Coast, the Wales Coast Path takes in seaside resorts, attractive fishing villages, sandy beaches, rocky coves and striking cliff coastline. Highlights include the picturesque Llyn and Gower peninsulas, 13th-century 'Iron Ring' castles and frequent opportunities for wildlife spotting. The route can be linked with Offa's Dyke Path National Trail (covered in a separate Cicerone guide) to complete a full circuit of Wales.

Download or read book Man of Iron written by Julian Glover and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enthralling Sunday Times-bestselling biography of the shepherd boy who changed the world with his revolutionary engineering and whose genius we still benefit from today'A biography of great verve ... brings back to vivid life a man who should never have been forgotten' Andrew Marr'An evocative biography of Britain's greatest civil engineer ... Glover catches the thrill of Telford's engineering quite beautifully' GuardianThomas Telford's name is familiar; his story less so. Born in 1757 in the Scottish Borders, his father died in his infancy, plunging the family into poverty. Telford's life soared to span almost eight decades of gloriously obsessive, prodigiously productive energy. Few people have done more to shape our nation.A stonemason turned architect turned engineer, Telford invented the modern road, built churches, harbours, canals, docks, the famously vertiginous Pontcysyllte aqueduct in Wales and the dramatic Menai Bridge. His constructions were the greatest in Europe for a thousand years, and - astonishingly - almost everything he ever built remains in use today. Intimate, expansive and drawing on contemporary accounts, Man of Iron is the first full modern biography of Telford. It is a book of roads and landscapes, waterways and bridges, but above all, of how one man transformed himself into the greatest engineer Britain has ever produced.
