Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an account of the scientific and social responses made to the discovery of an invasive forest insect -- the emerald ash borer or EAB (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire, 1888) -- in North America, that was formally announced in July 2002. Since its recognition, this wood-boring beetle has become one of the most destructive and costly exotic species ever encountered. More than $300 million in federal USDA-APHIS funds (alone) have been devoted to battling this pest, which has killed some tens of millions of ash trees, chiefly within southeastern Michigan and surrounding states. EAB has now been found in 28 states and two Canadian provinces. But those numbers are almost certain to keep growing in coming years. While primarily a case study, this work nonetheless examines larger issues concerning invasive species as a whole, their inadvertent transport and worldwide spread through the rise of globalization, regulations that have been adopted to prevent their introduction, and the successes or failures of state and federal agencies to try and enforce those regulations. It offers the first general work of its kind to appear on the ash borer that is directed towards a broad audience including the public, entomologists and foresters, environmentalists and ecologists, researchers, regulators, and indeed anyone who wishes to learn more about this important and timely topic. No previous knowledge of EAB or invasion biology is assumed. This book covers all of the major aspects of scientific research and management that have occurred since EAB was recognized in 2002. It is thoroughly researched and draws from the best available data and sources, which represent (a) archival materials; (b) scholarly publications and conference proceedings; (c) interviews conducted with leading participants in the EAB program; (d) selected newspaper/magazine articles; and (e) reputable sources found on the Internet (e.g., USDA-APHIS).

Book Invasive Alien Plants

Download or read book Invasive Alien Plants written by J. R. Bhatt and published by CABI. This book was released on 2012 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive alien species are a major threat to biodiversity and ecosystems throughout the world. In India, a country with four of the world's most important 'biodiversity hotspots', the invasion of alien plants means risking a national ecological disaster with major social and economic consequences. Currently, there is insufficient information about invasive alien plants; their distribution, rate of spread and adaptability to new environments. This book reveals existing and potential invaders, evaluates the level of risk they pose to native species and suggests steps to manage spread and limit damage. Invaluable to policy-makers, this book is also required reading for researchers of invasive plants worldwide.

Book Plantation Game Trails

Download or read book Plantation Game Trails written by Archibald Rutledge and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “TO have been able, during a matter of nearly thirty years, to follow the game trails of the great plantation region of the delta of the Santee—this has been my privilege. I have seen my homeland undergo great transformations during those years: the plantations have for the most part become waste tracts; many of the old families have died out; Nature has recaptured in her inimitable way what had been, for a few years, wrested from her. The game has held its own on these desolate plantations; and that is saying much in the modern day. “In these chapters I have tried to give a faithful account of the observations I have made as a hunter and as a lover of Nature. I have tried to present the wildwoods of the South as I have known them since boyhood. And I have attempted to preserve the memory of certain characters which have appeared to me worthy of a place in the picturesque gallery of American woodsmen.” (Preface) Richly illustrated throughout.

Book Plantation Negroes of the 21st Century

Download or read book Plantation Negroes of the 21st Century written by James L. Jordan and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-07-19 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has the Black race been ostracized into a purgatory world where it is neither free nor enslaved and where the landscape looks remarkably like the Old Plantation? Dr. Claud Anderson, former Assistant Secretary of Commerce, says: “Black folks in proportional comparative terms are regressing. Blacks have been socially engineered into the lowest levels of life... and are now more hated than at any time in the last 50 years.” Dr. Anderson does not come right out and say that Blacks are still stationed near the Old Plantation, but he comes awfully close... The road that has led the Black race to this perilous moment in time leads us back to a host of villains. The White ones we all know about, the Black ones, Negroes, who prey on their fellow Black sufferers, we conveniently choose to forget about—those House Negroes, that Malcolm X warned us about? This book will name and shame... the Plantation Negroes of the 21st Century.
