Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men, the Workers In this collection of articles and addresses the editors have endeavoured to show as com prehensively as possible Mr. Lloyd's attitude toward the Labour Movement in the various concrete forms in which it presented itself to him. Some of the incidents which called forth his word have become historic, While others have been forgotten in the lapse of years; but each and every one of the questions treated is a Vital issue in the world of labour to-day. The recognition of the union, the legal restriction of the hours of labour, the issuance of injunctions in labour disputes, and the relation of the labour movement to private monopoly, are as essen tially a part of that movement to-day as they Were in 1889 or in 1894. Book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Noble Workers: A Book of Examples for Young Men There is no more important work than that of stimula ting the minds of the young to exertion, that they may be effective workers, and discharge properly the responsibili ties of their various spheres. The world needs workmen, brave and true; and every one should be ambitious to find his place and to fill it worthily. And of the means of stim ulating the minds of youth, one of the most obvious and the most powerful is the living example. A good biogra phy, presenting a striking portraiture of trials, struggles and successes, in actual life, comes like an inspiration to the young man who is just entering on the stage of the world, As he reads, compares and reflects, he feels the same spirit thrilling in his veins, and resolves bravely to enter the conflict, to battle with difficulty and opposition as others have battled, that, like them, he may win the crown of triumph and deserve the gratitude of his age and of the mankind. Book Diary of a Man in Despair

  • Author : Friedrich Reck

  • ISBN : 1590175867

Download or read book Diary of a Man in Despair written by Friedrich Reck and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2013-02-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed as one of the most important works on the Hitler period, this is an “astonishing, compelling, and unnerving” portrait of life in Nazi Germany between 1936 and 1944—from a man who nearly shot Hitler himself (The New Yorker) Friedrich Reck might seem an unlikely rebel against Nazism. Not just a conservative but a rock-ribbed reactionary, he played the part of a landed gentleman, deplored democracy, and rejected the modern world outright. To Reck, the Nazis were ruthless revolutionaries in Gothic drag, and helpless as he was to counter the spell they had cast on the German people, he felt compelled to record the corruptions of their rule. The result is less a diary than a sequence of stark and astonishing snapshots of life in Germany between 1936 and 1944. We see the Nazis at the peak of power, and the murderous panic with which they respond to approaching defeat; their travesty of traditional folkways in the name of the Volk; and the author’s own missed opportunity to shoot Hitler. This riveting book is not only, as Hannah Arendt proclaimed it, “one of the most important documents of the Hitler period,” but a moving testament of a decent man struggling to do the right thing in a depraved world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Here Comes Labor American Labor is on the March. Millions of men and women, working people, are fighting for a chance to live better lives. Whenever they win, life is better for all of us together. This book is about Labor and what it is doing. But the word "labor" is sometimes confusing. Suppose we put it this way: If you spell labor with a small "l" you mean work. If you spell Labor with a capital "L" you mean people. So this book is really about human beings engaged in a dramatic struggle. But Labor does not include everybody, or even everybody who works.
